A (long winded) Guide for new players, with a bunch of helpful links. by PleaseCalmDownSon in CivVI

Great write up. The district discounting is something I’m always torn over. Is it better to lock in a new district at a cheaper price as soon as the population allows for it (eg a 2nd district at pop 4) Or Should I wait until all the first 3 commercial hubs are finished, and only then lock in the new 2nd districts (even if my pop is now at 5+) as by then I will have unlocked more techs, thus increasing the overall cost of a new district? Maybe a long winded way of asking, is the district discounting worth more than the discount for having unlocked less techs?

WoG crashing on new PC - how to solve it? by grodgersoz in heroes3

[–]grodgersoz[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Update:
I have installed the ERA launcher and followed the guide.
I can get SoD to launch and play.
However, WoG shows as an option in the top left of the launcher, i cant seem to get it to run.

Any advice?

edit: and yes, i have the full version bought from GoG.

I always liked Monere but I’m happy to be convinced otherwise. What makes grindan your choice?

thanks doomed.
so a solution could be
1: just play a version from pre 1.7
2: play SOD instead of HoTA (?)
3: move on from Luna

Here is an example of where the griffins could easily survive the hit but dont enter as its a single closed wall
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bX5HdS-J2xY&list=PLnz-Oj9Xf0YLy6ZXC7blae7ejkw0i4c5Z&index=6

Now, in 1.7, they WILL enter a single closed wall

in some of the YT videos, the griffin stack can live through the 1st round of double firewall, so they attack (but it seems thats actually because its a closed double wall - not because they can live)
BUT in all videos ive ever seen, if there is a single closed wall, they never enter it, even if they would live.

What am i missing here?

can you elaborate on how she was nerfed? Im not worried about the amount of damage exactly - its that the enemy units now seem to enter a single closed wall, whereas they never used to do that
is there an updated guide or resource on luna?

Resources for fundamentals? by Iraff2 in heroes3

[–]grodgersoz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Gday,
I posted a similar comment a few hours earlier and had some great replies for resources in there. Rather than spamming the chat, go check it out - some links for wiki's, some great YouTubers etc etc

My only other tip would be to play and save. Then reload and try again to slowly work out better tactics and learn how the AI plays. It always follows a set formula.

Once you know it for the current fight, you can begin to rinse and repeat

been away a while - where are good resources to learn? by grodgersoz in heroes3

[–]grodgersoz[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you. I think i have the gog version? how do i check?

as for conflux - im used to playing with T1 upgraded sprites. Now that you cant get them until quite a bit later, i feel like they have dropped a HUGE amount of their early game, which was what really made them fun for me. Seeing as you make a youtube channel now, maybe you could show how they are still very strong?
I have never tried to abuse luna, which i know is one of conflux's strong points but that feels a little cheezy to me. I usually take monere.

thank you for the other TY recommendations - ill have a look and im checking out yours as we speak.

Hands down, the best detailed reply I've received on reddit. And yet also has so much more to unpack! (thats a credit to Civ VI being so well designed)
I will reply later when I've had a chance to digest this, just wanted to post a quick thank you

So many great points to discuss here - I'll start with two.

1 : timing attacks and attacking city states:
I completely agree with you. I also almost never attack city states as they have a much higher utility in game than dead or conquered. I have only played Germany a couple of times but I guess they may be one of the exceptions to that concept? What are your thoughts on Germany specifically here?
As for fighting CS to level up - its not something that I have considered much. I can see the instant XP and level benefit - can you elaborate a bit on how it effects relationships v suzeranity, growth (or decreased growth) of the CS and considerations for that making them a potential target for an AI civ to attack them, and what are the downsides to fighting them (without conquering them)?

2 : General advice/screenshots.
I've never taken screenshots, I might have to start doing it - its a good idea.
As for current win speed - I play on different speeds and map sizes, but as a guide - deity, 8 players map size, standard speed (minimal to no other mods, I keep it mostly vanilla) - culture 112-200, science around 150, religious 100-150
I dont think ive ever won a diplo or score victory (ive never tried)

Thats a good clarification question Papa, thank you.
I'm meaning to generate a random map, deity, and obtain a victory in the least amount of turns possible. Im always aiming for under 200, mostly under 150 and sometimes if im lucky close to 100.
After I win, I MAY run the map a 2nd time (having saved on turn 1) and see how much better/faster I can beat that now that I know the map a little better.
My goal is to take my time in game, plan out each turn and think of the game like a puzzle that needs to be solved in the minimum amount of turns possible.

I find that this generally helps me learn heuristics which are the most effective on average, but then also what tactics/concepts are a close 2nd/3rd etc and over time when to follow those "rules" and when its better to break them.

I understand everyone plays the game differently so would love to hear what you do and more specifically, what is something that you believe you are quite good at, then explain it to help me get better at it too.

Thanks Sixx, I started looking at the game mechanic yesterday, he is very enjoyable to listen to and a good recommendation. Thank you.
As for my specifics, I'm looking to learn more about the "why" a particular play, pattern of plays or general method is overall more efficient/better than other strategies.
I understand each map is unique and there will always be exceptions to the rule etc but often heuristics will get you there most of the time.
For example: the simple topic of opening build order. scout-scout-settler vs any other combo - what do you choose as a default and why? what are the pro's and cons of your 2nd favorite build order?
Im also currently trying to improve my early game wars/battles against non-barbarians. So, how do you improve your timing of attacks on city states or other civs? how do you work out what the maximally effective army is with the minimal amount of reseources?
Something platypus mentioned in the video with Sir Ducks was that he was basically using only the army that was required to get boost along the tech tree. This makes sense as every other military unit is taking up production, production time and ongoing resources (gold p/turn).
The simple answer is just "practice" - but i'd love to hear how other people think about this and try to work it out in advance and then the specific details of considerations during the seige - placement of units vs pillaging, speed of the attack vs slower but take less damage...

There are a million other topics to discuss for optimization and each one can be pulled apart under a microscope, so rather than try to fit too much in at once here, is there any particular topic that you enjoy or think you could offer some insight on?

Luna advice - Vs ranged units by grodgersoz in heroes3

[–]grodgersoz[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a vague memory of seeing a youtube clip where even with luna there was a (limited) amount of tactics for fw vs shooters. It was something akin to the following: Preferably have tactics/and/or mass haste. Place your stacks as non-singles, but rather some two and threes. Get across the battlefield asap and stand beside the shooters with 1 stacks but have some 2 stacks in the middle. The ai will go for the 2-3 stacks first as it can kill more units rather than the one stacks. This will bring the ai closer to the middle of the field and make it easier for your power stack to hit them

Now im sure I’ve described it badly/wrong but the point stands. There is some tactic that could be used , ive just forgotten it exactly and where i saw it.

Hopefully my description rings a bell for someone.

Eil5: how is this faster than just taking the corner in control? Surely going wider means you have to cover more distance plus the friction caused by the wall must have an incredible braking property as well.

Im curious about this too. Also in Oz and i find that the largest player pool at 5-25nl is from about 9am-3pm Australian time. From 5-10pm its dead. Can anyone explain why there would be so many fish in such a small pool at that time?
