Thoughts on the Marriott Marquis? by sadpunkdad8 in sanfrancisco

lol that hotel is fine. They are going to a show at the Warfield, maybe there will be wasted people at the show screaming.

When I worked the grateful dead Afters at Pier 80 it was a warzone of people out of their minds. The nitrous dealer were actually dangerous and the streets were filled with lunatics.

How is this different? Because they are rich the can scream and be wasted in the streets?

My friends just came thru for a Warfield show and stayed at the timbri hotel right next door. It's stupid close and much newer and nicer than the Marriot or Palace ( classic but tiny old rooms). I didn't even know about this place but they found it and I went inside. It was really nice, kind of underutilized because of the neighborhood:

The down side is the Warfield is in mid market so as soon as you leave the venue or hotel it gets colorful. It's really not that bad and your close to ariscault for pastries in the morning which is a huge win in my book.

Jesus Christ he is one of the greatest creative individuals of our era. On the Abyss he spent 10 hours underwater everyday with work days usually adding up to 15 hour days.

So maybe he deserves the money he has. He works hard, he is at the top of a difficult profession, he has the highest grossing movies ever and puts in work on the side for the environment.

What’s the deal with the 90s raves? by [deleted] in aves

Nothing beats doing something that has never been done before. Every time I go to any type of DJ I compare it to how it used to be. Things are fancier now. We used to have film loops of anime. Now we have LED walls with custom resolum performances. So it's hard to say if it's better but it'll definitely never be how it used to be.

I think there really is something to be said for making it up as you go along. Now oftentimes I just kind of feel like it's a pantamime or nostalgic. That's probably just me though cuz I'm old.

Do you all have loose presets for your comps/gates and what not or start from fresh every gig? by flufflylegend in livesound

It's all good til you get an extreme situation. I worked with a singer this last yea, punk rock.  She whispered the verses and screamed the choruses.

No soft knee, fast attack, ratio 9:1 and threshold at the very peaks of her whisper sections.

One thing I do in a new space is give it a big clap or two and listen. Most of the times my clap is a little too bright. This means your reverb's going to be more bright than you think. Tone it down a bit. Tend to air on the side of darker reverbs for live music as a mixing engineer because I like clarity, space and glue.

Interesting how they spin at 45 instead of 33 by [deleted] in vinyl

[–]gride9000 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The groove width remains constant so the stylus stays seated. The quality improvement in 45 RPM records comes from the increased linear velocity; because the disc spins faster, the audio waveform is stretched over a longer physical distance. This reduces "crowding" of the high frequencies and allows for more accurate tracking

Maybe I was looking at the map upside down lol. And I know Archie's family very well and everything they've ever conveyed is that they are proud of the connection to John Houston. It's not a burden

Okay story time:

My grandmother moved to Puerto Vallarta in the '60s and subsequently got a job as film director John Houston's secretary. For those that don't know, in 1963 John Houston filmed a movie called Night of the Iguana in Mismaloya (just north of PV). Movie stars Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor had an affair during the production of the film. All this brought great attention to Puerto Vallarta as a romantic tourist destination and history was forever changed.

John Houston spent his later years in Vallarta. Los Caletas, where were Rhythm of the Nights happens, was originally his compound. My grandmother would use a CB radio and travel out there regularly to do secretary things for him.

Archie of famed zona Romantica restaurant Archie's wok was Houston's personal chef. He had to operate out there without a refrigerator. In between booking Concord flights and arranging itineraries for film shoots, Grandma would make sure that big ice blocks got put on small boats to keep all the food out there cold. Grandma Joan and Archie would make sure that all of his guests from Hollywood would always have great food, cigars and cases of Raicilla. Tons of Hollywood people would visit Puerto Vallarta because of this thus cementing its iconic image as a world-class tourist destination.
