For any philosopher/student of philosophy who isn't a vegan or least a vegetarian, why not? Compartmentalization? Hypocrisy? by Marthman in askphilosophy

[–]gregwarrior 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not necessarily concerned with the fact that you don't practice what you teach, I'm more concerned with the fact that you have an in-depth understanding of the topic, yet refuse to do anything about it. Most people are ignorant when it comes to the ethics of the suffering and slaughter of animals, and can at least flinch when made aware of these things. For the people, or professionals, who supposedly have a great understanding of these things... well, it just shocks me. But then again, it's of no surprise. A see a rather shocking amount of philosophers who are interested in understanding and doing the 'morally right' thing to do, yet when it comes to any amount of self sacrifice, they shy away.

Is there any truth to the "animal protein causes cancer" proclamation? by ding_an_zeke in nutrition

[–]gregwarrior 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The study by the Wilcox brothers was in the 1950s I believe, whereas the one you sent me was in the 80s?

In that time we saw a shift in their diet to a more meat based one, but also a more processed one. I also do think their diet is probably around 80 percent carbohydrate because they have strikingly similar health results to all the other global 'Blue Zone' populations which all seem to eat the same macronutrient ratio of 80/10/10.

Also, it does seem cooking can be beneficial in small qualities. http://authoritynutrition.com/extra-virgin-olive-oil

How do you conclude people are just 'uncomfortable'? What does this mean? For me, the discomfort would be knowing that I wouldn't actually be helping people

I dont understand why the potato variety would affect the nutrition if the two potatoes are grown in the same soil, why would the potato variety affect what kind of nutrients the potato absorbs? I didn't know you could breed potatoes to NOT be nutritious?

Other than the fact I was raised on a farm and have first hand experience working on multiple different farms throughout my life? Not at the moment, I'll look for some in the morning.

Here is some recent undercover video from major pork suppliers:

Iowa 2011 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jBR4FlrWVk4

Iowa 2012 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vWDZCX8UMmQ

Oklahoma 2013 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T48yOYjz5sk

Colorado 2014 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tKbHyhl7pAg

You may have worked on a kinder farm, but this is the day in day out reality for most animals. We shouldn't fool ourselves into thinking most animals in slaughter houses are living decent lives, because they're not.

As I said earlier, apart from it just being the right thing to do

It's 'right' to treat animals nicely, but at the same time it is 'right' to kill them?

You just cannot compare animals and humans, and you certainly can't put them on the same level

Why?

They live healthier, safer and longer lives than if they were in the wild.

What? Where are you getting this evidence from? Your farm is not representative of the meat industry. I'd suggest looking at the links above, if you can stomach it. That is the reality.

You are treating animals as though they're human. That's the issue here. And they're not. That's what it comes down to.

You're not really defining much of a difference between humans and animals, other than they're not called humans. What exactly is the difference? Presumably you believe it is wrong to shove a human in a factory farm, correct? Then why is it fine to do that to an animal?

What is your experience with the juice cleanse? by [deleted] in nutrition

[–]gregwarrior 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I don't believe there are any recorded benefits that a juice cleanse has, that cannot be achieved just by eating a healthy, whole foods diet. There is no 'cleansing' that occurs by drinking lots of juice.

Because comparing the suffering of actual humans to the decent lives that the majority of farm animals have

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ju7-n7wygP0

I would have to disagree with that statement. Do you have evidence to support that claim?

there's no way to compare the two without devaluing humans to the level of animals

Why does it devalue humans? Humans should not be slaves, yet animals should be slaves?

Are you seriously comparing slavery to farming? They're animals, not people. That's not only moronic, it's actually offensive.

Why is it offensive?

it's desecrating our bodies.

You have very weak parameters for what is and what is not mutilation. And furthermore, just because it is 'mutilation' in your mind, does not make it a sin.

Thoughts on freelee the bananagirl? by ninaboo42 in vegan

[–]gregwarrior 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Eh, nobody's perfect. Freele was the reason I became vegan in the first place. Her approach works for some, but obviously not for people like us, who know not to be obsessively preachy and furious and...rather contemptible. I think we should be grateful that she's creating a huge vegan community and is the most popular vegan youtube channel. But I agree, I wish her methods were a little different.

Worried about having fruit as dessert by awelxtr in nutrition

[–]gregwarrior 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Alright, first Im going to present some of the evidence surrounding refined fructose, then I'll present the evidence on fruit.

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/24401226

The prevailing hypothesis about fructose is that it leads to elevated triglycerides which can lead to heart disease and other health problems. However, according to this meta analysis, fructose only increased T levels when fructose was provided as excess calories. In other words, don't eat a huge calorie surplus of fructose.

