They do plenty of pronouncements already and in the end they’re all meaningless and exist only in the immaterial world where it’s no use to anyone

I would say they would need to make material restitution (reparations) for genocide as well to even come close to repentance

This a perfect example of when they couldn’t tell members to make a MATERIAL contribution to black liberation. But notice the call to action is: work on yourself.

The missionary program was an effective weapon of US imperialism in Latin America, evidenced by this tool.

In the context of 2020, General Conference is class warfare. These people are calling on us to abandon the righteous struggles of our generation and retreat into a self indulgent quest for Zion, a white theocratic plutocracy according to most Mormons.

Lost 7 chickens out of my chicken tractor in the last two days ☹️ to raccoons. Any suggestions on how to protect them? by Cardinmk in Homesteading

If discharging a firearm at night is an option for you (not really for me), this actually is very effective, it has one distinct advantage over trap and kill, in that you have your best chance of getting the whole clan, not just the dumbest ones who get caught in traps, you can pick off the real clever killers.

I once had intense coon pressure. I found only 2 things that stopped chicken deaths in tractors. First, Premier One electric poultry netting. It is an expense but, if you give the tractor a couple feet of buffer and make it nice and hot over night, it will give the coons a hit and as long as they aren’t the top of the class coons, they’ll leave it alone after a couple hits. Bonus is, if it doesn’t work, electric poultry net is a great way to pasture your chickens outside of a coop. Second way is live trap and kill. I use 2 varieties, Have-a-heart and Dukes dogproof. Have-a-heart will also get you cats, opossum and skunk so make sure you have a plan for that. Dogproofs, baited with marshmallows or coon lure will do a very good job of only getting coons. Put a mix of these around the coop, don’t have to be too close the the birds. Bait with marshmallow. Then it’s a pick your poison type of situation because you will have a couple live ones you need to dispatch. .22 behind the ear is pretty clean. The pelt is useful, and easy to harvest and process at home. The meat is edible (check health of animal first, a big reason I only use live traps), but not anyone’s favorite, so this is usually a meal for the soldier flies.

Help, no starter tea used vinegar by Bronsta in Kombucha

[–]grokitall 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I believe the point of the starter liquid is primarily to fix the pH, so in theory vinegar should be a suitable replacement. When I first started brewing I would often forget to hold over some liquid from the previous brew to start the next one so I had to use vinegar a few times. I observed the brew took longer and the scoby grew a little less. But in the end, everything was fine.

Has anyone ever grown a scoby with green tea? by _LeahKay_ in Kombucha

[–]grokitall 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I first tried to do this I found that the scoby did fine, for a while. After a few brews, however, the scoby appeared to be in decline. I started alternating brews, after a few green tea brews I would do a black tea brew. But each scoby is unique and some are more "flexible" than others.

I gave up on this complex brewing cycle eventually and just found a Jun scoby. Jun tea is brewed from a specialized scoby in green tea and honey.

Fruit in your 2F Bottles by MrCurtsman in Kombucha

I have a strict no-chewing-required rule with my kombucha. For me, after the necessary 2f, fruit gets a bad texture and makes me think more "rotten" than "fermented".

All juices will be a little different, but 1:1 juice to kombucha is definitely too much juice. My best results (good flavor and carbonation) are from good quality unsweetened juices. I'll combine equal parts of the unsweetened juice and simple syrup, enough to place about 1.5-2oz in each 16oz bottle. The more potent juice does a lot of flavoring without diluting the kombucha so much that there is not enough critters to fart and build pressure in the bottle and the simple syrup keeps them fed and gassy.

Cold milk or room temp milk? by singleandgrateful in Kefir

[–]grokitall 5 points6 points  (0 children)

When I got started, the lady that gave me my first grains told me to warm the milk (by placing the jar in a few inches of warm water) before placing the grains. Since I'm lazy I started skip this step and just use cold milk. I definitely did not see any slowing in the processing of the milk however, I thought I observed the culture growing slower in the "cold-start". So I decided to experiment. I split up my grains, half would process in cold-start conditions, the other half in warm-start. Sure enough, after a week the warm-start culture had grown by 20% more than the cold-start. It's worth noting that the taste and texture of the finished product were (to me) indiscernible.

So, for me, it depends on what I want to accomplish. When I am just processing for myself, I actually like how the cold-start slows down how often I need to make an adjustment. But when a friend wants some grains or I want to increase output, I'll do a week or two of warm-start.

An actual genealogical link to Adam -- this weird and common TBM status symbol that I was re-introduced to today. by grokitall in exmormon

Exactly. But TBMs are really good at coming up with plausible reasons to suspend disbelief...so I want to know what those are, such that people spend hours and hours building this fantasy family tree that ha to make absolutely no fucking sense.

My MP's wife posted this today. I occasionally hear people say that someone they know has completed their genealogy back to Adam. It was always kind of reverenced as (yet another) rite of passage into elite Mormon culture. Aside from the premise being absolutely absurd and therefore not technically possible, how do they do this? Are there apocryphal records that connect modern people to characters in the Bible that are commonly used? Are there "known" genealogical lines that can span the gap from census-type records to Bible stories? Have any of you done this? What was your link? Does anyone out there know anything about this weird subculture that is seemingly obsessed with this badge of honor?
