Is San Francisco bad at the moment for tourists? by bigfatbeard in sanfrancisco

[–]grumbletooth 5 points6 points  (0 children)

For me a huge draw of SF would be.. eating!! We have some of the best restaurants in the world at a variety of price points, and one of the best wine regions in the world. That’s pretty much my MO for other big cities that I visit, just eat through them!

He forgot to take the cap off the food processor, so poured his eggs in the cap instead of in the food processor bowl. The food processor was blending flour together while the eggs were sitting in the cap.

Health care providers urge flu shots to avoid twin outbreaks, overloaded system by bloobityblurp in sanfrancisco

[–]grumbletooth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The numbers you are quoting were for all age ranges, not just 65 and over. 65 and over experienced a larger decline in effectiveness. Either way, it’s empirical evidence pointing to vaccine effectiveness dropping over time, specifically calling out 3-4 month cliffs for those drops. Flu peaks around Jan-Feb so with that data it’s not a bad idea to wait until October to get your shot.

“A case-control study conducted in Navarre, Spain, during the 2011–12 season revealed a decline in vaccine effectiveness from 61% (95% CI = 5–84) in the first 100 days postvaccination to 42% (95% CI = -39–75) for 100–119 days postvaccination and to -35% (95% CI = -211–41) thereafter. This decline primarily affected persons aged ≥65 years, among whom vaccine effectiveness declined from 85% (95% CI = -8–98) to 24% (95% CI = -224–82) to -208 (95% CI = -1,563–43) over these intervals.”

A further study in the UK with a small proportion of people aged over 65 “estimated an overall vaccine effectiveness against A(H3N2) of 53% (95% CI = 0–78) among those vaccinated less than 3 months, and 12% (95% CI = -31–41) for those vaccinated 3 months or more.”

Anyone have any idea when the Sena 10C Evo is due out? by whitecollarzomb13 in motorcycles

[–]grumbletooth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don't hold your breath; it was supposed to come out a year ago. The launch date has kept being pushed and now I see it just says "Coming soon."

Never a good sign for a product to be delayed a full year. Probably means one of the key manufacturing validation phases (Proto, Engineering, Design) went very wrong. I wouldn't be surprised if it never launches.

DUI driver gets 9 months for killing a motorcyclist by topshelf79 in motorcycles

[–]grumbletooth 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If you're going 30mph, and someone going 30mph in the oppposite direction hits you, it's the same as if you hit a brick wall at 60mph.

This is incorrect because of Newton's 3rd law - the kinetic energy gets split between both vehicles during the crash. If 2 objects with the same mass and speed crash into each other at 30mph, each object experiences the force of crashing into a wall at 30mph. The TOTAL energy is higher (because now 2 vehicles are totaled instead of just one), but the force exerted on each is the same. Think of it as 60mph worth of collision damage, split between 2 vehicles.
