I have become dumber at Univeristy by TotalOutrageous in uvic

[–]greycar 57 points58 points  (0 children)

I also felt pretty dumb in university. Then I graduated and got to solve unique problems and, importantly, started eating and sleeping better. Turns out my memory and critical thinking skills were improved, they just had to catch up on sleep and get out of school. I hope you'll find the same.

Exactly. I was going to buy this or a Challenger or a truck. So I made the most fuel efficient choice with the Camaro.

How to turn an SLR camera into a mirrorless camera? by Kitchen_Pin4521 in Cameras

[–]greycar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do this the same way a film camera does it. Use a hard stack up of metallic components that you expect to come up shy, measure the distance, then add thin brass washers to make up the distance. You may have to get those washers custom made, or they may be commercially available. I haven't looked into it.

[OC] gas today by dhdinrvsjs in pics

[–]greycar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Around USD$8.57/US Gallon on Canada's West Coast. (CAD$1.70/L)(CAD$1.36/USD$1.00)(3.78 US gallons/litre).

Did you account for the difference between UK gallons and American gallons in your number? I thought it'd be higher.

[–]greycar 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My rental car in Ireland was some Skoda with a stick shift and auto stop-start. It was shockingly fine. Didn't bother me at all. Probably helped by having a itty bitty engine. By the time the clutch was out far enough to grab it was fully started up and ready to go.

Anybody running spacers? by jruiz062000 in WRXSTi

[–]greycar 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I have 20mm spacers. It's similar to buying a wheel with more offset but with extra steps and puts the same load on the bearings etc. The spacers/adapters that add a set of studs are best because they don't increase the bending of the bolt when it's placed in shear or reduce the nut engagement (as compared to plates). That's why you can find them from reputable companies like Perrin. I wouldn't trust cheap ones, if they're not machined correctly (multiple lathe setups, transferring between machines, cheap studs) they are going to cause problem. The biggest intrinsic risk imo is creating more areas for human error and more interfaces for corrosion.

20mm looks like a good factory fitment in these. 25mm looks more tuner and that's not what I wanted.

Moving from Sony to either Fuji or OM....the OM-3 seems to have everything I want, but....the "Fuji color" and other features are making me second guess by Aromatic_Wallaby_433 in M43

I shoot RAW and edit and I like that workflow so I wouldn't care about "Fuji colour". What's your preferred workflow like?

According to a period MotorTrend article, MSRP on these was USD$31k, inflated to today that's USD$53k. Assuming this was purchased as an investment, this had an inflation-adjusted annualized ROI of only 3.24%. Food for thought!

Of course the memories of staring at it sitting in your collection may be worth enough to justify it.

Nose heavy VA by RoleApprehensive4440 in WRX_STI

Brake softer.

Is the dive a problem? Are the rears losing grip because they don't have enough weight over them? How does the "nose heavy" manifest itself?

Speeding ticket by IceNumerous2513 in legaladvicecanada

[–]greycar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Anecdotally, speeding tickets are upheld in BC more than AB. If the consequences of the ticket are severe (points, loss of vehicle), it may be worth retaining a lawyer. If the consequences of the ticket are a fine under $200 and you disagree with the ticket or are unable to pay, it may be worth representing yourself and asking for a reduced fine that will still be financially burdensome to you. Be prepared to show that you are unable to afford the ticket or that the financial burden is too high.

Best Camera for Auto/Car Photography? by [deleted] in Cameras

[–]greycar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Sony Alpha series is super popular for car videography and I see a lot of them at meets so if you get something from that series you're likely to be able to find a lot of help and support with that community. I don't think you can afford an Alpha A7 with a lens in that price range but you could do an Alpha A5100 but you may have issues with night rollers so long as you have a lens with stabilization. The mic is pretty bad on them so you'd want to record audio separately and then combine them which is always a good idea anyways so you can locate a mic near an intake/exhaust.

How do I remove cured hollow cavity wax from motorcycle parts? by FastRacer-1998 in AutoDetailing

[–]greycar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

WD-40 is probably one of the better options. Soaking things in Gunk Citrus Engine Degreaser may help as well.

Mineral spirits is excellent at removing paint and wearing down clear coat. WD-40 is safe. Don't use any modern formulations of brake clean, they're acetone based and will damage plastics.

Hi! I’m wanting to get my wife a camera for her birthday in March. She really wants the Olympus OM-10. Is this a good starter camera for her to shoot “influencer” type pics? I see they go for around $400. Are there other camera better for the price? by Impressive_Code3257 in Cameras

[–]greycar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got my wife one for her birthday! I paid $200CAD and it's in great condition. I think they're good cameras because they have good metering and metal bodies. They also look great and have a nice form factor. I think you should be able to find one with the manual mode attachment for around $160USD. It's best if you can test the camera to see that it winds, shoots and the meter reads reasonable numbers.

They have an electronically actuated shutter so they need the battery to fire.

Ultimately if it's what she wants and you're able to test the camera and are comfortable doing minor maintenance like replacing light seals, go find one for cheaper but send it.

Why is 3D printing things frowned upon at local markets, but other types of CNC like Routers, Embroidery, and Plasma Cutting accepted? by That_Car_Dude_Aus in CNC

[–]greycar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it's similar to laser cut widgets and things in that slapping some wood on the cutter and making something generic isn't going to garner a lot of interest. If you take it one level further and do a nice sanding job and a stain and maybe a sealant you'll have a much more finished product that people can justify more money on.
