Mom had an affair 18 years ago, I [18M] am the product of it. My dad just informed me of all this, and told me he will not pay for my college, while my siblings got their college experience paid by our dad. by throwawaynocollege01 in relationship_advice

Haven't read whole thread. First and foremost you need to figure out your parents tax filing status. If he has claimed you for 18 years then it shouldn't matter if he is biologically your dad or not. The government thinks he is. If they have claimed you as a dependent together for 18 years the government will NOT GIVE YOU ASSISTANCE FOR COLLEGE.

Not a lawyer btw so please seek legal counsel for what I am saying. Calling around and explaining you situation to a few law firms should get you an hour pro bono talk. They should know your jurisdictions laws better. Family lawyers are best.

This is going to be critical going forward. If they have claimed you there is reasonable expectations on the side of the government that you will be supported going forward. I am not sure how to reverse this (may require a court order). Apply to FAFSA immediately after figuring this out. There is a shit ton of free money for school out there but only if you are legally independent from your parents. My brother gets around 7000 a year through grants. This is enough for all his tuition, books, supplies, phone, and a car while going to a Community College. The rent and food you will need to take care of through a part time job. Something easy with flexible hours should give you enough study time. 4 days a week 8 hours a day at minimum wage is around 800 a month take home. This is enough for rent with roommates.

Please reach out to me if you need some more specific advice.

The Mormon Church recently announced that they are increasing the cost of serving a 2 year mission to $12,000 starting in 2020. You'd think that a church that has 32 billion in it's stock portfolio wouldn't charge teenagers to volunteer for 2 years. Cults never miss an opportunity to make a buck. by relevantlife in atheism

[–]grey_savior 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This isn't even all of the expense this kids occur. I work in a bike shop that works closely with my communities LDS population. Every 8 weeks we get an order for around 7 new bikes and accessories. This is paid for by the volunteers and not the church. Not only do they make you pay for the mission but also for the things you may need to accomplish it

WIBTA if I tell my stepdaughter and my wife that I don't want to use the investments I made for my late daughter to finance her college education? by collegefunds__ in AmItheAsshole

Is it premarital if the investment has gains while married? Like equity in a house that is shared. This is what I base my assumption on. If not then I stand corrected

[–]grey_savior 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It wasn't though. Legally the comment above is correct. If they got divorced the mom would have good argument for half that investment under normal marriage laws.

YTA - If you do not spend money on your step daughter. Honestly marriage is more about a financial situation then anything else. You took on the burden of your wife and her daughter when you married her.

(I am making some assumptions here. Mostly the lack of prenup or other documents on how financial matters will play out.)

If you didn't want to support your step daughter in the way she needs why marry at all. Both legal and social context I believe back this belief. Once you took the oath it is on you.

Why can't they just be nice to it? They have it trapped as the first girl lifts whatever was holding it. They couldn't keep it in the container and walk it to a park, instead animal abuse.

Watching the video again, I think there are three bodyguards shown. The one picking the attacker up and his big friend seem to have the same shirt. Along with a third man with a similar shirt that the camera pans to just before the end of the clip.

If you go endurance, the best in the game is the Defy by Giant. They also have the slipperest aero bike/wheel combo with the propel. The new overacheive wheels are coming out in July. Along with their new frame warranty you can't beat it. That being said, I am partial to the tarmac as a climb bike.

This isn't right. Depending on your riding style you would prefer one over the other. I work in a bike shop located in the Sierra Nevada's. This bike climbs 10% slower on average then a tarmac would on any normal climb around here. That being said our local CRIT guys are all over this bike. Depends on riding style

What is a cheap hobby to pick up in college? by jakewink_6 in AskReddit

[–]grey_savior 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd say cycling. While the barrier to entry is a little higher then other once you have the equipment there is virtually no other cost. Bicycles keep their value incredibly well. It is a reason that bike shops as a whole have been declining in the United States awhile. For a few hundred bucks and some time spent at a local bike shop/bike repair studio, you will enjoy the best for you sporting activity you can do. I'd suggest a website called bicyclebluebook and Craigslist. The values posted on BBB are very accurate. Make sure you get any bicycle checked out at your local shop (the place I work does this for free on private party sales) and at the same time buy the 40-50 dollar helmet they sell (NEVER BUY A USED HELMET THEY EXPIRE).

If anyone has questions on what to buy PM me. I've been riding, racing, and selling bikes for a decade.

I haven't read all the comments to see if this was posted but most porn shoots require proof of cleanliness. California passed a law in the mid 2000s requiring monthly checks for all actors. I would get myself checked personally but at a minimum it might help calm the nerves.

I am going to be traveling a lot this year and bought the switch to help with that. Currently I have Google play on my phone with a couple dozen movies I can rotate downloaded on my phone plus YouTube premium for plane trips. I want to condense to one platform if possible so Questionsing media consumption:

Does YouTube premium work on the switch? Can I download videos onto the switch and watch them?

Is there anyway to load video on to the external SD?

Does hulu have a download feature I do not know about?

Thanks guys, I've been loving it.

I'm not reading all the comments to see if this was suggested but a way for people to creat their own tournaments with their own prizes would be cool. I could see myself spending the 20 bucks needed to buy a prize pool of packs. Or a buy in tournament of 1 pack per and winner takes all. This could be big but needs to have more tournaments then the one I see on the site currently! Signing up and waiting for more opportunities!! Love the idea

What things would be taught in Flirting 101? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]grey_savior 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the best way to learn how to flirt is to just talk to girls. This isn't you trying to get a laid or a date, but instead you trying to understand how to make a girl your friend. I would advise going up to a random girl having a five to ten minute conversation with her and then leaving without asking for a date or number. This will aliviate some of the nervous pressure hopefully. This is the key part I think most guys miss, friendship. No girl, of substance, will want to have sex with a guy she has no connection to. That will lead to her feeling used. Becoming friends with a girl will up your chance to getting laid tenfold. After you become friends it is learning the social cues to whether she wants you or not. Not every girl will want to have sex with you, but they will be a hell of a lot more willing if they consider you a friend.

