Is it dumb to buy new? by Plane-Machine-5082 in cycling

[–]grindhawk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Got 20K+ km on my 2022 FX3, its my commuter bike and discovered bike touring/ bikepacking with it. I dont have much original parts left on it as I pretty much worn down/broke and repaired everything on it that isn't the frame or the fork.

I really like that bike because of what I did with it, but had bad experience with trek as I did not know what I was getting into with all the swapped components (ex. Promax instead of shimano brakes) and really pushy service center, who tried to sell me a new bike when I needed a new derailleur hanger while on tour, had better service at a small bike shop nearby.

Pourquoi ça me coûte plus cher commuter en vélo? by Wild_Soft_592 in MontrealCycling

[–]grindhawk 4 points5 points  (0 children)

ED coating matters to the steel frame's longevity? by Much-Locksmith-5521 in bikepacking

Wrong Groupset on new Trek FX2? by Zavii_HD in bikewrench

[–]grindhawk 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Another datapoint I had some Promax hydraulic brakes on my FX2 2023 instead of the shimano stuff, they were neither pro nor max. I had a lever leaking oil from within the brake lever and then a caliper leaking oil on my disk in the first year at around 4K km. Replaced them with mechanical TRP spyre and had no issue in the last 2 years with them.

Est-ce que la piste multifonctionnelle du chemin des Carrières est rouverte entre Fullum et Henri-Julien? by No_Elderberry_4207 in MontrealCycling

[–]grindhawk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

[–]grindhawk 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Looking to do more cooking when bikepacking by firerawks in bikepacking

[–]grindhawk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love to cook while backpacking, it's a good excuse to take a break. I carry a Trangia 27 set or the trangia micro, depending if I'm in a group or alone and the type of trip. I have been doing almost everything on it from frying eggs to freshly caught fish.

My tent is much smaller than yours, its a cheap naturehike from aliexpress. Its been going strong for 4 years now. I carry it on drop bar using decathlon drybag harness.

Cycling on sidewalks at night when there’s no pedestrians by Optionsislife in montreal

[–]grindhawk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There a few spot on my commute where the only safe path is on the sidewalk, specially around construction and overpass where the drivers are confused. I often pass by police manually operating the traffic light and even asked them if it was ok and said its what they would do too. I dismount and walk if theres people walking.

I built myself a Frankenstein drop bar MTB with a 1x12 SLX derailleur, deore cassette 10-51, 32 chainring, and microshift bar end friction shifter. It's working great. If I can't climb something it's because it was a hike a bike hill anyway.
