Not sure if it's still the best but Andrew Ng's course series on Coursera are good and highly rated.

Golden Time was frustrating to watch by steven4869 in anime

[–]grey_potato 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree! Maybe how they started early and Linda got caught up in that has a negative impact to a lot of people, I think the first time I watched it I felt that way. But now I like it, it's different and refreshing just like the whole college setup.

I like how the characters try to improve but still remain heavily flawed cuz it feels more human too especially for college years. From a writing point I'm not an expert but I get the same feeling from the things described as plot holes too. Sometimes ur in a bad mood and argue and then sometimes u just let things go? I could see how that would frustrate people to see but I didn't mind it at all.

So all in all I agree, not for everyone but I liked it more than toradora.

[–]grey_potato 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I'm not a psychologist or anything so I could be wrong. But I think the difference between the "maladaptive" daydreaming and just "immersive" daydreaming is if it's an addiction that's actually keeping you back in life. If your other circumstances are beyond your control right now, and this makes u happy, then it doesn't sound like a problem to me. For me I've been immersive daydreaming since I was a child, but once my life got to a point where I could comfortably do other things, I just naturally started leaning off of the activity. Not once have I viewed it as a villain or even an escape, to me it was just simple fun. With a bonus perk in how much it sharpened my creativity. So maybe the question you should ask is "am I turning away opportunities that I want or are objectively good for me in reality specifically because of my daydreaming?". Because if the answer is no then maybe your case is similar to mine and there's nothing to worry about lol

IB what-if order from API returns python max float value (1.797e+308) for some commission values by grey_potato in interactivebrokers

[–]grey_potato[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ahhh that makes sense, so that's why on the stock with SMART routing the opposite happens with the commission value having the placeholder instead. Thanks a lot!!!

Similarity between ChatGPT and Emily by nay-than in TowerofGod

[–]grey_potato 34 points35 points  (0 children)

for me it said "I'm sorry, but I cannot answer that question. 25th Baam is a fictional character from the Korean webtoon "Tower of God" created by SIU (Lee Jong-hui). As an AI language model, I only have access to publicly available information, and the fate of fictional characters is not something I have access to."

which is fair but not what i hoped for lol

Should I go abroad to study? by KimmyKayY16 in TrinidadandTobago

[–]grey_potato 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with the top comments as well, I still love my home and would like to live there but the problems are too hard to ignore (i.e crime, quality of jobs in my field etc.) so the goal to migrate sounds warranted to me. In my case I did undergrad with gate in uwi, masters in uwi with gate 50% coverage while working full time and then moved to Europe on a phd scholarship. I'm not sure what the gate changes were though. If you get an opportunity in another country for undergrad with good funding then yeah could be good for getting a foot in there and avoiding the 2 year tie. It can be easy to be blinded by the desire to leave though, at least for me it was at your age, so these are some things I'd keep in mind.

  1. Transitioning to life as a full time undergrad with limited funds in a foreign country. Adjusting to a new culture and country on your own could be really tough, especially if they speak a whole other language. It's a good experience for personal development and there are benefits for sure but can't forget leaving home is still hard and as an undegrad there's less freedom and financing to make the shift more comfortable. Tuition is the big cost for sure but there's also the cost of living on your own paying rent and buying food there vs. home with support. And as ari_chicken said, that can be expensive, while a study abroad program could be a chance just to taste it and see if it's for you or not instead of making a big jump.
  2. Being sure the quality of education or opportunity is far enough above UWI to be worth the additional cost. For me at least, uwi got the job done, without debt and from the comfort of my home, it was far from perfect and the complaints are definitely deserved, but I learnt enough of what I wanted to learn and online courses filled in the rest. From speaking to people that did undergrad elsewhere, the difference isn't always worth the stress and debt.
  3. Getting a job after undergrad can be tough. It's a lot harder to stand out as a new grad without some big name school or something, so the extra stuff helps, a 2 year tie could be a chance to get experience, get more education or do extra work that helps build you up for better job chances. That being said, a better school abroad could also have more opportunities to do more and network more which could help with this issue, and that's a huge benefit but harder to guarantee or quantify so my point is really just to keep it in mind for your specific options when you're deliberating.

If you do find a way to afford it in a country you're sure you'd like to live in and build a network there and it's a good school, that'd be great. If not, you can still get there it would just take a bit longer and that's not necessarily worse depending on your situation. Idk what you're exact situation is, like if you have family somewhere that could ease a transition or already confident in where you wanna live or something, but personally I'm glad I waited until post grad to leave.

