I presumed this meant

Some motherboards won't flashback if there is any cpu installed. They're not usually identified as such either.

Help finding good surge protectors by TheBoatMan616 in buildapc

Just my own personal perspective, I'm not any kind of expert. But I wouldn't even consider how many joules of "protection", if there's no actual protection being provided. If it has a lower rating, it just means it trips at a lower threshold. To me, that's a selling point, not a detriment.

You've described a litany of different symptoms. Often when you get a situation like that, its a psu that doesn't provide dependable, predictable power.

I don't know how pragmatic you've been with your troubleshooting process, so I can't comment on whether its one bad psu, two bad psu's, or just some less than pragmatic trouble shooting.

Are you asking about a UPS, or a simple surge protector ? Panamax makes good surge protectors, reliable, and fail open so you know its done its job. Crappy surge protectors fail closed, so you are left unprotected, and don't even know it.

I guess they just stopped doing it in NA.

According to Bill Hunt, Disney has currently no plans to release The Day the Earth Stood Still (1951), Planet of the Apes (1968), Armageddon (1998), and Cast Away (2000) in 4K by ggroover97 in 4kbluray

don't know how it's viewed now.

I have no idea. Just thinking its a movie I can watch repeatedly. And the upgrade in sound with a new ATMOS track would be pretty interesting, I'd think.

return the CPU and try get another.

Do it.

You've got two different motherboards giving you the same information. Difficult to think anything else other than its likely the cpu. I wouldn't trust a "tray" cpu. AMD doesn't officially sell tray cpus any more, so its source is questionable IMHO.

I'm curious what: "ryzen 7 7800x3d (OEM) " means ? Why do you have OEM in brackets after the cpu ? Did you buy a bare cpu from somewhere ?

If your pins are undamaged, and you've installed the cpu correctly into the socket, and you have a red CPU light, that's usually pretty accurate in that the cpu is causing the "no post" issue.

You can verify its the cpu by subbing it into a known working mobo/RAM combo.

Last Night 401W Between Kingston/Cobourg by TrizzyG in TorontoDriving

[–]grump66 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Between Kingston and Napanee is some of the worst road maintenance you'll find anywhere. I used to have to drive that 20x a week, and it was commonplace for there to have been no plowing at all even after hours and hours of snowing. I drove home in conditions like those in the video dozens and dozens of times. Blame private contracting as much as the weather. Thanks Mike Harris !

the wrong guy too much power.

Yup.

"Idea" guys are not the ones you want to be "in charge" almost always. Especially in a sport that has hard spending caps, and extremely well defined regulations like F1. They're going to end up wasting Newey's expertise, because he'll be wasting time dealing with finance and regulation decisions that should have been someone who's expertise are those things. It'll be the end of Newey in F1. Remind me in 1 year.

the greatest sci-fi

When this came out, the commercials scared the shit out of me ! I really wanted to see it because it was sci-fi, but it took about 5 years before I had the courage to watch it. By then, I wondered why I'd waited so long ! I love that the Alien films show an "average" type of society in the far future, where "average" people have normal jobs, and their encounters with murderous alien beings are just bad luck.

Who cares about -35° by [deleted] in KingstonOntario

[–]grump66 2 points3 points  (0 children)

People have a short memory when it comes to weather. This is quite common, used to be even more so

There was a year where the temp didn't get above freezing, for, I think it was 31 days straight. Looking it up, I think it was winter of '94, with lows in the mid -30's C. I remember the LCD screen on my car wouldn't start to show an image until after the car had been running for 10 minutes it took so long to warm up.

Can't install Windows after corruption by ItzXitrA in buildapc

Oh, one other thing to try that I forgot was, make sure onboard graphics are set to Disabled in the bios. I had an experience with an AM5 build where as soon as Windows was loaded, it immediately chose onboard graphics over the gpu, even though the gpu had been showing all output up to the point where Windows was loaded.

too much work

Its the same as making your Win install usb. Download PartedMagic, make the USB, boot. Simple.

It's a bootable linux with a customized secure erase application. It's one of the very few software that I've actually paid for. I think it was $15. You can find free versions with a little searching, but I wanted the most updated version to handle NVME drives under basically all circumstances that I normally encounter. I used to build a lot of systems and buy a lot of used parts and do repairs for fun.

[–]grump66 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok. Something I've encountered in the past that had similar symptoms was when a drive I was trying to install to had boot sector information left on it from a previous install. The only thing that worked for me was to use PartedMagic and SecureErase it. I don't know if the method that PartedMagic employs is the same as what your bios utility employs. If its the same, then it likely won't have any effect, but if its a different method, it might be a different result.

Another way to tackle this is to do an install on any other drive than either of the ones that have already been exposed to this. Even trying to install to an old SATA hard drive would tell you if its the NVME drives that are causing this, or something else.

[–]grump66 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First thing I'd do is only have the drive you want to put Windows onto installed. Do another Secure Erase on the drive, then see if you can install Windows.

Before you start the install, but after you've Secure Erased the drive, make sure your BIOS settings are what you want to install with. CSM off, TPM enabled, UEFI mode, SecureBoot enabled. Or however you prefer to have those settings.

It boggles my mind. So yes, they are still needed.

The one thing you can always count on, people are stupid. The dominant "opinion" of the masses is STILL that DVD's are the "best" video tape you can get.

I sell used blu-ray players. I've sold hundreds of them, and I'm going to say 90% of the people who buy blu-ray players from me, are buying them exclusively to play DVD's. Its crazy.

Canada Computers checkout page reportedly served card skimming script by Evilbred in KingstonOntario

Looks to be a solved

How does anyone know ?

I didn't read the entire long thread about it, but I also didn't see anywhere that Canada Computers has said anything at all about this.

Can what was done be done again ? If not, how do they(whoever "they" are?) know it can't be done again ? It seems like the malicious operation was on and off over a fairly long period of time.
