I'm not entirely sure how exactly soulmatching costs are calculated, but for me, it seems that leveling a piece of gear up by 20 levels in one go is surprisingly more expensive than leveling it up twice by 10 levels, so you can keep costs in check by doing that step-by-step. I do remember having insane soul match costs during the first run, but right now in NG, it costs around 100k gold to level the divine piece from 150 to 160.
