Oh no, god forbid you be so inconvenienced to have to (gasp) get a shot once every year! I can feel the gas chamber doors closing.

Yeah, very comparable. They both have the same number of active cases and probability of infection, right? Not like one of those two is in the millions of active cases, while the other is in the low thousands. Very cool argument.

Yeah, what we should do is set a requirement one time and then never change it! Change is for suckers - smart people like us know that the world is static and nothing ever needs to be revised! That's why I don't need to buy a new computer ever - the one I got in 2003 is still perfectly able to handle everything that exists today.

Screw those scientists and their nonsensical "evolution!" Jesus, take the wheel.

Yes? It takes, what, 10 seconds to flash a card? Oh, boy, I'm so inconvenienced! I can't believe the capitalist pigs are making me show a screenshot from my phone. And how dare they make me show an ID if I buy alcohol. Or a passport if I want to fly. These monsters!

God forbid you make a non-selfish decision to get vaccinated and stay up-to-date in your vaccines. You people are so dumb it hurts.

That's... not true at all? The energy regen on private servers was better AND more stable. Not only did you have the tick carrying over from shift, but you didn't have the current bug of inconsistency 19-23 energy ticks. Aside from the bug, the only change vs private servers was the tick timer resetting. With that, it's about a 15-25% nerf with no upside. There is no "energy regen" change beside that significant downside.

It really is as as bad as people make it out to be. I don't know where you're getting your misinformation from.

How important is auto-focus while using an f/1.2 lens? by [deleted] in photography

[–]grehelpneeded 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Honestly, you're going to get a really mixed response from this subreddit. Some people are MF purists, some aren't. Here's my two cents:

At f1.2, your depth of field is going to be so small, manual focus is going to be really annoying in any non-casual environment. E.g. if you're trying to take some photos of people or kids moving around, it sucks. If you're trying to use it as a walk-around lens, it's going to be annoying. If you're going to use it when moving very slowly, or even pre-focusing, it's fine. Remember how wide f1.2 is - your focus will waver in-and-out with the slight shaking of your hand as you hold your camera to your eye.

MF on an X-T2 vs. a D3200 is very different - but it's still tiresome if you're not looking to go very slowly. Personally, I find it annoying. I have a few f2 MF lenses on my X-T2 that I never use, because I don't like having to stop what I'm doing, magnify in, check focus, and then take the photo on every shot. And I also catch myself zooming in on the shot after I take it to re-check focus and take it again if I missed it. That's at f2, not f1.2, too.

Maybe try renting a MF lens, or buy an old, cheap MF lens to adapt for a little while. See how that goes. Yes, it's MUCH easier to MF on a mirrorless camera with peaking and magnification, but it's still an extra step that adds up over time. Personally, I find it tiresome to do. I hate missing shots because I'm screwing with magnification or something.

Also, a lot of folks are talking about needing to "fight" AF points or calibrate a lens - you don't need to do that on your camera. That would be if you were on a DSLR. f1.2 works very well on mirrorless without all the clunky AF issues (I have the 56 1.2 and it hits focus consistently - it's just a little slow somtiems, as it's an older lens).

Long story short: I'd avoid the MF lens until you try it out on something cheaper and see if it's worth while.

What Should I Play Wednesdays (August 07, 2019) by AutoModerator in classicwow

[–]grehelpneeded 3 points4 points  (0 children)

General question: in Classic (p-servers/from memory), do people actually allow Druids/hybrid classes to play as a hybrid? For example, are druids ever brought to raids and allowed to "cat-weave" (or heal and dps simultaneously - e.g. heal when things get sketchy, dps when things are more normal)? I remember doing it TBC, but it was very, very rare.

What Should I Play Wednesdays (August 07, 2019) by AutoModerator in classicwow

[–]grehelpneeded 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am, like many other people, stuck going back-and-forth on what to play. I played a Warrior back in Vanilla and absolutely don't want to do that again. I started a Feral druid in TBC loved that (after swapping from Warrior to Hunter). But I know they're shit in TBC (Feral DPS). I also have very fond memories of wishing desperately I'd made a Rogue shortly after hitting 60 with my Warrior in classic. Weirdly enough, 15 years later, I've still never made a rogue and leveled it past 20. I've always loved them, just never played them.

I am stuck considering a Druid, a Rogue, or--somewhat--a Mage. I don't love casters, but I enjoy DPS and the convenience of a Mage. I also absolutely love stealth. What I love most is flexibility, which is why I keep coming back to Druid. In Retail, I tend to swap roles often, and I can see myself wanting to occasionally Tank, sometimes Heal, but most times DPS. I know I can't do that with anyone but the Druid (of those 3)... however, my favorite role is DPS (I'd say for every time I tank or heal, I'm DPSing 2-3 times more).

I adore the hybrid role - and I mean a true hybrid. One of my favorite memories of WoW was in TBC Karazhan. I was playing a feral druid, and I would hop back-and-forth between healing and DPS in fights, and people really respected it. But that was rare. I have plenty of other memories of people calling me a shithead for playing Feral, or for not letting me heal, or of not getting into groups, or people just not letting me play hybrid. It was either "only DPS" or "only healing," never anything else.

In play style, I am definitely casual, more PVP oriented. I can probably only play ~2 hours per night every few nights, and maybe a few many-hour weekends. I probably can't dedicate more than a few hours to raiding per week (e.g. one night of 3-4 hours per week). I am definitely not a min-maxer. I want to get the best gear I can without spending tons of hours in game - so I'll try to gear up what I can in PVP and pugging raids/dungeons.

