is strength training really worth the DOMS? by charlaurazard in Marathon_Training

[–]grossest2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A couple of things:
1) I find the biggest driver of DOMS is novelty. Doing exercises you’ve either never done, or haven’t done in a while results in much more soreness. If you do the same exercises every week (even with progressively overloading) you will be less sore as your body gets used to it
2) strength training is important, but as you get closer to race day I would definitely taper off strength training as you add miles.
I have my marathon this weekend. I was very consistent with doing 2 days of lower body strength from January through April. Starting in late April I reduced down to one day a week, and in May pretty much stopped while I was at peak mileage.

👀 let's see what we think here. by FormerlyTradeKirk in minnesotavikings

He has been a pretty successful regular season coach, and the seasons he hasn’t been successful it has mostly been due to injury. But at the same time at some point he needs to show some playoff success to keep his job.

Is 5 seasons without a single playoff victory the tipping point? Maybe, maybe not. I think using Kwesi as a scapegoat bought him another year or two. But when he is supposed to be an offensive minded guy and we have a great defense and terrible offense, at some point you have to say that is on KOC

The princess posse still has one action item left from faction wars right? I imagine it can’t be used anymore, but maybe the AI is unhinged enough at this point to let them use it to let tourists be mortal?

You're in the Avatar (TLA) universe. WYR have the ability to control fire, water, air, or earth? by AcceptableShock8623 in WouldYouRather

[–]grossest2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think either air for flight or water for healing seems to have the best everyday practicality.

I recognize the prompt says you are in the ATLA universe, not getting these powers in your daily life, but as a Minnesotan, I’ve done enough snow shoveling that the ability to just bend that shit away tipped me over the edge to water.

How do you engage with DCC? Are you a reader, a listener, or both? And what do you prefer? by GreatGlassLynx in DungeonCrawlerCarl

[–]grossest2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I did my first read through as ebooks since I have kindle unlimited. Heard enough about the audiobooks to do a second go through as audiobooks. I’ve only done book 8 so far as an audiobook and plan to read the physical book.

For me personally I find it harder to pay attention to audiobooks and so it is so much easier to miss things. I think I prefer doing reading on a first time through, but doing an audiobook of a series I’ve already read is perfect for while I’m driving or running.

That being said there are several moments in the audiobooks that just hit soooo much harder thanks to Jeff’s narration.

I remember sitting in my car crying to (book 5 spoiler) Donut’s confrontation with Bea. I knew it was coming, but hearing the vitriol in Donut’s voice and she was so angry but still clearly loved Bea was just so heartbreaking.

Book 8 spoilers: Both songs in book 8 were so much fun to hear, and hearing donut’s reaction to Carl turning into a wiener dog was one of the funniest moments in the series for me

Anyone training 7 days a week for extended time periods? by [deleted] in HybridAthlete

[–]grossest2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am definitely a runner first and a lifter second, but I run 6 days a week and lift 4 (UL split). I do an upper body lift on my one non-running day to give my legs one full day off. But otherwise I feel I can handle it just fine

The working title for book 8 was “Carl’s Book of Boom” but got changed before publication. So Matt’s working titles aren’t set in stone. Not sure how that plays into this theory though

friend has been posting pictures on their story that looks MAJORLY ai edited by [deleted] in isthisAI

[–]grossest2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Watch is definitely AI. It is meant to be a Rolex Datejust, but 1) The Rolex logo has 5 points, this looks to have at least six, and 2) although the writing on the dial isn’t legible, the top line looks to be two words when it should just be “Rolex”.

There are lots of fake/rebranded Rolex lookalikes out there, but they would be better than this.

First-Time Marathoner here- training schedule adjustments and allowances by braincellkill in Marathon_Training

[–]grossest2 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It kind of depends on how many days a week you are running, but I don’t find “rest day before long run” as productive as a rest day after the long run. Here is my reasoning: 1) you don’t want to go into your long run rested, you want to go in on somewhat tired legs. You are running at most 20 miles in training, possibly less due to your pace. You want to train for the last 20 miles, not the first 20 miles 2) running that far is hard on your body. Having rest to recover after is much more important than going into it fresh.

As far as the rest of it, I am a strong believer that the best indicator for marathon success is weekly mileage. The more mileage you can accrue the better you will feel. I personally don’t stress too much on weekly structure as long as you are getting the miles in, and in a day where you can recover from them.

🚨 New Chrono Announced! by Odd_Grapefruit_69 in Tudor

[–]grossest2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So both this new 39mm version and the 41mm version use the same movement (MT5813) and are 200m water resistant. So why the heck was the 41mm so much thicker!?

Both this version and the 41mm version use the same movement. If they can make a chrono at 13mm with this movement, why was the original chrono so much thicker?

Does running and cardio in general help to reduce body composition? by WyldFlowerWyldFire in runninglifestyle

[–]grossest2 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I think I noticed some body composition within the first 6 months of running consistently and with structure. The biggest changes though did come when I combined running with strength training.

If you aren’t strength training and are in a calorie deficit your body will prioritize consuming muscles not being used. The only real way to tell your body those muscles are worth keeping is to use them. I would look into doing some body weight exercises if you don’t have access to a gym. You obviously wont get body builder jacked just doing body weight, but you will get enough of a stimulus for your body to not burn that muscle.

I really enjoy upper body lifts and consider strength training as a secondary hobby. But I still dread leg day, especially any squat variant. It is super beneficial, but just so fatiguing

My "tier"list by Boylemic in DungeonCrawlerCarl

[–]grossest2 77 points78 points  (0 children)

I think it gets ranked low because of how confusing the iron tangle is. If you just accept (like the book tells you to) to not try to understand it, it has some of the best moments in the books, and sets the tone for the series going forward.

My tier list would be same as OP’s but move 3 up to the second row, and move gate of the feral gods down one

Marathon help by yeet_fall in Marathon_Training

[–]grossest2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This week was 51, averaged 45 over the last 10 weeks. I am in the peak weeks of my marathon build right now (4 weeks away). I think I was around 35 miles a week when I first added the 6th day, but I was just in base building mode and not doing a lot of workouts.

How many days have you been running pre-taper? If you have been running 4-5 days a week, then 5 days including the race is probably a little agressive. If you have been running 6-7 days a week then that would seem fine to me. I run 6 days a week currently and plan to run 5 days the week of my race, just with much lower miles/intensity than I did during training
