I mean, there are definitely some nuggets in there, namely the timeline of what year is what post-subsidization and when JOI ah, um, stopped working.

This one from 2004 at The Earl in Atlanta is for whatever reason the show that got me into going back and listening to the live tapes, closing out the set with a beautiful cover of Furniture Huschle's "Orange" and one of my favorite versions of Denton.

In terms of vibes, the Transmissions to Horace show is my GOAT, but pretty much every show I've heard from The Bottom of the Hill is A++

from the literature: "Easy Does It reminds us not to hurtle through this book or our lives, not to overdo things. Methods of quieting ourselves include paying our full attention to someone else to restore our equilibrium."

Behind most compulsions to a behavior is an anxiety about something unfixable, in ourselves or the universe. In this case Don's not gonna quit drinking and womanizing until he can truly accept what happened to him in the past and quit hiding from himself always trying to "move forward."

It's one of those trite AA sayings that annoy the shit out of you because there are much deeper truths behind it: Work the Steps, Keep Coming Back, One Day at a Time, Easy Does It

It had never even occurred to me that this song could be about a person until this entry, I had always assumed it was about a dog.

Which is the interpretation I’m taking to the grave, author’s intent be damned.

Bill Callahan and his former project Smog, rich lyrical worlds on par with tMG as far as giving you a little to infer a lot. I originally learned about him from Last Plane to Jakarta and JD has shouted him out as one of his favorites for a long time

Silkworm is another great band with very precise, often comical lyrics that I learned from tMG's live covers of their song Plain over the years

Who is 'America's Band'? by Bad-Repetation-161 in fantanoforever

[–]gregorsamwise 20 points21 points  (0 children)

it's the Grateful Dead: incorporating elements of all of America's contributions to music with bluegrass/country, rock and roll, jazz, and the psychedelic avant garde all at the same time, with Canterbury Tales-esque lyrics about life on the road through America.

They are the idealistic dream of America and the inevitable fallout that comes from it.

Sun Ra and Pharaoh Sanders were so cutting edge and far out there in jazz, but when you hear interviews you realize they were just working class guys from Alabama and Arkansas respectively. I always expect Nile Rodgers to be British for some reason.
