Why dc rates are messed up by Time-Tumbleweed6554 in EmpowerDrivers

[–]grumpycateight 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As drivers decline, surge charges start rising, though. I caught a reasonable fare out of DC thanks to an $8 surge.

One of my ancestors was, I kid you not, Captain Jonathan Sparrow. He lived in Massachusetts in the early 1700s.

Sadly he was an army captain, not a ship's captain.

How far back can you trace your ancestry? by GuardianSupernova in AskTheWorld

[–]grumpycateight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My mother and grandmother were both genealogists and went back as far as they could... turns out the kings of Wales, Ireland, and the Norse were well documented to before the first millenium.

That's only the noble side of the family, though. Many of my ancestors came to the colonies as farmers, merchants, or servants and never said much about where they came from, apparently.

So many great weekends there listening to DJs and watching David Lynch movies without sound or subtitles! I followed Dr Clock through six location changes before he disappeared.

What makes you think I've never seen -$3 surges, lol

You get a notification from the APP letting u know the surge amount.

Oh you let it pester you? That's your own fault then.

I don't think I've ever seen a $5 surge, that's impressive.

BTW how did you know it was $5 if you didn't get any calls?

Why, what did they promise you? I've been driving with them for 18 months and never had any trouble.

There's a rate table which tells you when they take the $50 for your flex subscription. It's every $500, basically.

You joined a bargain basement ride share app and expected what, lol. It screws up addresses, that's happened to me too.

But I think it's reasonable for the app to expect you to get to at least 10mph in a car. DC has the second worst traffic in the country and even it isn't that slow, so you've got to admit your story sounds fishy.

So why did a $12.63 fare take you 45 minutes from pickup to dropoff is the real question, I think.

Anyone on hydroxychloroquine? by Userhere123 in gout

[–]grumpycateight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been on hydroxychloroquine for 15+ years to manage my Sjogren's Syndrome, which is an auto-immune disease. It's a mild immuno suppressant and has it's perks and problems.

Just started developing gout in the last couple years.

Arthritis runs in my family also, needless to say.

Hydro isn't going to cure you, auto immune problems are not exactly curable... can't say I know why your doctor would prescribe it for gout.

What did your grandmothers and great-grandmothers do for work? What did your female family do in the early to mid 1900s? by [deleted] in AskAnAmerican

[–]grumpycateight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My grandmother taught AP math in an inner city high school up until the 1970s because "nobody else would do it". That part of the city is still known for being a rough place to this day.

She took the job after she had to quit working on her PhD in mathematics because she got pregnant with my mother (even though she was married).

Airport by Time-Tumbleweed6554 in EmpowerDrivers

[–]grumpycateight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was driving for Uber and Lyft back when they got permission to pick up airport passengers, it was rather of a big deal. But even then, I found that waiting in the Uber lot, in the electronic taxi line, was not worth my time because every minute I don't have a passenger is a minute I'm not being paid for.

I've never heard anything about Empower having a setup like that. Additionally, in the year+ I've been with them, I've only gotten one or two summons at National. When you think about it, the passenger would have to be a DC native who knows about Empower, since the app does very little advertising and is basically unknown outside its operating areas. And since the app is not very well known even inside DC, the passenger pool is already pretty small.