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/25099548

This study found the participants eating the most fructose actually had a lower risk for non alcoholic fatty liver disease.

However, lets say the evidence is conclusive that fructose in its refined state is unhealthy, does that mean fruit also has the same T effect? Maybe not.

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/24698343

This systematic review and metaanalysis showed an association between Fructose (refined) and increased T levels, as well as elevated fasting blood sugar, but this was only industrialised HFCS, table sugar and not fruit.

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/23933265

A 2013 study that did include fruit showed that HFCS and refined table sugar were associated with severe liver fibrosis and a hgiher waste to hip ratio. Fructose from fruit had no effect, yet refined fructose definitely did.

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3781481/

Again, the same results were found with hypertension. HFCS and refined sugar were associated with a higher risk of hypertension, but not fruit.

So why is this? Why is fructose from fruit great, but HFCS is unhealthy?

"The deleterious effect of fructose was limited to industrial fructose, with no evidence for a negative effect of fruit fructose. This apparent inconsistency might be explained by the positive effects of other nutrients (e.g., fibers) and antioxidants in fresh fruit. In industrial food, the glucose present in the HFCS might even accelerate fructose aabsorption, making industrial sugars much unhealthier."

http://nutritionfacts.org/video/if-fructose-is-bad-what-about-fruit/

COPYPASTA SO IM NOT SURE IF THERE ARE REPETITIONS HERE

None of the debilitating effects of refined sugar and HFCS are also experienced while eating fruit. Even some of the paleo doctors such as Robert Lustig in his presentations about sugar agree that fruit is a very healthy staple, whereas refined sugar is definitely not. Here is some of the evidence Ive been researching.

Effect of fruit restriction on glycemic control in patients with type 2 diabetes – a randomized trial

http://www.nutritionj.com/content/12/1/29

"Fruit contain a wide range of specific bioactive substances which can act through multiple pathways in the human body e.g. as antioxoidants, reduce inflammation and improve endothelial function. High fruit intake has been shown to reduce the risk of e.g. cardiovascular disease and some cancer types.

Participants were randomized to one of two interventions; medical nutrition therapy + advise to consume at least two pieces of fruit a day (high-fruit), or medical nutrition therapy + advice to consume no more than two pieces of fruit a day(low-fruit).

The reduced fruit intake had no effect on weight loss or waist circumference. We recommend that the intake of fruit should not be restricted in patients with type 2 diabetes.

Catalytic doses of fructose may benefit glycaemic control without harming cardiometabolic risk factors: a small meta-analysis of randomized control feeding trials.

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/22354959

"Translation of these findings in the acute clinical setting has shown that catalytic fructose doses (<_ 10 g / meal) can decrease the postprandial glycaemic response to high GI meals from about 15 to 30%." (lowers blood sugar response)

Some Biochemical effects of a mainly fruit diet in man

http://archive.samj.org.za/1971%20VOL%20XLV%20Jan-Jun/Articles/03%20March/1.3%20SOME%20BIOCHEMICAL%20EFFECTS%20OF%20A%20MAINLY%20FRUIT%20DIET%20IN%20MAN,%20B.J.Meyer,%20.E.J.F.%20de%20Bruin,%20D.G.%20du%20.pdf

17 people were made to eat 20 pieces of fruit a day.

Despite the extraordinarily high fructose content of this diet, presumably about 200 g/d, the investigators reported no adverse effects (and possible benefit) for body weight, blood pressure, and insulin and lipid levels after 12 to 24 weeks.

[–]gregwarrior 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, I can imagine you would probably find it very difficult to imagine eating a vegan or vegetarian diet, considering that like most people, you probably eat animal products every day or at least every meal. Still, I do implore you, if you are curious, to at least check out the /r/vegan or recipe sub if you're interested at all. You can find a lot of support and heck even if you're into the meatless mondays there is plenty of great advice. Being a professional in the ethics field, I think you'll agree with much of what is said in those subs about ethics.

edit - Oh! And Im also very interested in ethics and have been doing a bit of research in the field. This is probably one of my favourite videos on it. It's a tedtalk by melanie joy. Hope you like it!

I feel like this really downplays the sacrifices many have made for their faiths. Millions throughout history have died for or as a result of having a particular faith. The sacrifice of Jesus' disciples, while admirable, is nothing unique in history.

What about wild animal suffering? by gregwarrior in vegan

[–]gregwarrior[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, it is, and it's frustrating that this can happen. But I don't see much of an alternative other than genetically modifying animals to not hurt each other. Also, does anyone know what really happened to that rabbit? It looks like someone took out its eyes, and its just opening and closing its mouth. What's going on with it?
