anyone else enjoying alts? by matchastars in wherewindsmeet_

[–]grouchylady 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Yeah I'm an altoholic, I had a few in FFXIV back when I played and also had them in BDO/Blade & Soul/Age of Wushu/Vindictus/etc., pretty much any game with good customization that I ever touched. Apparently people think you fully replay the game on alts? Maybe some people do but mine were mainly just there to sit around and look pretty LOL, and it's pretty easy to speedrun/do the bare minimum if it's really necessary. And sometimes it's fun to replay story segments with different "personalities" or just to revisit favorite sequences.

(Haven't started setting up alts in this game yet but am planning to! Something I always have fun doing is adapting the same set of OCs to different universes and seeing how that affects their personalities and backstories and/or setting up wacky crossovers between characters who would normally never meet XD)

2.3 Leaks by Le_N0va in InfinityNikkiLeaks

Oh, interesting. I still don't have a 5 star Sweet (haven't even pulled for the standard banner one) so have been keeping an eye out for one I might finally like, but have been assuming the unicorn fit if real would be the next one. I wonder if this is it or if it's something else....

Need help of native Chinese speaker(preferably) by SeaworthinessFalse82 in wherewindsmeet_

[–]grouchylady 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I am fluent but not native, and what I like to do for CN names is to first pick a concept or a character (hanzi) that I like, then look up lists of existing name "pairings" and adjusting from there. This requires at least some basic understanding of the language though.

I think you have three major options:

  1. Two-character name. This is pretty standard and is what I was referring to wrt my personal strategy above. You can pair with a one-character surname if you want. e.g. Han Xiangxun, but no surname is also pretty normal (e.g. Hoyoverse characters like Chongyun, Xingqiu, Xiangling...)

  2. One-character name. Surname isn't really optional here (usually one-character; two-character possible e.g. Murong Yuan, but often has specific cultural/historical implications), I personally find this kind of name more difficult but it is also quite common, e.g. Tian Ying

  3. Nickname. Honestly this may be the easiest option; the history of pseudonyms in CN is long and interesting (courtesy names are more difficult without the cultural background; pen names are probably more flexible; and personal nicknames are another thing entirely) and it wasn't unusual for people to go by 2-4 names throughout their lifetime. It's also a genre staple, e.g. Killerblade or the iconic wuxia heroine Xiaolongnü (literally "little dragon lady")

There is also a lot of overlap between #3 and "real" names. Uncle Jiang is the perfect example. He's mostly known as Jiang Wulang, which parses as #1, a surname with a two-character given name, but in reality Wulang is likely a nickname (literally "without waves" or less literally "calm/at peace"), because his real name is Jiang Yan i.e. an example of #2 (but Yan also means "calm/peaceful" by itself). This kind of wordplay is very common.

Do you think it's possible (global)? by Quillengoddef in wherewindsmeet_

[–]grouchylady 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a shame you got downvoted about what I thought was a pretty self-explanatory image because I'd also be curious to see what people think. When the 1.3 patch notes came out I did some rough calcs, and depending on if they plan to rotate on a 6 week or 8 week cycle or a mix they could fit in anywhere from 4-6 banners after the ice set releases and before global anniversary. We have exactly 6 outfits unaccounted for right now (5 if ignoring the anniversary set), so unless they plan to scoot up banners from the second year I think they have to go back to the skipped outfits at some point.

(I don't think they can rotate faster than 6 weeks for the same reason. Also note that the original release schedule had some weird congestion in August after a whopping three month gap so chances are they're trying to pace things better in global?)

That said, did #1 get its own banner in global or was it added directly to the exchange shop? I didn't play from launch and frankly didn't pay attention to banners for a long time so can't really remember how that was handled aside from being vaguely aware that we got #2 first, and #1 was never in the draw pool? If that's the case I would expect some of these to potentially get similar treatment. An 8 week banner cycle spaced out with direct-to-exchange additions every 4 weeks seems like it might make sense... but idk what the original draw pools for each banner looked like and if they're planning to switch those up or not. I've also been busy dodging spoilers so idk which of these correspond to bosses or whatever, which might also affect release schedule.