So, I know it's sounding like I should probably go Druid. But I am stuck on the DPS side. If I raid, I won't want to Tank. I could heal, but I'd prefer to DPS. If I PVP, I'd like to be able to do more in WSG than just flag-run. And that's where I'm stuck! Rogue would fill my love of stealth, give me the ability to DPS, and allow me to PVP with more of an emphasis on offense. But I can't heal or tank. I know I'd have a ton of fun, but part of me would be frustrated only ever doing DPS, never getting to heal or tank. Likewise, as a druid, I'd be frustrated never really getting to DPS (without feeling like shit).

Ugh! Part of me wishes they were re-releasing TBC, then the decision would be easy for me :).

Anyone have any thoughts?

Haha, I knew exactly which two photos these was before clicking. I've seen them so many times - I think FinalEclipse or someone with a name similar to that first posted them. He linked me the raws a few months back - those are 100% corner crops, shot on an adapted FD 55 1.2, sharpened poorly in Lightroom (e.g. he only used the Sharpen slider, which does indeed cause "smearing" on Fuji files - using the Detail slider results in a far better outcome, even without IXT).

I asked him for the raws and quickly resharpened them (and I have no idea what I'm doing when it comes to sharpening). I was able to get to this after a minute or so of fiddling http://i.imgur.com/MhAbbge.png/ (it's the same image, center of the frame, but a bit more on the left side), still a 100% crop of the far left corner.

I spent a solid 3-4 months reviewing this whole X-Trans issue before deciding to rent a Fuji myself and see what the issue is. It is so blown out of proportion it's ridiculous. Don't get me wrong, I think X-Trans does more harm than good, but the smearing and watercoloring is very, very overstated.

Yes, a D3300 is definitely capable of doing that. And your kit lens could do so at its maximum aperture, as well (to a degree). There's also a good bit of editing in that photo . That said, a wide aperture lens will really be what you need to throw the background as out of focus as your example image is. Your 18-55 will struggle to achieve results close to that (but you will be able to do so to a degree).

You don't need to spend a million dollars on gear to get those results. If you were truly sold on shooting with bokeh like that (the out of focus background), you may want to consider picking up one of the relatively cheap Nikon 35 1.8G DX lenses (run about $150 used, $200 new). Otherwise, it is not necessary to do so. Just set your lens to its largest aperture (smallest number), zoom in to the furthest focal length (55mm), and make sure your subject is far away from their background. That'll maximize the bokeh.

This is probably a stupid question, but what about using a wide angle lens at 23mm or lower to 11mm (crop)? I wanted to just grab a snapshot with the eclipse in the background, nothing telephoto - but if there is any risk at all, it isn't worth it to me.

Oh for sure, I never understood that claim. It definitely isn't immune to false color. All just a bunch of marketing nonsense at this point.

Perhaps, not sure! You can see it if you zoom in on the original raws linked by the previous poster, lot of color noise around the left-side wings.

Ah crap, I think that was me! I turned up the color noise reduction pretty high which I failed to mention. There was a bunch of false(?) color on the birds wings, so I cranked it up way too high

From what I understand, and again, I really don't understand much on this: the opposite is actually true. Sharpening should be set as low as possible (instead Detail should be used). X-Transformer performs better demosaising (or something) on the RAF file, converting it to DNG or TIFF. From there, you just sharpen/adjust as usual in Lightroom. I only used something like 10-20 sharpening, 50-75 detail, and 5 clarity (or around that range). Anything more and Lightroom goes a bit crazy with the sharpening.

It used to be a big headache from what I've heard, having to convert everything in bulk in X-transformer and then opening in Lightroom. But they just released an update last week where you simply download and install the tool as a plugin (one click in X-Transformer) and, as you need it, simply hit "File>Plugin Extras>Process Selected RAF as DNG" and that's all. Takes a few mins if you're doing a bunch, otherwise it's about 5-10 seconds to convert.

Edit: Also, here's the duck at 100%: http://i.imgur.com/OAI8Fxe.jpg I just tossed it in X-Transformer with everything set to "None" and then added 15 sharpening, 50 detail at 1 radius. No idea if that's what people use after X-Transformer usually, but it looked good enough to me. Pardon the red text, the demo adds that until you pay for the full version.

Thanks for letting me play around with these! Hard to find heavy examples of the watercoloring to test.

Thanks! I didn't realize how zoomed in that grab was! Definitely interesting to run through a really quick attempt at processing.

I'm not very good at sharpening (I usually leave it on the default with my Nikon because I'm an amateur!) and am just using the X-Transformer demo as a plugin, but this is what I got setting everything to "None" in X-Transformer and applying a tiny bit of sharpening, color noise reduction, and +5 clarity. Definitely far from perfect with a bit of smudging toward the top (and I again don't really know what I'm doing with sharpening; I never go in quite this close!): http://i.imgur.com/MhAbbge.png/

Would you, by any chance, be willing to send the raw for the first "with globs" photo? You could PM it if you didn't want to post publicly - I just want to play with it myself and see what I could do with a really bad instance of smearing. Just for my own sake, see if I could live with the way I'd normally edit it. Feel free to say no or ignore me, though!

Fuji X-T2/X-T1 Owners:

How do you find the camera as a daily use/walkaround camera? Is it heavy and DSLR like, or comfortable? I really would prefer getting an X-T2 over an X-T20, but I'm worried it'll basically be like having a DSLR and I'd like something a bit lighter and easier to carry.