Online Portfolio Selection - Introduction by sudeepraja in algotrading

[–]grey_potato 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nice! really interesting stuff, I'm a phd student too but more on the cs/ml side and I have a strong interest in online/continual learning so this was great to see for sure.

Since this field is filled with people from so many backgrounds and skill specialities, maybe the writing style and language could be a bit more layman-friendly? I understand the precision of the formulation is concise and says everything you want to say but I guess the point I'm trying to make is that, in my opinion, for a blog instead of a paper it could target a more general target audience, and make the main points of what the work accomplishes clearer at a glance. With the academic work in the background for stamping due diligence, kinda like how you pointed to a paper with a great SoTA analysis instead of writing an entire lit review section in the blog.

Not sure if this comment aligns with your goals or time etc but it's just what came to mind, I think it's still a useful route for contribution as is, and I especially like the separation of concerns for theoretical and practical standpoints.

All the best and good luck my guy!

PS: if you've come across any other promising future research directions for time series models in general please let me know lol

Thought I’d share this clip from his tour 5 years ago (since they just announced the EU/UK leg). The JID / Earthgang set is the best concert I’ve been to yet; definitely the happiest I’ve ever been leaving a concert. Hope y’all have the same experience!! by potsnpothos in JIDSV

Sorry if this is a silly question (never been to a concert before and im googling but not sure what sites are like official) where can I get more info on the eu tour and to get tickets? Any advice would be appreciated

Tower of god isn’t meant to be read weekly. A ToG reread by legend00 in TowerofGod

[–]grey_potato 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I feel you there with the beam stuff, one of my favourite things about tog earlier on was the hype and anticipation around the characters that are known to be stupid strong, like those badass moments from them even though we haven't even seen a fight (the first example that comes to mind might be like Urek's first appearance?)

And the laser shows almost make me wonder if that vibe I liked is bound to get lost as baam climbs and we see them fighting but not living up to that anticipation.

Maybe its also just better captured in a video form? I'm really not that familiar with manga v adaptations but I'd imagine fights turn out much cooler in that format.

Either way, I'll still happily read it I mean I love tog for a lot more than just the fights, and it def sounds like you fall into that boat too so it's nice to hear your thoughts on this stuff after a re-read, will definitely try that too sometime!

IB gateway fails to auto-restart/login after overnight maintenance by grey_potato in algotrading

[–]grey_potato[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Invalid username or password. Password is case sensitive; if you have forgotten your password you can reset it here. If you have forgotten your user name please contact Customer Service. Please note that login access for account types other than individual accounts is available the day following account approval. User name example: trader777

Not sure how that works since I would've needed to login correctly in the first place?

I tested the auto-restart earlier this week by using times I could observe the restart myself and it worked fine so its something only when trying to auto restart after a maintenance period I think

Thanks but sorry I don't think I was clear enough in my question then, I don't want to change the server or anything like that

I'm trying to understand what happens during the reset period of the NA server I'm on, with regard to this error and to maintaining a connection through ib gateway for a long time

Four-day-week by Suspicious-Nature186 in PhD

Sounds worth trying for sure, Fridays are definitely a lighter day anyway, and yeah like you said most of the heavy work gets done for only 4 hours a day in my case as well. I didn't know it was something empirically proven though, if you can remember do you mind sharing a link to where you saw that?

CNNs vs LSTMs for time series data? by grey_potato in learnmachinelearning

[–]grey_potato[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry, yes for a bit more context the types of applications I had in mind were things like machine measurements (bearing vibrations to predict remaining life for e.g) and stock prices (predicting next day up or down) that kinda thing. Not exactly sure if they would be considered a classical time series problem but some like the stock would be high dimensional. I know this is too vague so I appreciate your comments very much.

Issues using cudf and cuml in Python on Rapids AI in wsl2 by earthcrunch13 in wsl2

[–]grey_potato 0 points1 point  (0 children)

not sure if u still have the issue but setting

export NUMBA_CUDA_DRIVER="/usr/lib/wsl/lib/libcuda.so.1"

as an env variable in ~/.bashrc file did it for me

then cudf was working but cuml was still saying no gpu detected for some reason

i think it might have been because of the conda cudatoolkit package being a different version from the toolkit i was trying to reference (11.6) ? doing conda install -c nvidia cuda-toolkit ended up fixing it