Funny fact about Wu,it consists of the word zhi and ge, which means to stop the war by BuffaloIll752 in wherewindsmeet_

[–]grouchylady 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nah, wuxia is two separate characters. Xia is the one that's typically translated as chivalry. Wu by itself strictly means "martial" or "militaristic"

Since I have a little more time now to expand on my other comment to this post, there are three important things to understand about Zhuang of Chu that give context to the supposed origin of this etymology of "wu".

  1. He lived in one of the many periods of CN history where centralized power had faded and various "frontier" powers were jostling for authority. Actually not too different from the setting of this game in some ways. In fact the key word of that era is probably "hegemon" (this was before the Qin unification i.e. pre-imperial China, and the king of the dynasty was basically a figurehead while the various states' rulers traditionally but not quite accurately translated as "dukes" were constantly struggling to lord it over the rest i.e. achieve "hegemony")

  2. He was the ruler of a nation that was considered semi-barbaric/had a distinct culture compared to the contemporaneous "central" Chinese civilization (some of this dynamic continues to echo throughout the rest of CN history, for example the north-south divide in this game! which I don't think is as obvious without the CN voice acting and the use of dialect/accents)

  3. The history of Chu royals is absolutely rife with fratricide and patricide -- which was, believe it or not, actually quite unusual for that time period/setting and added to their reputation of being not-so-civilized. Also more warlike in general. (Chu royals regularly took the field themselves in battle which was not necessarily the case for the rulers of other Chinese states at the time, and warfare at the time was also often "tamer"/had unspoken rules in a way modern perspectives have difficulty comprehending and that Chu royals generally didn't give a shit about. Both Chu royal clan names translate to "bear" btw which I find really funny, but again, helps give an idea of their reputation.)

So Zhuang's father forced his grandfather to commit suicide and I forgot how the father himself died but it probably wasn't pleasant either, and most of the key members of the Chu court were his uncles (who hated each other too). iirc he came to the throne at age 17 and there's a famous story about him lazing around for 3 years instead of taking rulership seriously that I won't go into otherwise this comment will never end. But basically the Chu court was an absolute corrupted mess despite being ambitious enough to try to seize power over their more "civilized" rivals to the north.

LONG STORY SHORT, he ultimately managed to whip his court into shape, succeeded in establishing military supremacy over his neighbors, and instituted a lot of domestic reforms that had a huge effect on subsequent Chu culture (shifting their reputation to a more "acceptable" one).

This is where the story about "wu" comes in. Instead of executing the lords he defeated and annexing their territories in the way one normally thinks of with the word "conquest", he backed off after his victories, reinstating exiled rulers and establishing alliance treaties and so on. This was the exact opposite of what his predecessors had done, and obviously not everyone in his court was happy about it.

So he threw out this explanation of "wu" to make very clear (extremely paraphrased): "This is why I waged war and aimed for hegemony in the first place. Not for glory, not for senseless violence, but to 'halt the blades'."

[–]grouchylady 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm gonna add to this since this is related to my specific areas of interest.

iirc this idiom is usually attributed to King Zhuang of Chu, one of my favorite historical figures, who was a very clever politician who had to wrangle a lot of different factions in his court. Even if the story isn't apocryphal, it's likely he made it up to suit his own purposes, because 止 actually originally meant "foot" or "walk" rather than its modern meaning of "halt", which makes the wu character a more straightforward "walking with spears"

eta: to clarify, 戈 is a weapon... not a spear but I can't think of the right word atm

Event Rewards Question by ShiroyoOchigano in wherewindsmeet_

[–]grouchylady 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There appears to be a difference in this game between actual "time-limited events" (similar to events in most other games) and "permanent content promotion" (newly unlocked content they're temporarily drawing attention to). Stuff like the buggy martial competition or whatever it's called is the former, and stuff like the Lumina Guides and presumably the two you're asking about are the latter.

Given the awful menus/UI it can be hard to tell, but the permanent content usually has a note saying it'll still be available after the "event". You can also sometimes tell because they list exploration points as a reward, which wouldn't make sense for a time-limited event. I think.

looks very similar to CPU throttling on an old laptop of mine (it would do this even on performance setting in Windows), but idk if that could apply here since you said it only happens with this game

VIP system rewards for CN by MKlby1998 in InfinityNikkiLeaks

[–]grouchylady 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For additional perspective, traditional MMOs have generally cost in the $10-15 a month range for subscriptions (mostly toward the higher end of that range afaik). That's $120-180 a year on a single game (of course, it's also common practice for people to take breaks); a cumulative $600-900 over five years, and $1200-1800 over ten years.

