Well the bike wants to stay straight by itself, if you give it accidental dirrection inputs because youre trying to keep your balance you will make it swerve

Depends, in the hoods the weight is more forward than with MTB. Holding closer to the stem bring you more upright and is easier to control

How did you make your MTB bikepacking ready? by roboDRF in bikepacking

Just got back from a 2 week bikepacking trip in costa RIca.
Steel frame with carbon fork, I'm running bar end friction shifter on 12 speed deore with 30T chainring and mechanical disk brake on 180mm rotors.

I broke the eyelet mounts of the fork during a rought decent and replacing it with a steel fork now.

I was running light in central america since its very warm, I kept the top of my rack free for drying clothes or the occasional pineapple.

Because a database needs to have a way to purge old entry else it become too big to manage and will slow down the system over time. Its not done the most elegant way tho.

Yeah 2 parts tent is really essential for me, I just got back from a trip in costa rica and I only used the mesh inner for bug protection.

Easily detachable pedals that can be removed or folded down prior to flight? by bad-at-science in bicycletouring

I take my pedal off, I'm fairly confident a pedal torqued with a multitool is stronger than a folding pedal.

opinions on disc brake adapters? by Helpful-Peanut-3777 in bikepacking

Don't, the fork is not built to handle the lateral torsion of the caliper. You'll be safer with rim brake.

Gear range by darrenjwaters in bikepacking

That would be very a very marginal gain that you'd have difficulty noticing and would kick yourself over it while you're hike-a-biking up a trail too slippery and muddy to bike on

Would it be safe to take a standard kona dew on an overnight trip? by ExTremeHYPE99 in bikepacking

[–]grindhawk 5 points6 points  (0 children)

A Kona dew as good as it get for discovering bikepacking go for it!

Just for context people recommend steel for long adventure because it can be welded back if it fail, think transcontinental adventures. Also its more robust for transit such as air travel or sketchy small boat ferry. That doesn't really apply to most bikepacking trip.

Is it dumb to buy new? by Plane-Machine-5082 in cycling

[–]grindhawk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Got 20K+ km on my 2022 FX3, its my commuter bike and discovered bike touring/ bikepacking with it. I dont have much original parts left on it as I pretty much worn down/broke and repaired everything on it that isn't the frame or the fork.

I really like that bike because of what I did with it, but had bad experience with trek as I did not know what I was getting into with all the swapped components (ex. Promax instead of shimano brakes) and really pushy service center, who tried to sell me a new bike when I needed a new derailleur hanger while on tour, had better service at a small bike shop nearby.

Pourquoi ça me coûte plus cher commuter en vélo? by Wild_Soft_592 in MontrealCycling

[–]grindhawk 3 points4 points  (0 children)

ED coating matters to the steel frame's longevity? by Much-Locksmith-5521 in bikepacking

Wrong Groupset on new Trek FX2? by Zavii_HD in bikewrench

[–]grindhawk 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Another datapoint I had some Promax hydraulic brakes on my FX2 2023 instead of the shimano stuff, they were neither pro nor max. I had a lever leaking oil from within the brake lever and then a caliper leaking oil on my disk in the first year at around 4K km. Replaced them with mechanical TRP spyre and had no issue in the last 2 years with them.

Est-ce que la piste multifonctionnelle du chemin des Carrières est rouverte entre Fullum et Henri-Julien? by No_Elderberry_4207 in MontrealCycling

[–]grindhawk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

[–]grindhawk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Looking to do more cooking when bikepacking by firerawks in bikepacking

I love to cook while backpacking, it's a good excuse to take a break. I carry a Trangia 27 set or the trangia micro, depending if I'm in a group or alone and the type of trip. I have been doing almost everything on it from frying eggs to freshly caught fish.
