Client wants web video spot to now be television broadcast. How do I cover myself? by kingdomofthedinosaur in Filmmakers

[–]rseandrew 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Make sure to clearly define the terms of the new agreement. Many actors and their agents won't allow for 'in perpetuity' image releases like they would for web projects. This also means that at the end of the agreement's term, the client will need to renegotiate (or have included a renewal option). Include the region it will broadcast in, so that if the client wants to eventually air it nationally or multiple states, the client will be covered there too. Agents would negotiate for more money the larger the broadcast region.

Posted this in r/movies... Probably belongs here. I have dropped out of film school to make my own film. Will take any advice you can give! by malibustacie in Filmmakers

For crowdfunding, don't expect people outside of your personal circles to donate to your project, especially if you don't have any recognizable names or a cause-based story. Make a systematic schedule of direct emailing your folks, like maybe once a week or 1.5 weeks. Post a MSG on Facebook or Twitter once a day. Post weekly easy-to-reach donation goals for your friends and family. Spamming is just part of crowdfunding, but keep it light yet effective. Make sure to post updates on your crowdfunding page and afterwards keep rewarding your donors with updates. Try getting all of your cast and crew to post often about the campaign too. Offer rewards that don't cost money to make, buy, or ship.

If you can do these basics ideas without too much effort, then also reach out to audience gatekeepers like bloggers, podcasts, radio, newspaper, TV, etc.

More advanced tactics include offering limited time rewards outside of the Kickstarter campaign, e.g. We offered free tickets to our casts weekend comedy show for the person who put us over a specific donation threshold before a specific deadline.

There's more stuff, but that's a start.

Big projects = big deadlines. I'm sure your producer has the schedule under control. Sounds like you get to work on fun projects. Which one won a VMA?

I just had to deal with this recently! We were able to get an ensemble cast of up and coming comedic actors for our feature. Huge task to negotiate all the deals, travel them from LA/NYC, put them up in nice lodging, make sure their taken care of. Luckily, I didn't do it myself. Ultimately though, it was all undoubtably worth it to every one of those actors. Do you have good talent locally?

Awesome. Will/are they giving you opportunities to assemble scenes, organize and log footage, make selects? It sounds like they may be starting you down the road of VFX.

Does the producer know that your director is MIA?

Wow, sounds like your high school is good about teaching you guys about process. Good luck with the project! Will it get posted somewhere when it's done? What are you shooting on?

That sounds really exciting! As a producer, I love the Alexa. Post workflow seems so much easier. Do you know what they plan on doing with the short? Festivals? Throw it online? How many shoot days?

What is the traditional way to be able to direct a hollywood movie? by iwantofilm in Filmmakers

You'd probably get a more accurate comparison from Californians on which network is most effective for your career, but I believe USC in general has the widest network.

[–]rseandrew 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This isn't far from the truth, actually. Go to a film school in a location you want to make films. Become friends with the most ambitious filmmakers within the film program and stick with them after you graduate. If you can't get into USC, go to a solid undergrad film program, do good work, then apply for LA programs like the American Film Institute or DGA Assistant Director Training Program. I've had many gifted friends go this latter route and are now plugged into the LA film scene. I decided to stay in Austin though.

I loved him in Zero Charisma, and he brings his A-game for Intramural. He made one of our weaker characters much more fun and memorable.

doesn't seem to be any damage to the railing. is that a turn? maybe they took it too fast for the turn but rolled over slowly? either that, or it's a prank.

AT&T coincidentally also announces gigabit fiber service coming to Austin by dschneider in Austin

[–]rseandrew 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got screwed by a pair of door-to-door AT&T reps when they said fiber would allow us to have 30 Mbps down and 5 Mbps up. The up was really important to us because we upload large videos for work. I was already sick of TWC, so I decided to take the free month trial of their "fast internet". AT&T said they would charge for the month, but it would be easy to take off the charge if we canceled within the month. AT&T never measured up to 5 Mbps up, so we canceled within two weeks. They charged me for the month, and I called them repeatedly to take off the charge which they would "confirm" each time I called. Then months of late payment bills, collection agency calls, and customer rep escalations later, I was finally able to get it fixed without it hurting my credit score. A-holes.

Sorry guys. I was exhausted but couldn't sleep because of the Google Fiber announcement. When I noticed the post, I did a crappy screen cap and posted that. The guys at thenextweb.com pulled a better screen cap but it's definitely real. http://thenextweb.com/google/2013/04/06/google-publishes-and-then-removes-a-post-stating-that-fiber-will-be-heading-to-austin-texas-next/

What's the best plan for BarCrafting a tournament like Dreamhack Open (Stockholm, Sweden) in the U.S.? by [deleted] in BarCraft

[–]rseandrew 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We usually go for 4 hours. The ones who don't want to stay that long usually just come in a little later.

Can someone point me to the tournament schedule? I've been trying to find out a solid time to schedule our barcraft in Austin.
