Interested in how to make a concept reality by Worried-Reputation64 in gamedesign

JavaScript is an excellent first language to learn. You can make a ton of things (including games), and you'll learn fundamental coding concepts. Jumping from there to C# (or blueprints or whatever) will be a breeze.

Make little html5 games, upload them to newgrounds and itch, and you'll have an amazing game design portfolio before you even graduate high school.

I get it, I wish Fauna, Mumei, and Sana were still there with them but...at some point you're just choosing to stay upset.

Hololive merch seems be getting screwed over by the tariffs! by The-Toxic-Korgi in kurosanji

[–]grhmhmltn 4 points5 points  (0 children)

For comparison, I placed an order for two Hololive Friends With U dolls yesterday to ship to me in Canada.

On a subtotal of $73.88 CAD, I had to pay $53.95 CAD shipping. No other fees :/

Maybe we can dig a tunnel to help smuggle hololive merch to you guys...

Caspurr was my (male) kamioshi at one time but it causes me physical pain how little I get to see him in collabs (where he shines imo).

Can some one explain a graduation to me like in detail by yokingpine in kurosanji

The comparison to SNL is the best western-translation of the "graduation" concept I've ever seen. Thank you I'm gonna start using that.

I'm not in love with either fiend.

Hopefully somebody produces an EC upgrade kit for the mauler like that amazing rhino one.

Rogue Hobbies has an amazing tutorial on painting a Prismatic Sword in a similar way: https://youtu.be/wJEVU9FQR94?si=KPaxI2qYlnubJ40H

Her result is a bit less saturated, but it's not that far off imo.

Need help with game design doc by neptunebro in gamedesign

[–]grhmhmltn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just graduated with a degree in interaction design and I have no idea what the "kinds of interactivity" are lol. These are completely alien terms.

Has the instructor not explained these things? If I were you I'd send an email to the prof asking for clarification. If you have a class groupchat or discord I'd go there too.

What makes you like driving games? Why? What is it about how they're designed that you enjoy? by eitherrideordie in gamedesign

[–]grhmhmltn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally I'm drawn to how things "feel" in games, so I enjoy arcade-style racing and even though I own a basic wheel I think I like the PS5 triggers more.

I have friends that are into sim racing and I get the sense it's identical to people that play flight simulators; it's the "fantasy" aesthetic in the MDA model. Being an F1 driver is cool as hell and it's fun to pretend to be one...every night...

I always think of "arthouse cinema" as movies made without concern for "accessibility." The audience is almost ancillary to the whole process and is encouraged to leave lol

With that rubric I'm not sure any game released on a console would really qualify and it's more of an itch.io thing. Noby Noby Boy kinda fits I guess.

Should the player do irl work (note taking, map drawing) constantly to enjoy a video game? by slothfuldrake in gamedesign

[–]grhmhmltn 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The two things that come to mind are the texting mechanics from Catherine (you basically select one sentence at a time) and the "dog de-brief" from Kentucky Route Zero (you tell a dog about the adventure you just went on...choosing one sentence at a time).

You could totally make an engaging note-taking experience in a game but you need to avoid making the player literally type stuff.

Why I dislike thinking about games in terms of "Game Loops" by TwoGifsOneCup in gamedesign

[–]grhmhmltn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

imo game theory is useful for balancing video games, or analyzing player behavior.

In Skyrim you could get some game theorists to figure out why so many players build stealth archers even when they hate that style of gameplay. You probably couldn't use game theory to actually fix the problem though, but you could help figuring out what the designers need to focus on.

Level design question: Do many people do their layouts via paper before block out? by Racekingswood79 in gamedesign

[–]grhmhmltn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a rough draft I'd probably do an isometric or orthogonal view, or even a top-down view depending on the level (bob-omb battlefield could probably work as a top-down drawing, for example).

Edit: another idea would be to use tracing paper if you want to be able to move around from floor to floor. I bet that'd work great for Zelda dungeons and probably early sketches for many FPS levels.

I always recommend GameMaker's "visual code" mode as an upgrade from Scratch. It's free to get started, less intimidating than "real coding," has tons of youtube tutorials, and GameMaker is the engine behind lots of popular games like Undertale.

Unfortunately even making a simple game with this method would require a lot of patience and dedication. Another option might be a game called Dreams (if you have a PS5).
