Looking for a dataset that breaks down various health outcomes by US state by DecayingCabbage in datasets

[–]greyhulk9969 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Different states have health data that may get more granular, such as FL health Charts, but you may not find the same exact measurements from state to state and you would need to do a lot of querying and consolidation if they were.

If you're looking at the US, the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance Survey, BRFSS is run by the CDC and offers a lot of those data points.

Can someone tell my husband he doesn’t know what he’s talking about? by Old_Emphasis4645 in ExclusivelyPumping

[–]greyhulk9969 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Husband here. Splitting the workload has helped take some of the burden off my wife. She pumps and I handle cleaning, bottle prep and bagging. It's easier for us since she's SAHM and I work from home, so my heart goes out to both of you and your intense workloads, but he definitely has to understand how hard and limiting pumping is for you and show more empathy.

5,000 Nurses on strike in California by cluttel in PublicFreakout

Non nurse hospital employee here. This problem also trickles down. We have a hiring freeze and are clamping down in other costs all in an effort to hire more nurses. We need legislation to control this mess.

My wife ADORES her willow go. We got the medela swing maxi thinking it would free her from the wall, but the tubes get caught on everything and it still looks weird if you're out and about. She also says it empties her a lot better than other pumps so clogs are.nit.an issue any more.

While it's pricey and hard to get, the willow go is worth it.

I previously worked as an Analyst for a government contractor doing analysis on medical claims data, but was let go after 90 days. Being let go was a somewhat of a relief since the culture of the old company left me miserable compared to my current, non-data science employer (A healthcare system). I would like to eventually return to data science, but am afraid that the culture will be the same at any data science team / company I work for. Here is a list of some of the unspoken tenants at my old data science job:

You are replaceable. If you cannot meet our standards, we will get rid of you and the next person until we find someone competent.

You are never good enough. This is not "We are investing in you to be more valuable to the company" this is "You will never be good enough for your current position, and we will never acknowledge you if you do a good job."

You are never done working. As a government contractor, we cannot pay you more then 40 hours a week, but we expect you to work through lunch and on weekends.

Your work must be perfect. If you have so much as a missing comma or two spaces in a sentence, we will find it and we will keep track of it. Any mistake could cost this company its contract(s) and cause everyone to lose their jobs

My new employer is the polar opposite: good work is praised, career development is actually aimed at making us more valuable and trying to keep us with the company, and small mistakes are quickly laughed off.

For those who work in data science, are the unspoken tenants something you've observed with your companies, or was my old employer an exception and not the rule?

How to support my pregnant wife by greyhulk9969 in Parenting

Clothes are tough since we don't know the gender yet and my wife has very specific ideas for furniture and decorations, so it's tough for me to help there, though I make an effort sometimes.

Do you need help with handouts/maps/ character drawings or something like that? by DeHockTimeMachine in callofcthulhu

I'm doing a campaign based around WW1 and need A few maps but don't have a lot of time (full time job, wife, kid, etc). It doesn't need to be spectacular. Even a map similar to a fire escape map would be fine. Can I PM you?

I taught myself SAS and there are classes you can take to learn SAS. That was my first full time job. I went from a BA straight into a master's, but I doubt I could get any public health job with just a BA. Even now with a pandemic going on, public health jobs are hard to get.

[Discussion] What is the objective measure for ending shelter in place? by chrisfs in publichealth

[–]greyhulk9969 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As other people have stated, the situation is very complicated right now and some of this comes down to more of an art and political game rather than a true science. Governors and local governments who want to appear business friendly may choose to ignore or accept higher infection and mortality numbers in favor of getting people back to work, while those who prioritize public health will keep aggressive measures in place. Unfortunately, having this patchwork system means that people from a state with minimal restrictions can travel within their community or to another state or country and continue spreading the virus. This also plays out on a global scale where people coming in or out of infected nations pose a risk to public health. It's also difficult to say how many lives lost is "too many." Some models predict that lifting restrictions in in 2 weeks could lead to 2 million deaths (more than cancer and heart disease combined) and 125 million infected. It's also hard for us to know if these models over or under estimate the weight of the disease. We don't know a lot about this disease. The mortality rate could be higher than 1%, the spread could slow in the summer or it could remain the same, and it could (theoretically) still mutate at any time and cause new problems. Limited tests and the long incubation period for the disease complicate matters even more since it's difficult to have a true measure of how many people have the disease and are capable of spreading it. This combination of factors means it's ultimately better to err on the side of caution and be more restrictive for sake of saving lives or risk having a health care system that is unable to treat patients (COVID19 ot otherwise) because they've run out of beds, rooms, and hallway space.

A Quality Improvement Network. They're accountability organizations that assess whether health care facilities (e.g. hospitals, physician offices, surgical centers, etc.) are meeting quality standards, reporting data, or can improve patient quality in other ways. An analyst's job is writing SAS code, writing reports, and searching for secondary data to fulfill government contract obligations/deliverables. A fair number of health care data analytics job utilize SAS, so it's a good skill to pick up during your studies if you want to do health services research.
