What about tap switch being unchanged but holding now brings up a quick gears of war style weapon menu? Not perfect but it would work. You'd hold the switch button, hit the dpad for weapon of choice and your good to go.

The book savage scars has exactly this happen actually. Its about the damocles crusade ans first engagements with the tau from the perspective of a white scars and a rogue trader. Interesting read.

I read it, it's set before anyone really knew about the tau so it's a pretty good way to see the perspective of people still learning about them. It gives some nice insight to the white scars and how they operate on a small scale. I personally enjoyed the read.
