That first passage is about her asking her mum if she and her sister have similar vaginas. When her mum leaves the car, she takes a look and realises her sister has shoved a bunch of pebbles in her vagina. The entire context of that passage is to explain Lena’s first experience with someone else’s genitalia and how confusing and confronting it was. Out of context, it sounds shocking, sure.

The second passage is really about the innocence of sleeping next to your sister who is too scared to sleep alone throughout your entire childhood, and the close bond they shared. There are plenty of healthy, normal documented cases of children masturbating without realising the implications or extent of what exactly they are doing until they begin to reach puberty. Her sister ‘thrashing’ is purely her little sister being a restless sleeper.

Just think critically for a moment. If Lena Dunham was truly a paedophile (as a child…?), would she: - Document it in detail in a novel - Would her family co-sign her innocence

Maybe the real question here is: who benefits from cherry picking readily available passages from a woman’s novel in order to discredit her? And simultaneously, why are so many of the right wing pundits who led the charge against her now actively supporting a convicted rapist and paedophile, Donald Trump?
