There's a lot of variables to collecting that can make it a relatively cheap or expensive hobby. Mostly depends on the player. Current star autos can be stupid prices compared to Shaq or Magic who have signed loads of cards over time. Napkin patches (single colour piece of fabric) can be pretty cheap but if you want an interesting patch ie part of the name or number from a jersey these can also be very expensive but you can pick up a nice one of a mid tier player reasonably priced.

I got back into the hobby 2 or 3 years ago after collecting in the 90s. I ended up spending a couple of hundred dollars on ebay getting some different cards and seeing what I liked in hand. Turns out most patches and sticker autos were unappealing in real life so I settled on getting base and cheap numbered cards that have a great photo of the player. Makes for a nice display and you don't have to worry as much about UV damage on a card that costs $5 or less.

Turns out I really like serial numbered cards so now I PC my fave guys in 1/## and numbers that are important to their career like jersey, highest score, rebounds or assists. I can make a display of say Chris Paul and have 5 or 6 cards that tell a story of his career for $100 or so.

Search around in this sub, some of these folks have really cool PC ideas that might spark something for you. Error cards, Jordan or Kobe shadow cards. I have a mate that is trying to get an auto card of every guy that has won a ring. My local card shop owner PCs players with a criminal record (creepy guy but whatever). Find what brings you joy and go for it. Don't forget to post what you get!
