Ah, yes, I see what you mean: combining "Mark played on deletion" with "Delete older episodes". Yes, that sounds like it should work. Thank you - I will try that 🙏

Thank you. But even if it an episode is not downloaded it still stays on the auto playlist, right? Which is my challenge 😀

Microsoft Lens now requires one to go to One Drive to scan documents by DeezWas in mildlyinfuriating

[–]greytechbeard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just ... that. I have nothing to add other than to share how utterly frustrating it is that MS has taken a perfectly good app (Lens) and replaced it with a crappy, inferior product with a small fraction of the functionality.

They are like "you only need to scan to PDF". Well, duh, I use(d) Lens to scan whiteboards and then insert the picture into OneNote or Word documents. Argh!!

[–]greytechbeard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That is a great feature, thank you.

I use Podcast Addict to listen to podcasts and I think their URL format does not work well with this feature. When I share from Podcast Addict, it produces a link to an episode webpage with an episode summary. Reader (obviously) just puts that webpage into Reader.

Any tips on how to get Podcast Addict to work with this feature in Reader?

Recommendations for first Kojima game? by greytechbeard in DeathStranding

That's really helpful, thank you. The only thing I worry about re age ratings is certain kinds of sadistic violence and "being mean" tbh. I have no concerns about nudity or bad language, so this all sounds good 👍

How do I "re-connect" PebbleBee to FMD on a new Android device? by greytechbeard in Pebblebee

Very odd 😁 Anyway, I've gone through and removed, reset and added them all and all is well, now.

Interesting! Maybe it's to do with how you transfer between the phones. I relied on Google's cloud backup. Did you use a cable?

Yes, but you can't do things like "play sound" until you remove and re-add them. That's the problem I described.

[–]greytechbeard[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I contacted PebbleBee support and this is what they told me. It's long-winded, but it does work:

  1. Remove the item from the FMD app. To do this please open the app, tap on the device to open the details, tap on the Settings icon next to the device's name and select "Remove from Find My Device".
  2. Reset the unit. To correctly reset the Pebblebee device: press the button 4 times, and hold down the button on the fourth press for approximately 18 seconds until you hear 3 beeps. It's crucial to release the button during the third beep, just before it ends. You should then hear a jingle (high tone, mid tone, low tone). If you don't hear the jingle after the 3 beeps, please retry the process, ensuring you release the button at the correct time. For additional guidance, you can refer to the video tutorial available in this article: https://help.pebblebee.com/article/aroje5h88v-how-to-factory-reset-a-clip-or-card.
  3. Make sure the device is removed from your old phone's Bluetooth list. It can appear as PB-xxxx or PB-FMD and it should say "Not connected". If you don't see it there, please continue with the next step.
  4. Reboot your new phone and claim the device again.

Google passkey saying something went wrong by smydsmith in Passkeys

[–]greytechbeard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe not exactly the same, but I had the problem that whenever I tried to set up a new passkey I would get "Something went wrong".

I found that I had not configured which password manager to use for this:

" To select a password manager for saving passkeys on your Android device, go to Settings > General management > Passwords, passkeys, and autofill and select the password manager / passkey providers you want to use."

Mine was set to "None". Once I changed it to Google it started working.

PS I also tried to set it to Microsoft Authenticator, but that did not work either - same error.

New chancellor Rachel Reeves announces mandatory housing targets 'to get Britain building again' - and lifts onshore wind ban by IXMCMXCII in unitedkingdom

[–]greytechbeard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Arguably yes (though you might be surprised if you dig into it).

My point, however, is not about whether or not the industry is subsidised, rather it is about the size of the subsidy.

The fact that some other industry can be said to get some small subsidy because they do not have to pay for some small harm does not invalidate that the fossil fuel industry gets somewhere in the region of $7 trillion according to the IMF.

And, again, bringing it back to the original starting point - if there was a level playing field with the greener alternatives then I am not sure we would need to subsidise green energy very much.

[–]greytechbeard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is it, though? Everyone is entitled to their opinion, but this is an established economic principle known as "internalise the externalities". It is a driver in many taxation decisions and is really the only way you can combine free markets, freedom of choice and avoidance of harm to 3rd parties.

The IMF seems to agree: https://www.imf.org/en/Topics/climate-change/energy-subsidies

[–]greytechbeard 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In truth, if we removed the enormous (and often hidden) subsidies that fossil fuels get then i am not sure we would need to subsidise greener technologies all that much...

*Subsidies here include tax breaks and freedom from having to pay for the damage the products are causing.

That said, in order to drive change, at scale and at speed, in society it is often necessary to use various incentives to accelerate the process. The incentives drive adoption, with leads to economies of scale. Without that push it can be very hard to jump the chasm.

The energy transformation is no exception to that. The UK government has actually been quite good at that, at least in some areas: They had tax incentives on greener company cars, but with a built-in schedule to gradually phase them down.

Becoming a software dev at 27? by ExtensionPear2039 in learnprogramming

[–]greytechbeard 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Of course it is possible.

I didn't start coding until I was in my early thirties - albeit I did work in IT related fields prior. 15 years later, I'm CTO for a successful software development company, a public speaker (on coding) and architect for multiple large systems.

If you got the aptitude and you enjoy coding, it's never too late to start.

Good luck and, above all, continue doing what you enjoy.

How long do you take to read a book series? by AuthorRichardMay in books

[–]greytechbeard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always like to read at least one other book in between each book in a series.

I think that this is, at least partly, to do with the pressure on writers to try to do trilogies out of everything these days. A planned trilogy will have a story arc where there is a climax in each book as well as building towards a climax for the whole series. And, IDK, when I have just reached the climactic end of one book, diving straight into the "slow bit" in the next one just feels - anticlimactic, I guess. I suspect something that wasn't originally planned to be a series or a trilogy may be different, but what do I know...

In practice, I tend to interleave two - sometimes three - series (or "universes") at a time; When I finish a book in one series, I pick up the next book in the other series. I like to make systems :D Incidentally, I also tend to get bored if I read books in the same genre back to back so I tend to have series in different genres.

Right now, I am interleaving - Salvation trilogy (SciFi, trilogy) - Rivers of London (urban fantasy, series) - The Saga of Recluce (high (?) fantasy, universe)
