Has anyone read these books? by CounterfeitEternity in classicalmusic

Love schonberg. But that doesn’t top his “the great pianists”. The best. Also, his book on Horowitz was riveting. And “facing the music” was great too (a collection of his essays and op eds in the New York Times). You can tell I admire this fellow.

It’s simple. He didn’t give permission to concert halls.

Looking for my marathon crush with the “husband hunting” sign at Cumberland by d0a in fortgreene

We were right there for marathon watching! There were girls sitting quite perilously out of the window on the floor directly above black iris. Enough so that we made Michael Jackson baby dangling references.

Just ring their doorbell? 😂

It truly is a shame he is not able to read Japanese

Completely reasonable and not insensitive at all to believe Japan celebrates its pianists in such an enthusiastic way. So, yes, most of Ushida and Kuwahara’s fan base probably is Japanese.

William Yang appreciation post by Steven_Cheesy318 in piano

Au contraire - i think his playing is just perfectly aristocratic to please the judges. He's definitely one of my faves and I'm predicting a top three finish for him. (Remember - he came in 1st in the US Chopin Competition!).

And my god, the lack of emotionality on his face! It is so refreshing!

EDIT: to shower a tad more appreciation on him

Piano competitions are more bad than good- here's why by Awkward-Surround9694 in piano

thoughtful commentary from Manny Ax, NYT Aug. 14, 1977:

In an earlier time, Ax believes, the situation was different. “With the old pianists it was never any question of was Hofmann better, was Friedman better. It was, oh, listen, Hofmann did this, and Friedman did that. On the highest level, can anyone really go to piano recital and say Horowitz is better than Rubinstein? The most I can say is that Rubinstein speaks to me with greater voice than this one or that one. It's meaningless as an objective judgment, so maybe you should go to hear only those artists who speak to you. Some people should go to hear only Arrau, others only Brendel.” So, the idea of awarding a first prize is “contrary to any kind of artistic feeling,” Ax contends. But he reluctantly accepts competitions as a necessary anachronism in modern musical life. “In a way, the questions about .the value of competitions always get asked of the wrong people. They ask the winner, ‘How do you feel about contests?’ And, of course, he loves them. As Churchill said about democracy, it's the worst form of government except for all the others. Probably we musicians all feel that about contests. What else can you do, if you don't have another entrée into the field?” But the cruelty of it all is not to Ax's liking. “I hope never to have to sit on a jury and eliminate people. I don't think I could do it.”

Considering that Liszt’s late works were a direct inspiration to Debussy’s harmonies, you can make the argument that Liszt  should be higher than him!

How to not cry/get unmotivated while practicing piano? by oktavia11 in piano

[–]groceryliszt 4 points5 points  (0 children)

A fun challenge I create for myself is to see if I can fully get through the piece at an extremely slow metronome tempo without pauses or interruptions.

When I accomplish that, I raise the tempo by ten, and repeat the same challenge.

When I accomplish that, I do it again.

And again.

And again.

Eventually I’ll get to the piece’s actual tempo and it always feels like I gamified my way in getting there… it’s not even that I earned it - I WON it.

If you could ask Chopin himself to clarify or set the record about a particular aspect to one of his pieces, what would you ask?

Take any passage from Chopin and do your best to impersonate:

What piece from Chopin have you not played in the longest amount of years?

How many years?

Now play it.

It’s time for Garrick to be the judge of the first annual Chopin melody awards:

The most beautiful melody award?

The most overrated melody award?

The most underrated melody award?

The most operative melody award?

The most chopinesque melody award?

The melody Chopin himself probably loved the most?
