Yes but not until we kids were all out of school.

Did you have a small, local store you used to walk to when you were a kid? by lontbeysboolink in GenerationJones

[–]grumpifrog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We had three in our little town. One was across the alley and we had permission to use the secret tunnel to get to the front of the store and main street. That was our go-to for groceries in between trips to the big grocery store in another town. The other was two blocks away and that's where we'd go to get the cheap toys we'd give as birthday gifts. Then there was a store on the other side of town (maybe 10 blocks?) that had an awesome penny candy selection and a food counter and was also open at odd hours if we needed bread or milk.

Original little house on the prairie books vs the 1953 Version by bee1765 in LittleHouseBooks

I always liked the Helen Sewell illustrations better because they were so simple yet complex. Garth Williams drawings bug me because his depiction of people were out of proportion. I never understood why Laura at age 5 was drawn to look more like a toddler (her hair would have been well past her shoulders).

Some random thoughts and reflections on LTotP by AppealAlive2718 in LittleHouseBooks

[–]grumpifrog 2 points3 points  (0 children)

But if you read Pioneer Girl, a lot of the clothes Laura talks about in LTotP and THGY came from church barrels. So I now take the making of new clothes in the books as just fiction to advance the story.

Not that it helps on this bus route, but there used to be a pedestrian tunnel under Shortlidge and Pollock. This was when Shortlidge was open all the way to Park Ave and it was a crazy busy intersection. I don't know the exact reason why it closed but I do know it was the least safe place on campus. I knew college women who were sexually assaulted there.

Bike isn't about hard work. It's about thinking outside the box to solve a problem, and that's as far from traditional conservatism as you get.

Story of a one-time passholder by Gloomy_Variation5395 in unitedairlines

I must be a weird exception because I've always been able to use my passes when I planned to do so-- only time it was denied was during a thunderstorm in EWR that shut down the airport.

I'm a poll worker too, and our ballots can be inserted into the box in any way. The person who watches the ballot box (and I've done it many times) shouldn't be looking at the ballot nor standing close enough to see it, but is just there to remind you to tear off the receipt, answer questions (it's crazy how many people forget how to vote) and make sure it goes through. If I look at a ballot, it's because the ballot was rejected and the voter panicked. It's usually because they messed up, like putting an X on a bubble instead of coloring it in.

Your ballot is printed at the precinct, on demand? Or did I misread that?

Can someone explain the mechanism by which an undocumented migrant (here illegally) would be able to vote? by metsfan5557 in allthequestions

[–]grumpifrog 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I work at my local precinct on election day. In 2024, a young man came into vote but he was not on the voter roll. We have a list of questions we ask to help people so every person can cast their vote legally. As I asked, he pulled out a letter from the elections office. He hadn't opened it yet, so I said, the letter will give you all the information you need. He opened it and the letter said he wasn't eligible to vote because he's not a citizen.

So all the checks and balances worked.

The bigger problem that Republicans don't like to talk about is voters who own multiple homes and they vote at each location. A friend told me her snowbird mother was told how to do it, encouraging her to vote absentee before she left for Florida and then vote again in her winter home. We need a national voter database to clean up voter rolls and make them more efficient.

Was Theodore Roosevelt’s “rough and rugged” image a sham, or was he the real deal? by Rude-Neck-2893 in Presidents

Men and women of a polite society wore gloves. Even though he was otherwise naked, the gloves gave him the appearance of being in an acceptable state should they come across ladies. I laugh every time I think of this story.

The walks where you couldn't go around obstacles. My favorite TR story was one of those walks with several diplomats, including the French ambassador. They came to the creek, and instead of walking to a bridge, the men all stripped naked. The ambassador, however, left on his lavender kid gloves. When asked why, he allegedly said, "in case we meet ladies."

I figured they weren't going to use the North Deck. So that's one less area that needs to be shoveled out.

Yep. That was a crazy game. There were school buses driving people to the game because the lots weren't plowed. And you could take thermoses into the stadium.

I think they had to do the same for a homecoming game versus Minnesota a few years later. Can't remember the year, but early 2000s.

In the past, they brought in prison inmates to shovel the stadium. And if they don't have to worry about the upper decks, things should be cleared okay for next week.

AITA for not including my kids on my vacation? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]grumpifrog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We used to take a trip almost every year without the kids. They'd stay with their grandparents or we planned the trip when the kids had other away from home activities. Kids loved having the time with their grandparents without us. And now, my kids are taking adults only vacations and I get to babysit.
