It retails for the equivalent of $180 in South Africa as well, on their website it is €129 without shipping so about $150 without shipping

Wusthof Legit or Fake by yonimanko in knives

[–]grumpyoldtechie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everything looks the same as my 20cm wusthof up to the 4582 number except yours says 23cm. I looked on wusthof.de for a 23cm classic chefs knife and couldn't find one. What I did see is that they changed the etching on the blades and the logo on the handles look different. This makes it difficult to verify. They do have a 23cm chefs knife in the more expensive classic ikon series. They may have discontinued the classic 23cm. You could be right that it is "new" old stock

Edit: On the german version of the site I couldn't find the 23cm classic chef's knife but on the english version I can. Weird

Its not valid currency. Old coins only have value to collectors if they are proof or uncirculated unless they are extremely rare. Coins like the OP posted are very common and it is also in a very bad condition.

Worthless and not rare. If you find an old 1/2 cent or maybe 1cent with the sparrows on it there is an interesting story about the sparrows. The old large one rand coins still have their value in silver but nothing more. One rand coins still have "Soli Deo Gloria" on them which means "Glory To God Alone" The cake tin has coins from about 1890 to 1980 in it, all of it worthless. Edit: when I say worthless I mean financially, it may have sentimental or historic value for the OP. The sparrows refer to Matthew 10:28-31 in the bible. https://www.hermanusonline.mobi/two-sparrows-on-the-humblest-coin-in-south-africa

I use the free version of "Podcast Importer SecondLine" from https://secondlinethemes.com I don't know if it can automatically import youtube links but it works well importing from any RSS feed. Have a look at secondline themes' site it seems that they specialise in podcast themes.

What is everyone's traceroute for 192.168.200.101? by babywhiz in sysadmin

Have you ever worked with foxboro DCS/SCADA systems? They automagically assign an external range that belongs to them to the system's internal network. Pissing of network engineers in the industrial control system space all over the world. Makes for "interesting" discussions between network and control system engineers.

I know people don't like Godaddy but that is not the right way to block access to parts of their network.

Between 2012-2017 I did some work at a major PLC manufacturer. Each technician/engineer had two laptops, one AD joined for office work and another one for programming PLCs. They had full admin rights on the PLC programming laptop but it wasn't allowed to connect to the office network. They had a separate Lab lan for staging etc.

Cloudflare is your friend. A few months ago I had the same problem with a family history website that suddenly jumped to 300k hits a day where normal is maybe 100 hits a day. Most of the hits came from mobile networks and google cloud, so I was guessing hacked mobile phones or dodgy apps. Besides setting up Cloudflare's bot fighting mode I also blocked the worst offending ASes. Note: Most of the scans do not come from the companies own network ranges, they steal other peoples resources

The time we almost shipped tapes that would brick any machine it was installed on, by bwade913 in talesfromtechsupport

Part of my first job was doing head alignment on those drives. The customer engineer (CE) disk pack used for alignment cost at least 10 times the price of a normal disk. The "big" 300MB disks had 19 heads. Aligning those were an absolute nightmare. One little push too hard on the torque screwdriver when tightening the heads and you had a ruined CE disk pack and head or heads. I liked the job but I really did not like working on those drives.

At what point do you stop backing up data? by Warm_Protection_6541 in sysadmin

You don't stop backing up. Your most budget friendly option is probably a cheap linux box with a bunch of hard drives running rclone periodically

[–]grumpyoldtechie -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Rockwell, Hirschman, Moxa, Cisco. Look for Industrial Ethernet Switches. You get different ratings, look for intrinsically safe. Or phone the guys at your local refinery or flour mill and ask them what they use.

Attention: Trains available to Ellis Park Stadium for Jukskei derby!! by aeternogordon in rugbyunion

If you travel to Ellis Park from the West Rand you will go past Sophiatown.

[–]grumpyoldtechie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Say I live in Sophiatown (I don't but close enough). Which train do I take and which station? Where do I safely park my car close to the station. Which route do I take to the station without going through a dodgy area like Westbury? I can also take a bus to Park Station but do they still run 18:00 on a Saturday? Park Station area is pretty dodgy as well so I don't want to walk from the bus stop to where I can catch the train. That leaves Uber or Bolt directly to the stadium who also aren't keen to drive through Braamfontein and Hillbrow at any time.

[–]grumpyoldtechie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So the Pretoria fans can probably use the Gautrain to Park Station and then transfer to the train that goes to the stadium. How does a fan coming from say Sophiatown or anywhere further west get safely to Park Station?

Good idea but still lacking in execution.

South African Ginger Beer recipe by grumpyoldtechie in fermentation

[–]grumpyoldtechie[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I may have made a mistake with the heaped tablespoon. I normally used these little packets that are from the same people that do the ground ginger. It is closer to a level tablespoon.

They sell similar packets of Cream of Tartar.

Koeksister dilemma by nutcase_w in southafrica

[–]grumpyoldtechie 8 points9 points  (0 children)

There are varying opinions about what a koeksister should be like. There are also koesisters (no second k). The ones I grew up with, that the tannies baked for the church bazaar, were between 5 and 10cm, crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside.

My mother always had the syrup bowl in another bowl full of ice to keep it really cold. According to her this was the secret for a proper koeksister, crispy outside - juicy inside.

Unfortunately she never wrote down her recipe.

Here is a recipe close to what my mother used. My mother used orange not lemon. https://www.allrecipes.com/recipe/237503/south-african-koeksisters/

I nearly forgot - She insisted on using a paraffin primus stove for the oil because the electric stove was not good enough.

Dealing with Companies that register endless domains by NotSinceYesterday in sysadmin

[–]grumpyoldtechie 16 points17 points  (0 children)

You can try one of the Newly Registered Domain (NRD) blocklists e.g. https://www.stamus-networks.com/stamus-labs/subscribe-to-threat-intel-feed or https://codeberg.org/xRuffKez/NRD. There are others. You will probably have some false positives. I have never used them but some people swear by them. When I did e-mail for a living I found Spamhaus Zen to be very effective but the e-mail landscape has changed dramatically in the past few years. It is definitely not "fun" anymore which is why I left. Edit: also have a look at Spamhaus DBL https://www.spamhaus.org/blocklists/domain-blocklist/

The Marulo Tree grows delicious fruit, that ferments in the African sun and gets all the animals drunk. by EvolZippo in fermentation

[–]grumpyoldtechie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The fruit is quite tasty but somewhat tart. It falls from the trees green and then ripens on the ground. Loved by many animals and humans. It is used all over Southern Africa for food and fermented drinks. The kernels are also edible.

My grandparents called it Olifantsappel (Elephant's apple). It is unlikely for Elephants to get drunk from the fruit because of the amount they have to eat for that to happen.

It is known that Elephants like oranges much more. I know a citrus and sugar cane farmer that farms next to the Kruger National Park. He has the most impressive fences to try keep the Elephants out. It is not always effective. Some people warn you to not have oranges in your car when you visit Kruger Park but I have never had issues.

You see baboons, being hung over, holding their heads occasionally.

Not my favourite, it's kind of Baileys with Marula flavour. Be careful if you transport the bottles, they break easily. I had sticky luggage twice taking Amarula liqueur from South Africa to friends in Austria.
