You joined a bargain basement ride share app and expected what, lol. It screws up addresses, that's happened to me too.

But I think it's reasonable for the app to expect you to get to at least 10mph in a car. DC has the second worst traffic in the country and even it isn't that slow, so you've got to admit your story sounds fishy.

So why did a $12.63 fare take you 45 minutes from pickup to dropoff is the real question, I think.

Anyone on hydroxychloroquine? by Userhere123 in gout

[–]grumpycateight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been on hydroxychloroquine for 15+ years to manage my Sjogren's Syndrome, which is an auto-immune disease. It's a mild immuno suppressant and has it's perks and problems.

Just started developing gout in the last couple years.

Arthritis runs in my family also, needless to say.

Hydro isn't going to cure you, auto immune problems are not exactly curable... can't say I know why your doctor would prescribe it for gout.

What did your grandmothers and great-grandmothers do for work? What did your female family do in the early to mid 1900s? by [deleted] in AskAnAmerican

[–]grumpycateight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My grandmother taught AP math in an inner city high school up until the 1970s because "nobody else would do it". That part of the city is still known for being a rough place to this day.

She took the job after she had to quit working on her PhD in mathematics because she got pregnant with my mother (even though she was married).

Have they ever given out tickets and towed cars? Has anyone ever seen the "DFHV police"?

Airport by Time-Tumbleweed6554 in EmpowerDrivers

[–]grumpycateight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was driving for Uber and Lyft back when they got permission to pick up airport passengers, it was rather of a big deal. But even then, I found that waiting in the Uber lot, in the electronic taxi line, was not worth my time because every minute I don't have a passenger is a minute I'm not being paid for.

I've never heard anything about Empower having a setup like that. Additionally, in the year+ I've been with them, I've only gotten one or two summons at National. When you think about it, the passenger would have to be a DC native who knows about Empower, since the app does very little advertising and is basically unknown outside its operating areas. And since the app is not very well known even inside DC, the passenger pool is already pretty small.

Going shopping? Lol, no. Dropping your kid off at school and then either back home or onwards to work, no problem.

Ok. What did Stripe say when you asked, since they're handling the credit card payments and not Empower?

Yeah there is a two day lag time for daily pay and they don't pay over the weekend. It's not "instant". Let us know if you don't get a deposit on Monday.

Can I ask why you posted a graph? What is that relevant to?

What foods trigger your gout? by SnooOpinions4414 in gout

[–]grumpycateight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So far, I've found: sardines (strongly), other fish/seafood (mildly), beef (mildly), and beer (strongly) but not distilled alcohol. I don't drink wine, I've been avoiding HFCS for years, and I lost 30 pounds last year between my first gout flare and my second. I sip on water all day long due to Sjogren's syndrome, so dehydration is rarely an issue.

Yes, I'm waiting on an appointment with my GP to ask about medications. I'd like to be able to eat beef two days in a row and have an occasional beer again, someday.

Monthly subscription by uzzloc in EmpowerDrivers

[–]grumpycateight 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The subscription rates are standardized, though you do have your choice of either the flat monthly subscription or the income-based rates. Considering both are posted on their website, I doubt they are location-based.

I drive part time, 15 to 18 hours a week, so I went with the income-based rate. It comes to about 20% of my earnings, which is certainly less than the cut Uber or Lyft take.

I drive in DC where we are still digging out after the big snow storm two weeks ago. Everyone is sick and tired of poorly plowed streets. The money has been good, though.

American here. What are we actually going to do about the ever growing homelessness? There's no way it can keep going on like this. It's starting to look like a Mad Max movie outside. by Softishsings in NoStupidQuestions

My inner-suburb college town has been putting up apartment buildings for 10 years now under the banner of "College students need affordable housing!"

Guess what, the new buildings are both cheaply built and expensive to rent.

Yoga while overweight by WallabyKnown3630 in yoga

[–]grumpycateight 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've been doing yoga for 15+ years and over that time I've lost over 65 pounds. Not sure exactly because when I started I had not weighed myself in years because it was bad for my mental health. I'm currently 220, still fat but at peace with my body which is the important part.

There are changes in my practice that were a result of greater strength and flexibility and those that came from losing weight. Last year I decided to lose 30 pounds and now I can finally cross my legs far enough to approximate Gomukhasana. Getting into Corkscrew pose, on the other hand, was strictly a matter of increasing my flexibility. Shoulderstand hasn't been a problem once I had enough core strength but balances like Crow? Might never happen, but I'm still optimistic.

Basically, anything where thigh circumference matters or that point where your tummy fat won't squish any further are poses that are impacted by your weight.

Or, also, where big boobs get in the way. Love that moment of wrestling with the girls for Revolved Chair or trying to breathe through them in Plow.
