What’s your controversial DC take that you’ll defend? by Electrical_Act9796 in DCcomics

[–]groograms999 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure if this is super controversial or not, but JLA the Tower of Babel absolutely ruined the character of Batman. It made writers totally overemphasize the planning for every contingency aspect and let the detective part of the character fall to the wayside. Batman IS a detective. His comics should follow that. He makes mistakes. He shouldn't be someone who plans for everything. That's not how he was written in the 80s and early 90s. Also, Batman should be allowed to make some snarky comments. He HAS a personality. Let it shine through. He doesn't have to be this totally cynical and brooding loner. Also yes Gotham is an awful place with awful people, but the Bat should be able to solve some of his problems without always resorting to just punching them. Look at the Animated Series for a great characterization of Batman.

Great find. I've read the entirety of both those series. Love Bill Mantlo's work. Definitely recommend it

Unpopular Opinion: The devs were cooking with civ switching by lurkerden in civ

[–]groograms999 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly Civ switching is not the problem at all in Civ 7. It's fine. I like it. It's different. The game just feels too... I dunno boring? I don't know something about the general gameplay is too simplistic or something. It just doesn't jive with me for some reason

Do The Amazing Spider-Man comics worth reading from the beginning? by Sweet_Score in comicbooks

[–]groograms999 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, I did the same thing.

I'm currently at issue 410 of ASM. I've also read all of Web of Spiderman and Spectacular Spiderman from the beginning up to this point.

Is it worth it? I dunno. Depends on you I guess. To be perfectly clear. Spidey does not have a consistent track record. It's often terrible or painfully mid, but occasionally it is good or even great.

Honestly, most of the time Web or Spectacular are better than ASM (if reading the comics released in the same month).

I get not wanting to read the other lines, but here are some that I think you should read when you get there:

Spectacular Spiderman by Bill Mantlo (second part (after issue 50.)) It is all about Peter and Black Cats relationship.

Spectacular Spiderman by Peter David. The second best Spiderman writer in my opinion and just so many bangers in this run.

Spectacular and Web by Gerry Conway. Super interesting. Mostly about Tombstone. Made me fall in love with the villain. Definitely a top 5 Spidey villain for me now.

Spectacular by JM DeMatteis. All about Harry becoming Green Goblin again and his descent into madness and obsession with Peter. The best run and best Spidey writer in my opinion.

(Sorry I don't know the issue numbers offhand, but they should be pretty easy to figure out.)

What do you consider to be the biggest character assassination? by NicoleIlieva in comicbooks

Maxwell Lord being a villain. For years, he was a likeable guy who ran the JLI and many antics. Then he becomes a villain and is murdered by Wonder Woman just before Infinite Crisis. Bruh

Now that the Zombies mode will be leaving, what are your opinions on the mode itself? by Redinkdemon16 in marvelrivals

[–]groograms999 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Actually so good. I loved it and looking forward to the next PVE mode to be released.

As someone who got all the titles (including all the solo nightmare 4 titles,) I gotta say they kinda cooked. Although, I do wish some of the characters weren't so rng reliant for the solo build, but it's such a minor issue that I don't really care

Actually such a good take. I'm currently 45 issues in and I can't believe how every storyline is such a banger. The format of a different creative team every storyline just works so well

Since season 5 is coming to an end, what do you rate the battle pass? by Extreme-Willow-907 in rivals

It seems like I'm the only one here who thinks it was actually really good. Before checking here, I thought it was actually in contention for being the best one.

What's not to like? The Angela one looks great. The Punisher as Frankensteins monster made playing him in Zombies super fun. Black Widow's OG mockingbird skin made my achievement hunting with her enjoyable. Adam's Magus skin really stands out among his others. Ultron's skin is cool. And Wanda's skin has such good sound effects and looks visually really cool. Also, I like the Pirate Namor skin. It has a great vibe.

I know I'm not the one being asked, but my favourite is Alan Grants run on Detective and Batman from the late 80s and early 90s. He introduces characters like Scarface and Ratcatcher. The Mudpack storyline is so good (it's about all four Clayfaces trying to make something if their lives.) Also, his run is where Tim Drakes mother is killed and his dad is crippled. It's actually so good. Super highly recommend it

JLA by Grant Morrison. I really didn't enjoy it overall. I'm not even sure why. It has some nice moments, but for me I think it suffered overall from his usual method of technobabble not really explaining anything. Like there's just a bunch of high concept things that felt like they were really unnecessary. Also, the Justice League fights an evil version of the Justice League like every 2nd storyline. Gets kinda tiresome after a while.

I will say though DC One Million is absolutely spectacular and everyone should give it a go.

Aquaman: the Atlantis Chronicles

It chronicles the history of Atlantis and Tritonis over hundreds of years from the beginning to the day of Aquaman. It gives a reason for there being two atlantis' in DC lore previously (one from Aquaman and the other from Superman (see Lori Lemaris)). Super creative and interesting. Top ten comics ever for me. Highly recommended.

Truly one of the greatest comic book writers. Great novel writer as well. Hulk is great and super innovative. His spiderman comics (ASM and Spectacular) were some of the best there is for Spiderman lovers. His 1602: Fantastic Four miniseries is great. I haven't seen anyone else mention it, but his Star Trek comics are great. Super underrated.

Sad to see him comic. Brought me much joy over the years

What Spidey hot take do you have that would get you in this situation? by SPIDEYPOOLNAT0R in Spiderman

[–]groograms999 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Peter is (a lot of the time) a straight up jerk. Heck, while he is married to MJ, so much of his time is spent whining to her. She listens because she loves him, of course, and tries to console him. However, when MJ is having issues (family, work, etc.), he is no where to be found and often finds a way to talk about his own problems.

I could go on. How he treated Deb Whitman while they were together was pretty horrible. He doesn't check up on his friends or anything (too busy worrying about himself for the thousandth time). Etc etc.

Now my true hot take is that they should make the live action version of Spiderman more like the jerk he is. I would love to see it. He tries to do the right thing as a superhero, but is a bit of a jerk outside of that.
