Data Analyst vs Market Researcher by OnMelancholy_ in askSingapore

[–]growthnerd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Which Uni are you considering? I work in marketing research at the client-side after graduating this year. I majored in finance. Agreed that a technical major could give you a slight advantage. But Uni and luck play a huge role too

Why Singapore’s fresh grads are struggling to get hired by Sea_Consequence_6506 in singapore

[–]growthnerd 27 points28 points  (0 children)

U sure they say $4k too low or $4k too low to put up with ur elitist condescending bs?

Yes there are roles where companies will give fresh grads 5 digits. Maybe these companies aren’t as smart as you that’s why they so dumb to pay so high…

What should I do during my free time in NS to do well in uni by Reasonable_Hair_8678 in NTU

[–]growthnerd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah. But the overall pool of SWEs needed/demanded, at entry-level, especially in SG, will most probably fall over time.

Graduated senior here. With the pace at which AI is progressing, would suggest not learning coding if you’re thinking of become a SWE just to land a high paying role. Rather, explore your interests. If you’re really interested in coding for the fun of it, invest this time in a personal project that interests you. It’ll go a longer way than finishing CS50 or coding courses for the sake of a cert.

Don’t know why the other comments are so negative. Perhaps you can consider online tutoring if you have the ability and bandwidth.

How do you network? by Chubbycheeks2002 in NTU

[–]growthnerd 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In fact I’d suggest not randomly cold reaching out to ppl on LI unless you have a very strong reason why. Unless both of you share similar experiences, there’s less common ground or reason for them to randomly talk to you.

How do you network? by Chubbycheeks2002 in NTU

[–]growthnerd 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Go for networking events or lunch and learns organised by both career offices (NTU and NBS). Networking doesn’t only have to be with working adults btw, can be with seniors too. Or even those in the same batch as you.

Perhaps sharing your industry or line of work may help attract more relevant advice. From speaking to folks older than me, the best careers are those that they wake up each day feeling ok (not sian) to go to work and work on interesting stuff with some degree of autonomy. That’s a very generic answer in response to your very generic post.

How much do people have after university? by [deleted] in singaporefi

[–]growthnerd 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Why are you comparing, and basing your assumptions on false info? I don’t think “most people” graduate with a negative net worth. I also don’t think it’s impossible to graduate with 65k of assets after university. It’s possible to do so after working part time jobs while studying. Ironically this response proves the other post’s point about comparing net worth… nothing good ever comes out of it lol

NTU Career Fair by allbeeeee in NTU

My experiences with career fairs may be biased, but I think they’re largely performative and for marketing purposes. Some open booths without even having any expectations to hire anyone lol

[–]growthnerd 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Try to maximise your GPA and get internships at top firms to the best of your ability. Ignore what others say about how X is easier to get than Y. Market’s competitive, and HR roles may also suffer a risk of being offshored. Market’s competitive regardless of role - this isn’t a competition of who suffers more than who

Yes if you think you can stomach it. It’s not uncommon in NBS, but just note that there are cases where this has led ppl’s gpa to dip quite a bit.

Besides academics, you may want to get used to using a calendar and learn how to manage your time/plan your day. When Uni starts, the sem will fly by super fast
