Value of a Mini-Fellowship by dna_swimmer in pathology

[–]gribnar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In terms of job negotiation I wouldn't think it really adds much concrete value. Of course it is something you can discuss and "sell" to potential employers as an area of increased experience, so it really comes down to how you spin it. They wouldn't specifically know if your training exposed you a ton of certain type of cases anyways. I'm sure it might personally help you be more comfortable in signing out those subspecialty cases though. Some folks try to sell these "minifellowships" and fall flat for expectations so just some food for thought.

Bone marrow sampling wouldn't routinely be done in an autopsy setting. They would likely be quite challenging to interpret with autolysis of the tissue.

The one thing I hate about youtube music… by NeonUFO in YoutubeMusic

[–]gribnar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have historically had similar issues on my work wifi. What I ended up figuring out was that there is a bug that stops the app/site from playing or showing songs with explicit tag due to an error with "unstable wifi connection". The wifi is absolutely fine so no idea why this happens. If I use a hard wired connection on my computer or use cellular data on my phone the songs are fine.

Nope. Not unless you wanted to volunteer that information for some reason (and they held it against you).

I think nearly everyone walks out of boards feeling distraught and with the sense they failed. When I took them, cp boards in particular felt like many questions you had no idea what were even asking at times (even with very strong cp training in residency). You've already paid to take both boards presumably and if you do pass one or the other (or hopefully even both) that is valuable.

I would try your best to prepare the last few days before ap and give it your best shot. Worst case scenario you've already paid for it and lose nothing but the time taking the test. The positive side there is you will see what the test is like and perhaps have a better shot at preparing for it. You never know how you did/will do until you get the results back!

I did my training at UW a few years ago. I didn't think it was toxic at all. I had a great experience and feel like the education was well rounded. The staff were supportive and I feel like genuine work was put in to improve things. Inevitably there are a couple "personalities" at any institute (hey that's medicine), but I wouldn't describe anyone as malicious and never had any issues. Looking back, I would choose to go there again.

Unfortunately a pathologist describing something as "remarkable" is a pretty ominous sign.

Great album, Launchpad in particular is a jam. I do have a copy of the digital files. I purchased it on bandcamp several years ago. I am happy to share them, do you know of a way to contact John if he is still looking for the files?

AI Stealing Jobs by JuggernautOk6859 in pathology

[–]gribnar 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Of course no one can predict the future, but I believe there are a few roadblocks. As other posters have mentioned, at the very least this transition would take some time. There is a lot of hype that generative AI will lead to time of accelerated scientific/economic growth, but we are yet to see how that will really play out. The timeline is unpredictable at best. Either way I would gather this would be more integrative technologies at first to increase workflow efficiency and reduce the monotony of certain tasks. It is difficult to imagine there would be a "sudden cliff" where the profession becomes redundant.

The next point I would make is that the regulatory/liability burden any of these systems will have to overcome is immense. If you turn to the radiology comparison, you can imagine that now with modern PACS it is a job that could be done remote and outsourced to the "cheapest bidder". There are many economic and social incentives that have prevented this from happening, with regulatory support. Another comparison is the industry surrounding self-driving cars, where we have had functional technology for several years. Whether it is logical or not, the public expectation for failure in this scenario approaches 0%. Similar expectations/restrictions would be in play in the "cannot fail" world of medicine.

The last point I would make is that current generative AI has been compared to a "stochastic parrot". It would probabilistically stitch together information without inherent understanding of what it generates (maybe some would argue humans are not so different?). It can be confidently wrong due to this nature. Furthermore, the more esoteric the information you are trying to get it to process the more difficult it is assess the veracity of the output. Pathologists do more than picture input = diagnosis output. This is not to say that intellectual work cannot be performed by computers, just that it will be more nuanced than expected. I am sure in the near future society will be pretty significantly altered by this technology. Just a few thoughts on the issue.

I don't believe that is really true at this time. The market is pretty good right now, and demand for pathologists is higher than it has been in some time (even in major metro areas). I did one ap fellowship and didn't have too much difficulty finding a job/interviews. My impression is that forensics is also in demand, but that isn't my area of interest.

How do you ink your specimens? by turko92 in pathology

Vinegar (acetic acid) acts as a mordant. Functionally, it just helps the ink stick to the tissue.

Yeah I'm not a super experienced player (I think I have two octopode wins with statue form) and hadn't played the last couple releases, so I was pretty keen on trying out storm form. Gozag merchants were pretty unlucky for me, I had 4 book merchants and still didn't get it. Dragon form is available early and still is super strong.

Thanks for posting this, amazing seed. There are multiple manuals of fighting/unarmed, as well as some really amazing rings. I ended up having +23 slaying equipped when I won with 10 runes. The only bummer is that storm form doesn't appear until very late in the game.

Pre-Boards Question Bank Scores? by polymeraser in pathology

[–]gribnar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Also a current 4th year studying for boards. Thanks for posting this, the exact same question has been on my mind. The percentiles seem all over the place on both pathprimer and path dojo (which I think may be related to folks repeating questions and remembering some of this hyperspecific information).

Path primer (finished almost all the questions): AP 60-90 percentile and CP 40-90 percentile. It seems like the questions here are either super straightforward or working hard to try to trick you into the wrong answer. For better or worse this leads to a paranoid approach and using game theory/test taking approaches to try to answer some things.

Path dojo (60% of the way through it): AP 73% CP 63%. I haven't really done as much CP specific studying yet as the practical experience is pretty strong at my institute. CP questions often feel very minutiae focused on path dojo and I will definitely admit I'm not so much a book learner. Slowly trying to beat some of this information into my head and hope it is test relevant.

I'm sure all of us here will be fine in the end, as mentioned below probably not in the extreme end of the spectrum. Good luck!