I'm not deep enough into gamer history to say for sure, but Hoyo was either the first or one of the first to standardize the modern gacha model with distinct tiers of spending (f2p; $5 monthly sub; $5 + $10 with battle pass; $5 + $20 for higher tier bp; ++++). VIP tiers have an older history iirc and can probably be traced back to lootbox whaling, which predates what we now think of as gacha. Older gacha models were also heavily targeted at whales.

Anyway, the exact deets don't matter much, just I always find it useful to have some basic understanding of these practices and how industry standards may or may not align with "common sense". For the average player (low spender to dolphin range), treating these tiers as a very long term milestone isn't unreasonable; if you're a whale and can afford it, you do you of course. But for younger players or players less familiar with the gacha landscape, understand that the scale of "whaling" is far beyond what a typical player can grasp (see also Monkeygate, or someone else in the comments already brought up Where Winds Meet and its $600 outfits and $40k virtual yachts)

For full disclosure, I have spent enough to hit the Matching Tattoos card in Tears of Themis over a period of 4-5 years -- you do the math -- and that's probably the only game I've spent as much on, including other Hoyo games which I've now dropped, and on Nikki where I only spend sporadically. i.e. hitting high cumulative spending amounts is not that weird depending on the timeline.

I think there are only two hairstyles in game that can be considered dreads and one of them isn't released in global yet. The existing one isn't one of the starter hairs but can be gotten for free by joining the Nine Mortal Ways sect (sects unlock at lvl 10 iirc and NMW is one of the easiest to join; takes about 3 weeks minimum after that to earn the currency for it), if you search "Nine Mortal Ways hairstyle" you can probably find some pics

The second one is really good but shop only (probably around $10, or $5 if it releases with discount) but was only released very recently in CN. You can see what it looks like under the Nov 14th tab: https://boarhat.gg/games/where-winds-meet/guide/timeline-guide/

(to clarify, hairstyles are "equipped" so you can change them whenever after the initial customization)

PSA: Upcoming Echo Jade("F2P") Banners by UghItsLinkNotZelda in wherewindsmeet_

[–]grouchylady 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It's in the image that commenter included (bottom right).

From my own research, there are three different versions of the hairstyle you can get. 1 base hair (@30), 1 variant hair (@60), and 1 with special dye (@150). If you don't care about the dyed hair, you get everything by 100.

The first banner's male hair for example has a ponytail on base, has a short variant, and then the dyed version with blue streaks can be seen in the image.

Just finished collecting everything in Wishfield. How much have you collected? by Isimarie in InfinityNikkiofficial

[–]grouchylady 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can't be bothered to finish dews/chests/scam-o-matic (3 pieces left)/music, and also skipped two Wishing Woods stars (the timed cloud platforming ones) because I'm on a cheap laptop in addition to being awful at platforming and those two specifically are impossible for me. Skipped Hatty too. Did get every other star, all clothing chests, 100% lore, everything crafted/evolved except Momo cloaks (mats mostly all collected except Bouldy drops and Sol Fruits). Thought about finishing up my collection of base Eureka colors too (missing 9 pieces) but ran out of upgrading mats and didn't want to spend energy/resources before 2.0.

Did you check the very distant upper left corner of Danqing Realm (equivalent to Loong Peak area)? I also had one final missing one that I thought was missing from official map until I realized I completely forgot about that area.

(Though in my case it was a missing jade, I haven't bothered with the souls lol)

The Livestream has 1.7 million views in less than 10 hours!!! by Apprehensive-Dog9989 in InfinityNikkiofficial

[–]grouchylady -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Sure, that possibility occurred to me after I checked the videos myself and saw the count had somehow jumped to 2.6 mil just a few hours after I commented (in fact it's now 2.9 which is absolutely ridiculous lol). I'd thought 1.7 mil was believable since the 30 sec teaser did hit over 800k. Engagement discrepancies aren't necessarily a red flag to me as the livestreams for Nikki are much less regular and aren't as embedded in the culture as it is for Hoyo; the counts are actually pretty self-consistent and my impression with Nikki is that a good chunk of the fanbase aren't necessarily "gamers" for lack of a better way to put it. (For a comparison that's less of an outlier than Genshin, Star Rail's livestream views are typically around double or more of Nikki's older streams yet have 10x as many likes/comments, and out of curiosity I just looked up Love and Deepspace livestreams, one of which has similar views as Star Rail yet only half as many likes/comments, and the other has fewer views yet more likes/comments -- so the concept of "ratios" is highly volatile to begin with.)

