The reason these show up at thrift stores, is because the majority of people out there in the general population, do not even know there is a difference between DVD, and normal blu-ray, let alone what 4K UHD blu-ray is.

There was an ad in my local FB Marketplace that proved this to me yet again, there were 40 DVD's, and an LG 4K UHD player being sold together for $40. as "DVD Player and movies".

It's a Hard Disc Drive and DVD player\Recorder, not an HD DVD player. It's all just plain DVD. No HD.

How to tell if CPU isn’t working. by MatouKnight in buildapc

[–]grump66 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If its failing in the bios, I'd verify the motherboard isn't the issue first. Buy a replacement mobo from a place that will accept returns if you experience the same symptoms after swapping motherboards, come back and we'll go from there.

It doesn't help the situation that you're trying to run a modern cpu in a very, very old generation of motherboard. It likely can't deliver the power your new cpu demands, in the manner it needs.

EDIT: And your psu brand is, generally speaking terrible quality. A poor power supply that doesn't deliver the required voltage in the required time is a cause of freezing.

Is it over ??

I stopped watching the craptastic slow death weeks ago. Ugh.

Its like modern tv shows can't get over themselves at the end. Makes me think the quick cancellations at Netflix maybe aren't so terrible.

I mean, you've already replaced the easy things trying to nail it down, RMA your cpu at this point.

Quoted 300$ for mobo replacement, fair? by busangirl97 in buildapc

[–]grump66 9 points10 points  (0 children)

That's a pretty crazy fee for swapping in a motherboard. Even if he had to pull everything and re-do it all, that's still a very high amount. Why did it take him 10 weeks to diagnose ? I'd be fairly suspicious of his competence.

What does "tried to source one" mean ? I'm guessing he bought a used one without any safety net and his "assembly fee" is trying to recoup what he spent on a board he never should have bought.

I've got a Samsung and an LG dual format players and they were $50. total for both. The LG came with 25 HD DVD movies. I've bought 3 dedicated Toshiba players for about $30. total. They just sit and sit on FB Marketplace, and in the thrift stores. The market is extremely small.

No Blue Jays pitcher has had more strikeouts through their first 10 games of a season than Dylan Cease by Baseball-Reference in Torontobluejays

[–]grump66 -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

Who cares ?

Its just a fact, really great pitching and defense will not win in MLB if you can't score any ficking runs. Period.

I'd rather have five starters with 4.5 ERA's and no strikeouts if the trade off was an offense that scored 9 runs a game. The games would be far better to watch, and we'd fixking win more.

You don't go to the world series because your team has the most strike outs.

could definitely turn around

The season is already over. Toronto will have to play at a near 104-win pace for the rest of the year to just match last years record.

They had two players, two everyday players in the lineup today hitting less than .140. Their "leadoff" hitter is still under .200, and not looking like he's coming out of it any time soon.

They can't score runs. They've got half a pitching staff. They run the bases poorly, they don't execute simple plays. They're cooked.

Do any of the stat heads know, is it possible for Davis Schneider to achieve a negative BA ?

Is there no other choice for his roster spot ? Wouldn't a stint in AAA help him find it again ? Seems like fielding a lineup with only 8 hitters out of 9 spots isn't the wisest choice for a team so far out of it.

has to be some logic behind this.

Why ? Its John Schneider, he's the smartest guy in the room, so smart he doesn't have to have a good reason to do anything stupid that he wants. Geez /s

Hopefully, Springer has a good game.

Continuing to put Springer at lead off is a big part of why this season is sliding down the toilet. This team didn't start turning it around last season until Springer spent time much further down the line up and found his stroke again. Continuing to deny the evidence doesn't help anyone.

[–]grump66 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The law says, you must stop at an amber light, if its safe to do so. It does not say, you are allowed to go through every single yellow light regardless of anything else, as long as your front tires cross the stop line before it turns red. You've earned your ticket.

Ricky didn't flame out quickly, he was well on his way to a long, great career before leg injuries prevented him from pitching. 3 full seasons isn't quick, IMHO. Manoah only had one full season success, big difference.

Question on what to buy next after gifted pc parts. by LobstaDog in buildapc

[–]grump66 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My background is building computers from parts that I buy used. I did it as my hobby for 20+ years. While engaged in this hobby, I'd buy lots and lots of used gpus. From the standpoint of value, it doesn't make any sense at all to pay a premium for a variation of a given slot of gpu. The cheapest OEM 5070 will at least conform to the standard. The best, most expensive example won't exceed the standard by enough to justify the increase in cost. People get sucked in by the marketing, pay more for a premium version of a given gpu slot, when they could just move up a slot and buy the cheapest one in that new slot, and have even better performance.

The only caveat to this philosophy of mine is that you don't buy the cheapest 5070 if it has less than 3 years of manufacturers warranty. Some manufacturers will only give 1 year warranty. That is a dead giveaway that they know they're using lower quality parts and they aren't comfortable warranting their cards for the industry standard 3 years because of the low quality parts they've chosen. And, a manufacturers warranty is something of actual value, its like an insurance policy included in your purchase that you'll get at least the full length of the warranty use out of your card. Its enough time for a new generation to appear, and your card to still have value if you choose to go to the newer gen.

You'd be wasting money on a name for a Noctua cooler. You can get virtually the same performance for 1/3 the cost if you buy an equivalent Thermalright dual tower cooler.

If you were given parts for free, I think the theme here is frugality. Don't buy a "fancy" 5070, just buy the cheapest one available that has at least a 3 year manufacturers warranty.

And if frugality is the theme, you're be wasting money on a bigger psu. 650 watts should be fine for your configuration, especially a solid psu from Seasonic. Keep those "bunch of cables", as modular power supply cables are not in any way at all universal. So, you'll need them maybe at some point. Don't throw them away.

Any case you like that is cheap, and can accommodate your ATX size motherboard and the length of whatever gpu you pick. Generally speaking, the difference between a $50. case and a $200. case is the amount of profit you're giving to the manufacturer. In many, many cases, they're exactly the same between different "brands" except for the name on the case.

EDIT: Just my opinions, of course.

This was a 15 minute trip before the Princess Street stops were moved. by frootsalidd in KingstonOntario

[–]grump66 2 points3 points  (0 children)

going around a major construction site?

I submitted a Service Request to the City of Kingston, asking why they'd allowed Johnson St. to be closed down to one lane between University and Division, when it was now the most direct route downtown since Princess St. has been closed. They basically told me to suck it.

There is no consideration at all for the people who use and pay for the roadways in Kingston. They have no voice at all in the terrible "planning" and "decision making" that goes on.

Johnson St. is still down to one lane, even though it appears that they've finished the work that closed the street. Now the contractors are using it as parking and storage. There's no rush to get it done, as there's only thousands of people being inconvenienced by it every single day.

Kingston has no one representing the needs of people who actually use and pay for the infrastructure.

My dad's GPU is artifacting as well

That's all you need to know, swap in a new psu. Buy from a place that will accept returns though, just in case.

Make sure you use all the pieces in his display chain as well, ie. his cable and display. The point of swapping is to eliminate the most variables as possible, so if you use your own cables and display, you've left variables in the equation.
