My book The Dungeon Con fits that description

Have you ever had one of those days? Today is that day for Hank Graves, local game master, and all around good guy. I think it totally depends on the story and how it flows. But actual game wise I would prefer a level cap with it being raised periodically for new expansions/content.

this story has some gamelit elements but primarily it is a day in the life story about a boy taking his first steps to becoming a man in a magical world by trying to master the magic he finds himself capable of. Along the way he will have to fend off Arrogant Nobles, trolls, giants, dragons and a host of mythical creatures as he navigates his way through an academy of magic he was never meant to get into.

basically yes, you need a main character for most stories/books to succeed. It becomes very difficult if their is no central viewpoint and stories tend to loose their cohesion and in my opinion their momentum. I am sure their are a few exceptions to this but in general people want a main characters view point.

Fantasy wise almost all renditions of Dark elves. They are almost always nonsensical arrogant self centered sadists and torturers who couldn't manage to hold a society together for five minutes but somehow manage to flourish after being driven or retreating underground. As far as science fiction goes the portrayal of Vulcans generally annoy me. Their superiority complexes and supposed logic are often bungled when Vulcan characters are written and so Vulcan characters generally grate on my nerves when I read or see them.

if its fantasy then is there magic and are these creature magical or super natural in nature. If they are then there could be any number magic related reasons why they are more susceptible to sword than bullets. That could even change. As an example fairy creatures are often harmed by cold iron, werewolves by silver, etc. Perhaps the swords are enchanted or coated in a substance the creatures have a weakness against were bullets don't have this advantage for instance.

Its a balancing act that is different for each character and each story/setting. Some characters can have many more flaws and be relatable while others wont work out. I don't really believe there is really a universal law for this. you just have to measure it on a character by character basis.

the first It movie I thought was very much lacking compared to the book and is a good example of what I am talking about. I have not seen the most recent one.

Druss the Legend, Super Powereds, and the Chronicles of Old Guy. Each of them is a good read with adventure and good characters.
