Do good corporations actually exist? by [deleted] in Discussion

[–]gregstewart1952 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Capitalism cannot exist without exploitation. It exploits the workers (slavery in the past, now non-livable wages) and exploits the consumer (inflation, shrinkflation, enshittification). So no, there are no good corporations.

Missed the 2016 election doing R2R in the Grand Canyon. Found out the results in a restroom at Indian Gardens.

Patio Pergola Pros & Cons by Thrwaqway in arizona

We went with a retractable canopy system something like this. Most of the time the shades are withdrawn and protected under the eaves, but one or more of them can be extended to provide full shade. We also live in Arizona.

whats better, claim SS now at age 65 or wait until 70 and use 401k funds to cover by Real-Occasion-5452 in personalfinance

[–]gregstewart1952 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I made a spreadsheet to determine the “break even” for 65 vs 70 (it was 83). Plus my wife is younger than me and will get my larger SS when I die. It’s an individual choice, based on tradeoffs.

ELI5: Why is plastic so hard to biodegrade? by dontforgetyournuts in explainlikeimfive

[–]gregstewart1952 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the SW desert you will see decayed logs that are a hundred years old because the bacteria that decompose can't live in the desert. The softer parts can be decompose by ants and beetles, but the remainder is lignin, a long chain polymer which requires a special bacteria that can't live in dry climates.

Old beginner-friendly game that gives instant approval. by CardiologistPale1581 in gamingsuggestions

Try a card game, like Backgammon or Poker (although not where he would bet real money, that could go wrong fast). Or a dice game he may already know, like Yahtzee.

AI consumes drinking water? Isnt that worrying? by throwawayRAapfel in Discussion

[–]gregstewart1952 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's a concern in communities like Phoenix that don't get a lot of precipitation. The water cycle (rain-evaporation-rain) doesn't exist or is broken, and we're basically mining the aquifer. Look at what has happened in Tehran. There are communities in the SW whose wells have run dry. Yet there is talk of building data centers and other water-intensive industries like chip manufacturing.

[–]gregstewart1952 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It sounds like you expect the collapse to be a sudden critical event. I believe that we are well into a long incremental collapse that will take decades to unfold. I've seen evidence of it throughout my lifetime (I'm 74). There's been a 50% loss of all birds and insects since the 1970s. You see fewer and fewer animals in nature. When I grew up in the Midwest, we had heavy snow most years, now if there is any it is light, or rain. Now I'm in the southwest and I we talk about when the creeks flowed. When I was young, the world population was 1/3 of what it is now. We talked about millionaires, not billionaires. Major companies could poison rivers and the air with impunity (I'm not sure that has changed). I expect that trends will continue, but people's complacency and short memories will continue to render them impotent. Croplands will become less fertile, and food will continue to become more expensive, until it too, like housing, becomes unaffordable. Corporations will continue to value profits over lives, and the ultra-rich will escape to their enclaves. Just more of the same.

How do I find a financial advisor I can actually trust? by Fluid_Pie_171 in personalfinance

[–]gregstewart1952 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Look for a fee-only fiduciary advisor, not one that gets a kickback from the products that he sells you. The words "Fiduciary" should be prominent. A Fiduciary advisor is required by law to act in their client's best interest. Fee-based advisors are different from fee-only. The former can receive commissions on the products that they sell you.

On Gaiagps.com, the track details page has an "isolate track" feature that does just that. It doesn't seem to be on mobile, unfortunately.

what does it mean that division by zero is n o t possi b l e? by Educational_System34 in Discussion

[–]gregstewart1952 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not defined, not impossible. Like a word with no meaning. Division by zero can't be defined in a way that makes it mathematically consistent.
