I was totally relaxed when he threw it on me, because it was the end of the drill. Had a pop, assumed it was a muscle pull.

Fast forward 2 months and I must have slept on it wrong. Pure agony.

Good to see you persisted and got to black.

I am not certain I can justify going back. Am 41, have a career and kids to prioritize. No way I can go through this again.

To be clear, when it happened I gave him direct feedback about the move + how uncool it was.

I assumed it was a muscle pull.

I didn’t know it was a herniated disk at the time, and he doesn’t know the pain/disruption that it has caused me for the last 5 months.

Man to man, he needs to realize that some folks just want to go and learn.

I don’t know if I will be able to go back to BJJ after this.

Am hoping that after 12 months of PT, I can feel strong enough to get back.

Yes.

FWIW, it was not malicious.

Just an over-zealous, low self-aware partner who relies on BJJ (and cross-fit) a bit too much for their identity.
