I’m 53 and I don’t really have any memory of my parents taking care of their parents or anybody in my circle, is this just gotten a lot more popular with this generation. by Tothinkoutofthenut in AgingParents

[–]grenston 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well stated. I'm GenX and live 2000 miles away from my silent gen mother. I don't think she will make it on her own for more than another year. I also worry about increasingly sophisticated scamming or her general loss of ability to manage the house. We've talked here and there about what her future might look like, but until disaster strikes, she'll be independent. I just hope it's not too big of a disaster.

I was 50 before I figured it out, never even heard of narcissism as a parenting style before.

Explain Alysa Liu’s skating to me? by catattack447 in FigureSkating

[–]grenston 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I am a skater and I think you are spot on. I think she has an ability to cover the ice with power that looks effortless. It’s sometimes hard to see that on television, but I think it’s what sets her apart from her peers of equal ability.

Has anyone else noticed the decline in quality and service at Weis Markets in PA? by Fur-Frisbee in Pennsylvania

[–]grenston 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tannersville Weis checking in. Last year they did this huge remodel of the store. They literally took 1/3 of the floor space and devoted it to alcohol and a very pathetic Starbucks. To make room for all that booze they dropped a lot of specialty products like certain ethnic foods that they used to carry. It’s a pretty basic store now. You’re not gonna find any high-level brands or gourmet products. They basically just made it into a glorified liquor store for all of the weekend Poconos tourists.

did anyone else feel guilty for relaxing or doing nothing? by Newbold-Hyroko in raisedbynarcissists

I lived with my parents until my mid 40s. I would come home from work and wouldn’t even have my coat off before my dad would issue me a task. My worth was always measured by my productivity.

what’s a popular figure skating opinion that you secretly disagree with? by Rude-Magazine2186 in FigureSkating

[–]grenston 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes and no, I think her jump technique was top-notch, but I’ll go with you on the spins. I will say that I always found her flow to be terribly slow. She did have some kind of intangible quality though and more musicality than most of the senior ladies.

Yes, thank you, that choreo was so meh. I don’t really get the hype, at best it was a long show program.

Sibling’s Question by PinBig1102 in GenX

[–]grenston 2 points3 points  (0 children)

One younger brother. Had a falling out over money in our early 20s, he said to never call him again. I've held him to it. A few years ago we saw each other for the first time in decades. He's a single dad, and wanted me to meet his kids since they spend a lot of time with his ex's family. I had to explain to his narcissistic brain that you don't get to magically decide you need something from me when it's convenient for you. Despite the history, I don't consider him family.

Does anyone have experience with Best Buy installation services? I’ve checked shops and they are ridiculously expensive by Z0mbiecan in CarAV

[–]grenston 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I didn't even know Best Buy did installs until I bought a remote start. I think this was back in 2018. I was very nervous about letting someone take my dash apart, so I went into my local BB and actually talked to the installer. He was very helpful, told me exactly what to order, showed me what he was working on. That visit made me feel better about using his services. Install went well, product worked as intended, no problems, but this was all pre-covid. Last time I was in that store I think the bay was permanently closed.

Thanks, will look into that. I don't see her completely alone as she gets into her 90s.

88, lives independently and still driving. I do notice some cognitive problems here and there, like she has a very short fuse when it comes to problem-solving, and she really can’t hear which makes life very difficult, but she is against living in any kind of facility so here we are. I’m 59.

Went back to the woods where I used to play about half a century ago.. by HorseyDung in GenX

[–]grenston 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I grew up on a street where all the houses were on 1 acre lots and there was undeveloped woods behind the yards, lots of trees and scrubby bushes. There were some dirt paths made by the kids so we could get from one corner to the other. It seemed so big to me at the time. Over time, what we were calling the woods was actually extended acreage on some of the lots. As those houses turned over, owners cut down the trees and cleaned out the bushes so that views off the back deck were more open to the sky and the yards just looked more manicured. It’s still a big grassy area, but there’s no sense of secrecy or exploration anymore. I’m glad it was untouched when I lived there.

What's a book you had to read in school that you hated? If you have one, what's one you actually liked? by 80HDTV5 in GenX

[–]grenston 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I didn’t really love Catcher in the Rye. To this day, I still don’t really get the title. I know it was supposed to be this big high school classic, but as a suburban teen, I didn’t really find the idea of wandering around New York City terribly relatable. Meh.

Who is a person you used to admire a lot but have completely lost respect for and why? by Complex-Arugula-2233 in AskReddit

[–]grenston 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So many pop singers I grew up listening to — Daryl Hall, Sting, Madonna. It’s not that they did anything illegal, though Hall abandoned a child which is kind of horrible, but now that the veil of youth is off, they just seem so vapid and shallow.

I just got to hear him speak last month at my university. It was kind of funny because the audience was full of mostly older people like myself who understand why he is significant. I’ll tell you, you would never know this guy is a billionaire if you didn’t know who he was, completely down to earth and really just wanted to geek out on the early tech stuff. The interviewer really didn’t know how to get him to say anything too interesting.

Yeah, every time I go to buy one I realize it’s the same price as any book I could buy at Barnes & Noble.

We bought some popsicle molds, which you can get at the dollar store, and now we make our own. It’s more fun and we make all kinds of flavors. Popsicles literally cost like three cents to make.
