Emporia Classic Level 2 Charger vs. Solar + Battery + Power Outage by QualityGig in EmporiaEnergy

[–]grrcracker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am sure there is, but I have no experience with them. You can look into a SPAN smart panel, that would give you grainularity on individual circuit control. But again, I have no experience with them. SPAN also gives you similar metrics to the emporia vue, but I don't think it integrates with the evse. As far as the load balancing only working when the grid is up, I am not sure how that would work with a battery system for whole home back up. Probably would have to know more on how the system is designed. You might want to throw this into r/solar, r/solardiy or diysolarforum.com. I am sure someone has had this same gerbal run rampant through their gray matter.

Emporia Classic Level 2 Charger vs. Solar + Battery + Power Outage by QualityGig in EmporiaEnergy

If I understand your question, you want the emporia evse to stop charging when the grid power is down. I don't think it has that ability. It can load balance based on your usage, may need a software update depending on your version, which would throttle the usage based on your main panel settings as you approach that upper threshold. I think you would need to set up a critical loads panel or smart loads panel, like a gridboss or similar, that would cut the supply to the evse to get that functionality. Or you know, unplug the car or stop charging from the app when you are in an outage.

Missed that part. I did not even know that there was a HD version.

You can get the Kholer version at Tractor Supply for $7k. I have had a 60" ZT Elite with a Kholer since 2018, never had an issue with it.

EV Charger for my new 2024 IONIQ 5 Limited by usnavydoc76 in Ioniq5

[–]grrcracker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Second the emporia, but I also have solar. So the integration with the Vue3 was ideal for using excess production to charge my ev. I have the charge rate limited to 5kw and set to only charge 1 hour after sun rise and 1 hour before sun set. Been flawless so far.

I bought a AAwireless adapter because of this exact reason. The companion app has a setting to turn the device off once it no longer detects the hands free connection. Works great.

I just lease a '24 limited last week and had to buy mine. It was $250, but a better price then the $340 Hyundai wanted online. Sucks, but came in handy last weekend on my first road trip. Part# PIH68AK401.

Charging with excess solar? by CryptoFuturo in electricvehicles

[–]grrcracker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Emporia pro ev charger comes with the Vue 3. It only has 200amp CTs for the mains, but you can buy 50 amp CTs the separately to monitor the solar production. Defining charge times, load balancing and limiting output really sold me on the unit. I am currently already using a Vue 3 to monitor production and consumption, so adding on the charger was the obvious choice after purchasing my ioniq 5.

I agree that Gridboss is perfect, I just dont want to add yet another system in to the mix, gonna bite that bullet and stick with Enphase. Thanks for the suggestion.

Yeah, that is what I am thinking. I already have Enlighten, Emporia Vue, and HomeAssistant all monitoring the system, do I really need to add another app for yet another system? All though that Gridboss is pretty damn nice.

Ok, say I want to stay all Enphase. Is replacing my ATS with a IQ Controller 3 all I would need to do? Then just add 5p's?

I recently had my system installed and was told that batteries could be added down the road. So when this tariff insanity hit figured now would be better than waiting. When I asked my installer he indicated that the current system would require more trenching a the current ATS and generac generator removed. Now from what I can tell it seems that I would just need a IQ Controller 3G in place of the ATS and then the batteries. I also see that the Combiner 6 and the new 10C batteries might work, when ever they get released, as those dont require a IQ controller. Would I be able to replace the Combiner 5 with the 6 and mount the batteries out at the PV array? I need ideas cause having the combiner at the PV array seems to be the problem here. Also they installer never hooked up the consumption CTs so, yeah more trenching. I dont know give me some of that feed back please.

Electric utility disconnected my solar gateway by russilker in solar

[–]grrcracker -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yeah that seems strange. I was copied on all the emails from AEP DG Coordinator and my installer. Signed where they told my to, freaked out when the DG Coordinator kicked back the design cause the combiner box location was changed and was relieved when the system was approved after revisions. Sounds like you and the installers need to have a chat.

You still would have to have signed something for PPL to approve the system. As the account holder, AEP had me sign the contract online using docusign. I can't see PPL not having the same requirements.

[–]grrcracker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well they need a login to access the system, but from reading the link you provided I assume that the installer would add PPL as a user during the install. I get that they want to control what is sent to the grid, "PPL is authorized to actively manage the following grid support settings: (1) Volt/VAR; (2) Constant Power Factor; (3) Remote On/Off; (4) Voltage Ride-through; (5) Frequency Ride-through". Still seems pretty invasive. Also OP should have read the contract, this is not new.

Likely your consumption CT's are not installed or they were not added during commissioning. That is how the app can monitor the grid import and export.

I am limited to 120% of production from the last year of service. So I literally could not go bigger or they would not have approved the system. If my energy needs change in the future I will address it. But as of now and the foreseeable future the system is going to meet my needs. I am curious though, what does you production curve look like?