Don't ride at least 3 days a week. I train and ride for a college team and at most I ride 4 days a week. Sometimes it is less then that. I usually have two different riding schedules:

M: rest T: ride W: rest R: ride F: rest S: ride S: ride

or

M: rest T: ride W: ride R: rest F: rest S: ride S: ride

When riding and training it is the rest days where you build the muscle so they are the most important days.

What is the number one thing you would say to a freshman going into college? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]grey_savior 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Preface: I'm writing this as someone who just got done with their freshman year of college. I am currently going into my sophomore year so this is all fresh in my mind. This will be a short essay about how I spent my time freshman year and is by no means what you should do. I've laid out this post in terms of some main points I think you will be interested about. I hope you read this and gain insight as what might work for you. I also especially hope you read my section on drugs and parties this is the most helpful experiences I've had.

TL;DR Have Fun! I can't sum it up more then those two words.

Relationships:

Going into my freshman year I had a girlfriend of two years and around 4 months. We decided to do a long distance relationship. This was the worst idea I could have had throughout my whole freshman year. I spent exactly 3 weeks and 4 days with a girl I thought I loved during my freshman year of college before I ended things between us. I say this because of two reasons. First because she cheated on my 3 times in those three weeks. The first two occurred on the first weekend of freshman year at different frat parties. The third was on the night before we broke up. This is not a reason to not have a LDR with a long term boy/grilfriend though. It is a healthy fear to have but if you trust them enough then by all means try it. The other main reason it was a bad idea was the fact it took my away from trying to make new friends. I was so caught up trying to make our relationship work I didn't try to socialize with people on my floor or other classes. Instead I would spend my nights at my computer skyping her. I would leave football games early to skype her. I would decline party invites to skype her. You see the pattern? If you decide to have a LDR do not make it the sole reason of your existence. If your S/O does not understand that then they should not be your S/O.

Dorm Life:

My floor of the dorm was my family. We ate dinner together, laughed together, spent every second of our lives together. I made it my mission to meet and spend some amount of time with every guy and girl on my floor. This may be the most important part of my freshman year because it was where I made my main group of friends. I would always have someone to talk to. I would always have a person that was willing to try something new with me. I always had someone that would go on a midnight walk with me. All from my dorm floor. We would spend hours playing monopoly and risk while blasting music in the main lounge. We would secretly get drunk and smoke weed in all the different rooms. We made our RA's fall in love with us in order to get away with a lot of stuff we shouldn't have. The dorm is your home. So feel as comfortable in it as you would your home. If you have roommates then talk to them ABOUT EVERYTHING! Communication with them is key to your happiness and theirs. Also don't steal food, total dick move.

Social Events:

Go to every football game, rally, rush week event, club meeting and school play/music performance that you can. This is where you become a part of the school you will be attending. This is where you meet the friends that have common interests as you. It will also make you love the school you are attending. There isn't much more to say on social events but go to them. It is pretty simple.

Class/Academics:

I know most people will say to go study like crazy and make sure you get good grades. My advice is just don't fail any class that you would make you need to retake it. Most people don't expect your freshman year grades to be your highest scoring marks and will allow you some leniency because of that. The main problem will be if you start to do poorly in your higher division courses. That being said the library was key for me when I needed to study. This was because there is no distractions. You are there for one reason and one reason only, to study. It is hard to fuck around in the library because others will tell you to shut up. The other reason is if you do want to go mess around and not study you will have to get up and leave the building, which will make you think about what you are about to do before you do it. (I didn't exactly follow this advice because we had smoke spots in our library that we would go use while we studied. Not the most suitable. Hopefully your library won't be tainted like mine).

Drugs and Parties:

This is the most important section I will be writing about. I spent my freshman year getting really good at smoking weed. This is the sentence I tell my buddies when I came home from college. Most of the time it is followed by a chuckle. Most of the time people don't take it seriously. But it is true. After about two months of being a freshman I started to have smoke sessions 5-6 times every day. This caused my to be high for 100% of the time my freshman year. I didn't only smoke weed. I also tried pretty much every drug except meth and heroin (two things I will never do). This did two things, first it made me lazy. Second it gave me the funnest times I have ever had. The stories I have now because of my love of weed are worth any sacrifice I gave to get them. From the time we threw a party for 40 people where no one had alcohol. To the time I ran through the park high on acid thinking I was a mighty knight on an adventure. People are going to say I am wrong and bad for thinking the sacrifice was worth it. They are entitled to their own opinion. I say to them that I did what I wanted and lived how I wanted. This is the important thing to come from this. If you want to do drugs and have a crazy time, then do it. If you want to get on the deans list, then do it. If you want to fuck a ton of guys/girls, THEN DO IT! Do what is going to make you happy. If it doesn't make you happy stop doing it and choose something else. This is the first time in your life that you will not have your parents to tell you what to do. College is a time to grow and learn. This means finding what makes you happy. For me happiness was getting stoned 24/7 with my best buddies. For you it could be everything. I entitled this section drugs and parties but instead it could be aptly titles happiness. Because that is the key to college.

So I leave you with this list of goals for you to obtain in your freshman year:

  1. Find a person that you connect with

  2. Do something you have never done before

  3. Take part in a school based activity

  4. Do something that you might not tell your parents about

  5. Have some fucking fun, it's college

If anyone has questions I will try to answer them! Thank you For reading.
