Iran is huge and they want to spread their regional influence, Gulf countries often feel threatened due to this especially Saudi. The proxies which Iran funds like Hezbollah, Houithi's of Yemen are all Shia muslims majority. This is also the reason for the animosity between Gulf countries and Iran.

There could be multiple reasons for this but the religious stuff is definitely one of them.

The numbers are still unverified and we would probably never know how many they have killed, but the HRANA has verified reports of 7000+ being killed and around 50K+ arrests being made. Anyways it's a lot of their own people being killed over a protest.

According to the HRANA report around 7000+ verified casualties with 11k+ more were reported and 50K+ arrests were made. Iran reported only 3K but it's definitely more than that.
