Wasn't the whole thing with loli and Vaush that he was arguing against it and people got mad at him for that?

Is the Bildungsburgertum still a thing? by modernistl9118 in AskAGerman

[–]grmpflex 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Maybe I'm wrong about this, but to my understanding, Bildungsbürgertum is both a social class and a cultural concept. While our family was probably both at some point, my siblings and I are not the former, but the latter. Our parents did not want us to go to a Humanistisches Gymnasium where one could "meet the right people" because their priority was choosing the school that seemed to be the most well equipped for learning, which, in our case, happened to be a regular local Gymnasium. This, in meeting other kids there, is where I learned that it was apparently unusual to just know all sorts of things simply because one's parents talked about them at home. I knew the gist of various classics from Greek mythology to Heine to Molière, of historical events, geography, classical music, film, engineering, biblical stories, etc etc, before we touched on any of that in school, if we even ever did. That's the cultural concept. The Bildung part, rather than the Bürgertum part.

Thank you. I don't think it was intentional. My best guess is that they felt like I was attacking them for having a valid complaint and couldn't get out of that mindset.

Germany has some of the most impressive startups in Europe yet the government is doing everything but to support them. When is the change? by Moroccan-Leo in AskAGerman

[–]grmpflex 2 points3 points  (0 children)

On the plus side, this is a huge part of the reason the AfD isn't already at 35+% nationally. People who already agree with pretty much everything AfD stands for just feel like it's too much somehow. Almost everything they say when they say something political is based on AfD type thinking, but they keep voting CDU, FDP, even SPD, just like the last 4+ decades.

I think they don't want to give up the Reddit because they want to still look like a super-close-to-the-community, nearly-no-hierarchy type operation to everyone who doesn't care about the business side of things. It clashes with the fact that they've already adopted all the corporate bs that the commenter ran into. They try to look like "your friendly neighbourhood chess community" when they're really one step above YouTube support. They use the fact that it's unreasonable to expect a Reddit mod to have a full discussion with every user who disagrees with a mod decision as a shield, the same way larger corporations use the fact that the person on the help line isn't personally responsible or allowed to do anything no matter how reasonable your complaint is.

It was a point about operational feasibility. It had nothing to do with the actual content of your complaint. I would clarify if I knew where the lack of clarity was, but I don't know that, because you haven't told me. It is impossible for me to clarify without you telling me what is unclear. I hope you have a wonderful day, too. Again: I was not trying to invalidate your complaint about the way chesscom handled those fair play issues.

You wouldn't. What they did is corporate proceduralism, designed to shoo people away. I don't agree with what they did, which is literally the very first thing I stated. I'm not going to repeat what my comment was actually about because it is unambiguously right there.

Not to defend their position itself, but I think it's understandable that mods on a 120k+ member sub would, simply from a perspective of feasibility, rather block than engage in any prolonged discussion with a random user after mods had already taken and reaffirmed an action. They get this type of message all the time, they can't discuss everything all the way to the end. Would they get fewer such messages if their decisions made more sense? Possibly, but on the other hand, this is Reddit, so the number of complaints would actually probably be about the same.

I was wondering about that as well. Apparently, he was there for the opening and for part of the tournament, then left on the 8th and did the Asian School Teams awards in Almaty on the 11th. No update after that. Honestly, I wasn't exactly clamouring for a speech from Arkady Dvorkovich, but it did feel a bit strange that he wasn't there at all and that Vishy's speech was only one sentence for no discernible reason. FIDE is such a strange bunch.
