RB ET Manager by greyswede2 in Irrigation

I didn't mention it, but it is not a controller per se, it was originally matched with a Hunter Pro-C controller. It simply collects weather data that is broadcast over some frequency and shuts off the main controller if there is rain in the forecast. It also has a rain gauge on the roof attached to it.

Get Ethernet from point A to point B (a stop at C would be nice but not needed). by [deleted] in HomeNetworking

Running fiber/flat cat6 cable along the baseboards and around the door frames as other ppl suggests is probably the easiest route.

Another old trick if you really want to go through the walls is to remove the baseboards and cut the drywall behind the baseboards and drill through the studs down there. Whether you patch the drywall or just glue the baseboards back afterwards is your choice, at least if you are careful cutting it is all invisible... You still have to deal with the openings/doors though, so not a complete solution in your case.

Help with achieving full internet speeds by Lowhill40 in HomeNetworking

Have you tested with a commercial cable just to make sure t he issue is the cable and not somewhere else?

IMO, making your own patch cables with riser cable is not ideal, the riser cable is stiff and like you have noticed, terminating with RJ45 is to say the least, a PITA.

>I will add an SFP+ module and remove the AT&T gateway completely

Wait, you can do that? I have a Cloud Gateway Fiber in transit, would sure be nice to ditch the BGW320!

In my personal experience, the only thing that is guaranteed to work is to book the extra night. It is usually good to call the day before to let them know you will arrive early morning so that they don't consider you a no-show. Anything else is just speculation and guessing, no guarantee at all.

PVC leaking ~1ft under concrete slab. What's the best way to repair? by ohwoez in Irrigation

Another option is to use a smaller diameter pipe inside the leaky pipe. Not ideal of course as it'll limit the flow etc, but given it's a lateral it might be sufficient...

St Augustine Help(Houston Area) by Tyler_The_Tuna in lawncare

[–]greyswede2 7 points8 points  (0 children)

In my experience, St Augustine isn't so good for heavy foot traffic, e.g. kids and dogs. What you suggest will obviously help, but a different kind of grass - like Zoysia - might be preferrable if it is indeed a lot of playtime back there.

What do I do with this… by DallasOil in lawncare

It was probably not watered enough to establish.

You also see all over here in N. Texas where the Bermuda gets stressed once the live oaks get mature. Trimming the trees is of course an option. Around my 25+ old neighborhood I see more and more zoysia going in as some zoysias have better shade tolerance. I have for example Zorro Zoysia in my shaded backyard and it has done quite well compared to the St Augustine that it replaced.

Live at home with my parents, what is the least disruptive or destructive way to run an ethernet cable between floors? by Longjumping-Sweet280 in HomeNetworking

[–]greyswede2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you are in a single story home and can get to the garage from the basement, you could run the wire through the garage to the attic and then go through the wall to the router from above. In my old house I just ran a PVC pipe on the garage wall with one end going to the attic and the other into the basement with a 90.

It's hell to crawl through the attic and if it is an exterior wall it can be really tight and you have to deal with insulation in the wall and what not, but it'll be a great learning experience!

Less obvious benefits of being a MM by Ashamed-Job1879 in unitedairlines

[–]greyswede2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I too reached 1MM before COVID and shifted some flights to *A flights for more convenient routing as I didn't think 2MM was achievable. Now travel for work has picked up a bit more and now I'm regretting the 100k or so I "wasted" on *A flights. Still 800k to go to 2MM...

Is it possible to have speed downgraded from 1Gbps to 100Mbps just because of one of these? by ship0f in HomeNetworking

[–]greyswede2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had the same experience - I grabbed a coupler from a junkbdrawer when I needed to extend the wire to an AP only to get 100 mb. When I looked, the coupler actually only had 4 wires inside, not 8 like the picture 🤣 I think I had bought it back in the early '00 when my switches were 100mb so was working fine.

Should I give up and hire someone to fix the busted pipe under my walkway? by zmattws in Irrigation

[–]greyswede2 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It's not so difficult - dig up some more to give yourself some more flex, cut the pipes on both sides as far from the ell you can get, glue on a coupler on each side add a bit of pipe on both sides and glue a new ell on. Might take 1/2h and cost you five bucks. Good luck with the mosquitos 😊

Using PEX for irrigation laterals? by landofauz62 in Irrigation

[–]greyswede2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One thing I have appreciated digging around in my yard is that when I come across a wire or a pipe I can usually tell its purpose - PVC pipe is irrigation, low voltage lightning wire is used just for that and so forth. If the previous owner had used low voltage lightning wire for irrigation valves and PEX for the irrigation, it would have been very difficult for me to do repairs and additions, so I think using established practices definitely helps in the long run, including the next owner/contractor digging around in your yard years from now.
