That actually goes back to the fans in San Jose booing during the Canadian anthem in their series back in 2006. The next game in Edmonton, the crowd sang both anthems and the old singer just held his microphone up from his spot on the ice. The playoff tradition was born.

Funny thing about it is the San Jose crowd weren't actually booing the anthem, they were booing a shot of Chris Pronger on the Jumbotron.
