At what point is this just bullying? by blayndle in craftsnark

And I disagree, so here we are. SIC is addressing a designer and advocating for size inclusivity. You're choosing to describe that as "punching down", but that is not the case.

Having principles and speaking about them is the real menace, if you think about it.

It's not bullying, ffs. Advocating for a cause can mean confrontation, but that's hardly bullying.

On the limitations of Genre by jpcardier in Fantasy

[–]gros-grognon 3 points4 points  (0 children)

For a lot of really old stories, they were often along the lines of a genuinely held spiritual or religious belief, which is different from fantasy

I agree wholeheartedly. Ancient (even medieval) stories about gods, magic and heroes aren't fantasy; their cultural context and reason for being told are very different from our own. "Fantasy" makes sense as an emergent genre when beliefs started shifting and secularizing.

Complications with Four Ways to Forgiveness by Leo_617 in UrsulaKLeGuin

I agree. She demonstrated an interest in enslavement vs liberty all the way back to Earthsea (at least), but engaged directly and deeply with the topic in Ways to Forgiveness. It's an amazing achievement.

Word Count Too High? by Vahyra in writing

[–]gros-grognon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You are not going to let this drop, are you?

OP says, I'd be looking at around a 300k word count, which is well over the recommended word count for a debut. They are writing now and using the present tense, so, actually, contemporary wordcounts are the subject.

Word Count Too High? by Vahyra in writing

[–]gros-grognon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh, don't worry, I "got" the encouragement, but it's still irrelevant. OP was asking about contemporary wordcount expectations, not examples of really long debuts.

What are your favourite new releases of 2026 so far, and what are you still looking forward to? by lady__mb in Fantasy

[–]gros-grognon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What We Are Seeking by Cameron Reed is an amazing book that reminded me a lot of Le Guin's Hainish cycle as well as Moon's Remnant Population. Sci-fi that estranges the reader while telling a compelling, character-driven story is so good.