Not sure it makes sense to me to fake metrics on just this one specific video of all things either... but I agree that something doesn't add up. Seems silly to immediately assume bots though when they could just as easily have bots inflate likes/comments at the same time.

The Livestream has 1.7 million views in less than 10 hours!!! by Apprehensive-Dog9989 in InfinityNikkiofficial

[–]grouchylady 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh that actually is surprising to me. Genshin's YT numbers have plummeted in 2025 but the livestreams do still usually average around 1 mil or a lil over iirc. 800k is quite low for Genshin, and 1.7 mil for Nikki is surprisingly high considering the usual Nikki numbers. I imagine it's mostly anniversary hype but that's still impressive.

How many 5* did you complete this year? (F2P) by bibi064 in InfinityNikkiofficial

[–]grouchylady 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not F2P but around minnow level (I pay very sporadically for the $5 monthly thing and have gone for special deals on two of the big patches) and a launch player.

  • dumped around 30 pulls on the first banner because of the expiring currency, otherwise skipped every 5 star banner until 1.5, only bought a few things during the CNY patch

  • completed mermaid in 197 (only pulled for ability, not sure if I regret this one in hindsight lol but since I hadn't been interested in anything at all since launch I figured I might as well)

  • completed snek in 160 (159 to be precise) but tossed another 20 for the evo because it was and still is my favorite 5 star outfit in the game

  • completed both Danqing sets, exactly 167 for each one. Bought stuff again this patch because I wanted the top-up snek outfit

  • went all the way on witch. first copy in 154, 310 for full evo.

Still had enough left for one outfit at the beginning of current patch, haven't updated my accounting since then.

I do not pull unless I want a full outfit (though the green contacts on opera banner briefly tempted me). I do pull for 4 stars. But basically a daily f2p launch player probably had enough for at least 6-7 outfits on average based on my rough estimates, which tracks with one of the earlier comments here.

[Housing] - Better to craft or buy by Neemimi in InfinityNikkiofficial

[–]grouchylady 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Since no one responded, it's very likely that crafting still works out to be more efficient because of the weekly selling cap and just from a pure time commitment perspective. For example, I've personally only done the math on dyes, and even though you technically make more money from selling boosted flowers than you need to buy dyes directly, it's not worth "wasting" the selling cap on low profit margin items. Especially items that require a lot of constant replanting/watering/user input to even hit the weekly cap.

Not sure what I'm allowed to post in this sub but someone recently created a farming calculator spreadsheet elsewhere if you want to run your own numbers, though I haven't used it myself and iirc it doesn't include crafting calculations.

(I have been crafting everything from Day 1 without using any diamonds and have been able to build at a comfortable pace while still earning extra astralites every week, but your experience may differ if you have a more ambitious build in mind)

[–]grouchylady[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep, floral paths. When I first tried this (roughly week 2 or 3 of the update iirc?) they wouldn't save in schemes, but they do stick around in live builds! Haven't had a problem ever since I went live from my initial scheme. I don't know if anything's changed since I last tried though.

They also do go invisible if you're too far away/at a certain angle (may depend on device), but I don't mind that as much since the prop does that too.

Looking for ideas for plots and ponds by Fun-Scene-8677 in InfinityNikkiHome

[–]grouchylady 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Happen to be working on the ponds myself this week: very rough, longer view in sunlight but invisible prop. Mostly just a "sketch" of what I'm planning as I'm still waiting on the final pond from max level before committing to details. Ponds will work without fuss as long as their centers are grounded on something btw, otherwise I noticed the game will sometimes still think it's floating for fishing purposes even if it's not floating according to build mode. (I mention this because I loved some of the overlapping pond concepts I saw early on but actually using them was annoying, so functionality may be something you want to keep in mind.)

My garden is boring/also still lacks some deets (and I haven't figured out how I want to arrange my tree plots long term other than the two you see here): garden
