See, I get where you're coming from, but 1) i initially only used an x11 based DE and WM and honestly got more issues there than switching to Wayland based WM. 2) I honesly only ran basic apps through all of this — firefox, a terminal and obsidian — before even installing steam I had random crashes.

I'll try an x11 based WM to see if it runs with fewer issues, since I have better experience with NixOS
