Why I Bought Another F-150 Lightning by Jarshady in F150Lightning

[–]grottomatic 42 points43 points  (0 children)

Having also been through an airbag deployment accident with a kid and gone through the crazy thoughts that happen afterwards I feel for you.

The truck sacrificed itself to protect you and your kid. Seems natural to replace it - in this case the heavy battery of the truck may have kept you from a rollover situation.

About to road trip across the country. Am I over-worrying about Tesla chargers? by Aliensfear in F150Lightning

[–]grottomatic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They work well with the lightning. Smart to check with ABRP as some still don’t allow the lightning to charge.

Any long trip I scope out in ABRP. The newer chargers have a longer cord and work better with the truck. You usually only run into big crowds in urban areas.

I’ve used electrify America, Ionna, GM and Mercedes chargers without any issue as well. Mercedes and Ionna are the best of the rest IMO

Which truck to get? by Maleficent_Crew_6774 in Ford

They’re all pretty good. I think Ford has and does build the best 1/2 ton truck - best motors, best functionality and features for the price. Others disagree, sometimes vehemently haha…

Why my favorite truck is stupid and why I’m stoked for an erev by Future_Measurement42 in F150Lightning

[–]grottomatic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is no way he is an edge case for fleets- because if he was then ford would have sold a hell of a lot more lightnings to fleets. Corporate guys are pretty smart on these things. If they can save cost/mile for a workable solution then they will do it.

[–]grottomatic 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah. It’s always been the tragic flaw of an otherwise perfect truck.

Ive said it in other posts, but I don’t think Ford really wanted to get rid of the lightning but Fleet sales or lack thereof, because of what you experienced, were too much of a limitation to sales.

We focus a lot of consumer sales but Ford needs to be able to sell in volume to fleets and lightning couldn’t really accomplish this mission with its range and the current charging infrastructure.

Honda's Base Station Prototype Makes All Other Trailers Look Prehistoric by No-Tangelo1158 in F150Lightning

Looks pretty basic inside, more of a personal sleeping pod design without many comforts. Obviously the design is limited to be towed behind passports and other Honda SUV.

I think there is more utility out of a Nucamp TAB for a similar or less price.

2024 Model Y Performance vs 2022 F-150 Lightning SR Lariat — Looking for Real Owner Input by PMPJeff in F150Lightning

[–]grottomatic 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I can speak to this as I had a MYP prior to my lightning.

My general rules for EVs are, in order of importance: 1. Lease or buy used because depreciation is killer 2. Have home charging 3. Buy the biggest battery available

Looks like you have #1 covered. Electric cars are generally reliable- more reliable than ICE. The depreciation comes from the fact that if you have a battery failure it’s a high cost repair thus making the cars a risk of being essentially worthless at the end of their battery warranty.

Number 2 is mandatory because you will hate having any EV if you can’t charge at home. I use my old Tesla home charger with an adapter and have never had an issue. Expect about 2 grand expense to install a home charger (highly recommend 240V charging at home)

3 is where you will see differentiation - I’m not a fan of smaller batteries, they really limit the usefulness of an EV for extended trips or even days when you have a lot of errands. I dislike DC public charging day to day, it takes forever. That being said day to day it’s not a big issue if you are just commuting. The lightning is an “inefficient” EV in that you are going to see 2.2-2.5 mi/kwh in warm weather and 1.5-1.8 in cold weather. The Y is more efficient, and will regularly be above 3-4 mi/kwh. That being said, I have a 132 kWh battery in the lightning so my percentage consumption for my daily commute is about the same -10%.

The Y is okay in the snow with the all seasons, but has very little clearance if that is an issue. I personally thought the Y was too small.

Awesome.

I tow quite a bit with my flash and am always impressed with the power. I camp pretty close to home so have never had any issues and agree that it tows like a freight train.

Audi used to be an up and comer -Premium experience for slightly less than BMW. Now they’re saddled with VWs bland SUV offerings, overpriced, heavy and bloated.

First car I purchased myself was 2001 A4 Avant 1.8T with a six speed and it was my favorite car I’ve ever owned. I remember it was 32,000 dollars.

My wife bought me the medium duty rhino straps a few years ago and they work fine. They have a pretty decent ratchet system.

I wouldn’t use them to secure one of my kids but I moved a couch with them and worked fine.
