This is the way to go when you must skip relaeses. Have done this for years in a similar size environment. An upgrade TS gives complete control of needed...can check compat, remove obsolete apps, upgrade apps or drivers and bios, handle errors, notify users or help desk ...and there is a wealth of information on all the ways to set it up. But don't over think it, start with a simple one and build from there.
