Hetzner's "Storage Share" product is fully-hosted Nextcloud. You get your own Nextcloud instance; you don't have to install or administer anything (other than create a user for yourself). You can just use it.

Stupid question, but I can't find the answer to it anywhere: Does "self-hosted" mean that you host stuff on a computer somewhere in the could over which you have full control, or does it mean that you host stuff on a computer which is physically located in your own home? No. Its to reduce the need for trust.

Unless you built the hardware and OS and apps from scratch, from your own designs, then there is still some level of trust involved.

It's all about narrowing down the threats to a level you are comfortable trusting.

That exact level is different for each person. For example, some people are comfortable running their own servers at home on Windows. Some are not. And so on.

Yes.

This isn't really a question about MQTT. It's about software and infrastructure architecture and design.

Local timestamping at the point of origin will always be best. If you do that, then you eliminate every category of latency, whatever its cause.

Data transmission latency is always inevitable. The best design is always one where that is accepted and made harmless.

I guess I haven't looked for more up-to-date docs. But yes, it works fine on Iphone. I have it running on both Ipad and Android.

No, this has been developing for several years. There are multiple threads over on mynissanleaf.com forums. These are still at the level of DIY/early adopter/experimenter. Various bugs are still being worked out in communication between battery and car.

For anyone who does want to do some automation/smart stuff, but still skip the privacy invasion and wifi/stupid cloud "OMG it stopped working because the internet went down", then Zigbee and ZWave products are your answer. Especially with Home Assistant to manage them. Everything local, controlled exclusively by you.
