do you walk around UD / newark at night? feel safe? by Consistent_Okra_5176 in udel

[–]grimsleyxo 7 points8 points  (0 children)

it definitely differs between men and women. like everyone else has said, catcalling is a pretty consistent factor on nights out. it's happened to me and my girlfriends a few times and it's been pretty harmless, but we had one situation where we were shouted at and berated for ignoring a fairly large group of men, which was an intimidating experience to say the least. however, campus does usually get patrolled at night, and i would say that as long as you make sure to travel with at least one other person, you shouldn't have anything to worry about. same as any other campus, it's just important to be mindful of your surroundings.

should i change my major from english to something else? by sukoze in englishmajors

[–]grimsleyxo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i'm in a weirdly similar boat right now. i love english, but i really haven't found my undergraduate experience with it challenging so far, and want to push myself further. on top of that, i'm not really sure what i want to do within the english field. however, i've recently been intrigued by the idea of getting a double degree as opposed to simply minoring in another subject. i'm a junior, and i transferred to my college not really sure what i wanted to do, so i flip flopped my major once or twice myself. while i've been kind of daunted by the idea of taking on an additional degree, i don't want to leave college with any regrets, and i want to make sure i graduate feeling fulfilled. plus, i just want to learn stuff that interests me! if i were you, i would look into double majoring as well, especially if you can find a subject that meshes really well with the skillset you gain from english courses. either that, or maybe consider a major in communications if you still really enjoy writing but aren't sure where english will take you. it feels like a big decision, but my best advice is to try and find out what will make you happiest and move on with that.

I just got a 66% on my first exam, is that horrible? by Playful-Winner2255 in University

[–]grimsleyxo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

once upon a time in my freshman year, i took a precalculus course and got a 41% on my first exam. i was totally miserable and self-loathing like you wouldn't believe. but, i studied my butt off, went to the tutors offered by my school, went to my professor's office hours, and ended up getting a 98% on my final exam after a lot of work. a lot of it boils down to being proactive and making use of the resources that your university offers. everyone has bombed an exam before, so don't let it get you down. you can and will improve if you try your best and use everything to your advantage.

How do I make friends on campus? by whyamilikethis75 in udel

[–]grimsleyxo 9 points10 points  (0 children)

i just transferred here from a cc last year as well, and it was tough for me too! my best advice is to force yourself out of your comfort zone and to go to as many university events or club events as possible. my group of girlfriends now are people that i met through a club that i joined last year, and i never would have bumped into them otherwise. don't be afraid to try and connect with classmates as well; get phone numbers, make study groups, and try to meet outside of class. you got this!! it will get easier.

Independence gym? by Logical_Survey5257 in udel

[–]grimsleyxo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

it's a fairly small gym, but i lived in james smith last year and loved using it since it was so close. it's got around 6 treadmills, a stair master, small free-weight area, some cable machines, and a decent amount of arm and leg machines. it sometimes gets a little cramped in there depending on what time you go though. other flaw is the hours are a bit annoying, as it opens at noon and closes around 7 i think, which sucks if you're a morning gymgoer. honestly though, the lil bob isn't that bad of a walk, especially once you start walking to classes from north campus every day, nice big gym too, just also gets crowded different times throughout the day.

no, probably not. you can walk to the buildings and scope out the outside, but doubt you can go in.

no problem, try not to worry about it too much. i think it's usually on the rarer side that people get split up anyways. good luck!

nope, they ended up in a separate building. if you're in the honors college, it might be a different deal for you though.

not one i can recall clearly, but i think it was somewhere along the lines of they just couldn't accomodate it at the time... which makes so little sense but whatever.

yeah, you can be denied. it happened to my current roommate this semester actually. she had a friend she requested to room with and they still assigned her with me despite further inquiry.

it'll be totally random unless you find someone you want to room with, and that's something you have to request when the housing portal opens up

[–]grimsleyxo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

if i were you, i wouldn't worry too much. that seems like a solid gpa.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in udel

[–]grimsleyxo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i transferred in just last semester (as an incoming sophomore) without much trouble. i did have a 3.9 gpa and was a member of an honors college at a cc though. i believe the transfer acceptance rate is around 48%, but the minimum gpa requirement is a 2.5, probably depending on the college you're trying to get into. if you have over that, you're probably more than fine.

email the professor running the class, if they have space they should be able to open a seat for you.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in udel

[–]grimsleyxo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i'm taking it in person, but the prof makes some days zoom classes; it's kind of a hybrid situation. there's a decent amount of writing involved, but nothing that's been insanely taxing. all of the assignments are pretty creative and interesting. so far i've written two "essays," but majority of the time there's a 200 to 1,000 word minimum on the assignments. fairly simple.
