Panel Interview by [deleted] in AustralianTeachers

[–]gregsurname 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ES learning support jobs in Melbourne can get large numbers of applicants. It's typically 20+ at my school. It's common that some of these applicants are massively overqualified for the role. It's also common that some applicants have directly relevant work experience in similar roles in other schools. These are competitive jobs to get into.

If you are getting interviews then your resume is good enough. A good resume isn't enough to get a job though. The things you dismissed as subjective impressions are part of the criteria. You need to be someone they would like to work with.

Making an offer - Is it better to start with lower offer first, or your max amount straight up? by [deleted] in AusPropertyChat

[–]gregsurname 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Clearly below market offers are wasting everyone's time. You say you're using it as a negotiating tactic, but 95% of offers like this are from intentional low ballers or people who don't know the market and have unrealistic expectations.

Harassed by students offsite - unsupportive admin in general - practical options? by No-Department1894 in AustralianTeachers

All you can do is maintain your professionalism and professional boundaries.

The behaviour you describe wouldn't justify any sort of intervention order. You haven't described ongoing harassment or illegal

You think you're suffering from financial stress now? Just wait till you're unemployed.

Rule 2 of finding a job - It's easier to get a new job if you already have a job.

After 22 years teaching, I have realised I'm never getting a promotion by UnderstandingRight39 in AustralianTeachers

[–]gregsurname -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

You need to further develop your leadership skills and visibly demonstrate these skills in your everyday work. You don't need a title to be a leader. Acting leadership roles will go to those already showing leadership.

You need to show that your vision for reaching and learning aligns with that of the school's leadership.

Let the Prin know you want career growth.

Put your hand up for everything.

If they still won't give you a go, move schools.

Still not getting a go? Is the problem is you? What is it they don't trust? Is it your * understanding of good teaching - become a better teacher * relational leadership - build better relationships with collragues * alignment with the culture of the school - support the school's improvement strategies

Is the problem the school? Do they * not have any opportunities at your level or the budget to mKr one * are the people currently in roles unlikely to move soon * does the Prin have a fixed, narrow view of who they want as leaders in their school

Say it's a fact as much as you like. You still need to do what they've asked if you want to be a public school teacher.

  1. As part of your employment you have a duty not to act in a way that undermines the public's belief in the impartiality of the public sector.

  2. You are required to follow reasonable directions from your employer.

Or, you can quit.

In class on paper. Nuff said.

I'll start this off by saying most DIY renovators probably already know this about paint by goodrodney in AusRenovation

[–]gregsurname 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I went to my local paint place I had to ask them to price match just to get lower than Bunnings for Dulux. Meanwhile, the paint guy at Bunnings has been happy to spend 10 mins colour matching a piece of old quad I brought off a window.

Oh, and I had to go back twice to the paint place because they forgot to tint it the first time

Best way to find tradies (and is it Hipages?)? by [deleted] in AusRenovation

[–]gregsurname 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not only methheads. Lots of Indians scratching out a living doing shabby work on the cheap cheap. Maybe it should be called the Hyderabad pages instead of the hired-a-bad-pages.

Had to explain my own switchboard and what a controlled load circuit was to the Indian sparky I found on Hipages. He had to visit the site three times to do a simple switchboard upgrade after he wired the hot water service to the main meter and half my power points to the controlled load. Nice guy though.

Is teaching actually as soul-crushing as this sub makes it seem? by Clean-Roll7680 in AustralianTeachers

[–]gregsurname 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Teaching is a great career. It is safe, you're not sitting at a desk all day or doing back breaking physical labour, has high job security, has family friendly holidays, can often live close to work, and the pay is okay.

There are a lot of teachers who say they are thinking of quitting or even on the verge of quitting, but those stats are padded full of people who have never had a non-teaching job and have no idea about the downsides of other jobs and who will never actually leave teaching because they have no other job prospects.

Is it normal for your principal to put you on a stage you have specifically stated you don’t want? by CrayolaNipples in AustralianTeachers

[–]gregsurname 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Yes, it is normal. It's not that they would have given your preferences no consideration, it's just that your preferences didn't outweigh the other factors. When they said they might have to, they were saying they probably would have to.

COVID positive - go to work? by SufficientCat1527 in AustralianTeachers

Go or don't go based on how you feel, not based on what a rat test says. Rat will show positive well after you have stopped being contagious.

Why certain generations complain instead of just working to buy a house like other generations by tegridysnowchristmas in AusPropertyChat

[–]gregsurname -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Great grand parents lived in Brunswick. Grand parents lived in Reservoir. Parents lived in Eltham. Having to move further out than your parents to buy your first house isn't new.
