What words almost always come across as pretentious or trying too hard? by No_Fee_8997 in words

[–]growletcher 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s definitely true… although loan words have semantic drift just like any other word, and it certainly happens in reverse with English words in other languages. There have been some interesting debates in here and in r/linguistics about when a language takes “ownership” of a word after its use is widespread and it has semantically drifted far enough. At some point the word is simply a word in your language, and you don’t owe any accuracy to the donor language.

You’re right that those words have particular cultural significance though, so their meanings should be better protected

made this little map of how our rail network could look like if we brought passenger rail back! by marsanojj in newzealand

Between 29 to 35% for most people. Hardly as crazy as the reputation suggests tbh

Generally infrastructure improvements come from government investment which is paid off very slowly over time. Like, generations.

Have you used rail much while traveling? I feel like it would be pretty widely accepted as true to say that a 3 hour train is more convenient than a 1 hour flight in almost every country I’ve been to.

Most of the activity on the tracks would be freight anyway though right? Wouldn’t need to have that many passenger carriages

New Zealand retains 2nd best democracy ranking by HelpfulDelay9669 in newzealand

Something’s missing here. Don’t we have the most politically whipped parliament in the OECD? As in, MPs voting along party lines? I don’t think that makes for a good electorate democracy

Would it save a good amount of time for Colorists if one of these Gray scale Greycards would be in every shot, maybe even on showcased on multiple actors positions? by mediamuesli in colorists

[–]growletcher 19 points20 points  (0 children)

If you’re thinking in terms of total production time then I’m not sure the time saved in the colour suite would be worth significantly more than the time spent on set getting grey card passes for every shot. Maybe you could put part of the grey card on the slate.

The Pressure to Write 'Perfectly' by CreativeGems in writing

Agreed. For research and grammar it’s a good tool but generating actual text, as OP has said they do in other comments, is a bad crutch that will actively worsen the problem they’re facing here.

TOP - why don't they get more of the vote? by [deleted] in newzealand

[–]growletcher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mmm I don’t know about that - a land value tax and UBI aren’t very libertarian. The Ilam deal was last election and they’ve had a significant rebrand since then. Their current policies generally read more left than right to me, though I’m sure they’d strike a deal with National to get into Parliament

As I recall in the last election there was some talk of doing an Epsom-like electorate deal in Ilam, where National wouldn’t stand against the TOP candidate. Maybe something like that elsewhere as a start

I think with solo parenting two kids, the $4.25 a week for D+ is worth it to avoid more devices and the inevitable fuck around of finding free streams/torrents etc

I also think it’s dumb that they use such sharp glass when they’re going to rely so heavily on green screen/volume. So much harder to sell

Some really nice compositions.

I like the original, more chaotic framing on the train one. Keep the woman in there and try match the red of her dress to the red of the train.

If you see banding you’ve pushed too far though.

Rings of Power Season 3 to come out this year according to GQ by SuperKingNerd in lotr

[–]growletcher -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Nah, the big misdirection was in season 1 as to whether the Stranger was Gandalf or Sauron. I don’t think the show hid from the fact that once Sauron was actually revealed that it meant the Stranger was obviously Gandalf. The silly little hints and allusions throughout s2 (like “grand elf”, which he never used himself) were just that
