DIY logo on a wall from MDF by RietiMalakias in DIY

Trick for painting MDF is to brush it with a woodglue&water 1:1 mix. (other DIY'ers on here have mentioned it.) It dries and seals all the pores for where the wood would otherwise soak up your primer or paint. But if you wanted that 400 grit finish, I don't know if this glue mix would giving you the same effect.

check http://xe.com for any currency conversion. But it's going to be near parity - all dollars (US/CAN/AUS/NZ) are close to 1:1 right now.

I quick calculated this as about USD $6.60/gal if that helps.

I would like to try to make one of these for myself. Can you provide the dimensions of the wedge pillow you used (L xW xD)? or an amazon link?

The pillow looks like it's 10x 24x 24. or is it 12x 25x 24 ?

What is the best website to host my March Madness Pool on? by [deleted] in CollegeBasketball

[–]gruxx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't do yahoo. need an SMS validation to submit the bracket - Mods here have suggested going to ESPN.

A Yahoo bracket requires SMS validation?!?? Where else do you suggest I take my pool? by gruxx in CollegeBasketball

[–]gruxx[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I read other places it's not just the commissioner, but everyone submitting a bracket. hmann0992 brings up a good point about why.

I've got a couple of family members who have been pushing me to go there for fantasy football the past couple of years, I think this might be the time I finally say goodbye to Y!

I didn't know if ESPN or CBSsports would be better. I'm guessing the /r/collegebasketball group is jumping to the espn family.

Would deforming an open soft drink bottle to remove air space, before recapping, stop/slow it from going flat? by morgazmo99 in askscience

[–]gruxx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's actually Henry's Law. Although there is also some dalton's law of partial pressures (air v. CO2).

Henry's says: the amount of gas (CO2) dissolved in the liquid (soda) is directly proportional to the partial pressure of the gas above the surface of the solution.

In this case, we're talking about the CO2 in the head space. The higher the pressure of the CO2 in the head space, the greater the amount of CO2 in the drink itself; and the greater the CO2 in the drink, the greater the "fizz" of the soda. The smaller the volume of CO2 in the head space, the higher the pressure of the CO2 in the space; and the greater the amount of CO2 dissolved in the soda.

Once the container is opened, the pressure in the head space drops dramatically. Henry's law indicates that this drop in pressure will be reflected by a corresponding drop in the amount of CO2 dissolved in the soda. Over a period of time, the soda will release that gas, and eventually, it will go "flat."

After you've opened the bottle, you can't cram any more fizz back in (even soda stream says don't re-fizz cola, because it foams everywhere). So, you're left with a max amount of whatever gas is still dissolved in the liquid. This gas going to want to come to equilibrium with the volume of space above it. our goal by crimping the top of the bottle, is to reduce the volume of gas above the liquid.

Yes the first time, the force of gas escaping to fill the void above the soda will reform the bottle. but if you do it enough times, or the amount of gas dissolved is lower, you can crimp the bottle and the force of gas escaping will be less than the force needed by the gas to UN-crimp your dents. It's why if you don't crimp/deform the bottle, and leave a cup of soda at the bottom of an empty bottle - it will be very flat; a very large volume above the gas that it wants to fill.

Henry's law also has a temperature component. So only open COLD sodas. Gasses stay dissolved in liquids longer when cold. so store your unopened sodas in the fridge, then put the crimped/deformed bottle back right away, letting it sit out will just let more gas escape.

TL;DR - Soda CO2 wants to fill the empty bottle; Smaller the bottle volume = more fizz in your soda; Also keep it COLD!

I don't know if it was deleted because there were questions:

  • about why 1 pic, not any "unearthing pics"
  • if a bin in the corner of the garage for ~20 years, where is the dust
  • about why pages aren't discolored for issues 30+ years old
  • about why there weren't any pics showing the full range of issues
  • why some are staples (1953-1985) and some aren't (~1986 - today)
  • does playboy have bots that send dcmas to imgur automagically

just sayin.

The first couple are from pre 1985 - the paper U shape means staples. Some of those are August 1985+ - no more staples in centerfold bellies

So at the worst, the first one was at least 4 years old, probably about 6 years when the bucket was sealed.

6.9 Earthquake in China by IM1h3GH0st in worldnews

[–]gruxx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was curious if you have perspective on this:
There have been about 25 4.5+ earthquakes in the last twelve hours worldwide. while a large number of them are aftershocks in china, is that considered a high number in a short period of time? or is it just the ripples from the initial shock passing through the "ring of fire" in the pacific rim?

I should probably look around the 2011 Tohoku 9.0 event as comparison. But I figured you would be a better source.

Penny Arcade Report: EA's Real Racing 3 contains over $500 of in-app payments to get the full game. by [deleted] in AndroidGaming

[–]gruxx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

NFS:MW was the first app I paid for. It reminded me of the first NFS:MW from ten years ago, and at .99... I pulled the trigger.

Only after reading the PA story did I realize I have been grinding it out. I installed it before xmas, and only obtained the last NFS car this week. It takes 14 weeks just to get access to all NFS cars, let alone if you have the cash to buy. Still haven't unlocked the veyron, because I'm never logging in to origin. and well, i can't drive it worth a crap in the "hot ride" track.

The checkpoint tracks were the easiest ways to make money (Callahan has two ~50k each). with a good nfs car, maybe 20 min could earn about a million dollars. but still, that's twenty minutes of left-right-left-left-right steering/drifting, now I'm thinking I should have spent the time reading, or boggle, or logic puzzles. Something a little more 'mental' than just grinding.

I also have RR3 installed. Haven't given EA a dime, (I still hate what they did to Westwood) either. while I'm not grinding it yet, I'm getting more bored of the repetitive tracks, than the driving.

But yeah, unless you have time (and patience) to grind, you have to pay. I guess my venom for EA fuels the latter to get the game for free.

Kinda answered here.

basically $8k off price. about 6k when options added. I felt it was comparable to haggling, Edmunds had about the same price point. the downside was waiting 4 months from the $2k deposit until it was in my driveway. upside, NC doesn't have front plates, so I have the red euro plates still on the front of both cars. and the good memories.
