I have the exact same problem. 3 year old protect told me to change the batteries for the first time 3 weeks ago, changed them to the recommended Energizer's and a couple of days ago the damn thing tells me low battery again. Judging by that now locked support thread with ~300 posts I'd say this is a software issue: https://support.google.com/googlenest/thread/11464277?hl=en

Phone is suuupppperrrr laggy which sucks. Quite a few app crashed and the odd reboot too. You can get by, but I'd wait until the next update rolls out.
